Description

Arguably the most controversial of Bangle and van Hooydonk's work was the E65 7 Series, a sharp contrast to the preceding E38 generation which was conservatively styled.
In fact, van Hooydonk's original 1998 sketch for the E65 was a much more radical sleek fastback, but the final design was toned down considerably to resemble a more conventional three-box sedan.
Time magazine named the E65 as one of the 50 Worst Cars of All Time for its rear end styling and iDrive functionality, while there were several online petitions pressing BMW to sack Bangle. While the sales for the 2002 and 2003 models years were off 60% from the 2001, the E65 7 series became the best-selling 7 Series of all time.

The E65 was the first BMW vehicle to include the iDrive infotainment system, and the exterior styling (overseen by Chris Bangle) marked a significant departure from traditional BMW styling.
Under the direction of Chris Bangle, BMW's Design Chief at the time, the BMW E65 7 Series saw a departure from traditional BMW exterior styling.
The controversial "flame surfacing" design greatly contrasted the conservative lines of its E38 predecessor. The rear end styling was nicknamed "Bangle ****" by critics, due to the elongated rear bootlid.
However, many believe that the controversial styling helped the 7 series look modern even after many years.
This 2002 BMW 745i has 85,425 miles and runs on a 4.4-liter V8 engine with automatic transmission. The Titanium Gray exterior matches the gray leather interior perfectly.
