NOS Clardy A/C System for 1974-1976 02 Series, Never Installed
Description
Here's an unusual and timely set of parts---an NOS Clardy A/C kit for sale. I bought it years ago from a retired physician, who bought it new with the idea of installing it in an earlier model 2002. Once he'd received the kit and thoroughly read the instructions and took measurements against his early ’02, he lost interest. Please note that this A/C kit is made for a 1974-1976 "Squaretail" ’02, and will likely not fit other models correctly. The late-model "squaretail" cars had a deeper dashboard lip and a different transmission tunnel shape--and that's what this Clardy kit is made for (1974-1976). I got the NOS Personal Mahogany steering wheel (with BMW hub adapter and horn button) from the same person, as well as the matching shift knob. These items come with the deal if you want them. The shift knob does need some restoration, and I think it came standard with a 1967 2000CS.
The kit comes with eight pages of original Clardy Evaporator Case Installation instructions, and all the unopened packets of hardware necessary to install the unit. Since the evaporator case has never been installed, your custom installation will require drilling some holes in the evaporator case panels to accommodate the supplied fasteners. The evaporator case is in terrific condition, as you can see in the photographs. I just carefully positioned the evaporator console and shifter housing (on my Baur cabriolet) to show approximate fitment. It is widely known that these units have superior blower fans when compared with period aftermarket '02 A/C systems, like Behr and Frigiking. See photo gallery for pictures of all these items, and be sure to contact me for additional photographs. The understandable photo limitation in this venue just does not allow me to show you every component in detail, but everything is with the kit, as originally sold, plus I have added a few items that you may need.
Other original documents with the kit include Alternate Condenser Installation instructions, Charging The Clardy Air Conditioner Instructions, Compressor Mount diagrams, and a Supplement Sheet (1974-1976) BMW 2002 Auxiliary Fan Installation. While on mentioning these topics, here's a disclosure. This Clardy A/C kit was manufactured in 1984 or 1985. The original Clardy Limited Warranty Owner Protection Card has a generic date of 1982, but the condenser provided in the kit is clearly dated February, 1984. A wiring diagram is also included. The disclosure is that the condenser is likely manufactured for R12 refrigerant (Freon) and not the modern R134a refrigerant. The original condenser comes with the kit, but you may need to invest about $150 in another condenser built for R134a (and, the bigger the condenser, the better). The original condenser may be useful as a template for a more modern version. At least one BMW20002FAQ participant still uses this original style condenser with R12.
Clardy was famous for supplying the Sanden Rotary Compressor when other firms were still using the antiquated York compressors. This Sanden Compressor is still in the original box--I opened the top and took photos but did not remove the compressor. It has never had oil in it, and thus the capped ports are clean with no sign of any oil or residue; truly an NOS rotary compressor, never filled with oil. See pictures.I have packed the evaporator console and shifter housing (and smaller parts) carefully, with lots of bubble wrap, in the original Clardy box. I will then put the original box inside a second box, for added strength and security. I will ship the compressor and Clardy compressor mount and triple-groove pulley in a separate package, again double-boxed.
Be aware that these Clardy A/C kits were designed to utilize your car's face plate ash tray set-up, with the hazard light switch and removable ash tray. I sourced a very good one, and it comes with this package. I also got an ash tray blanking plate, in case you don't want or need a functional ash tray. I also sourced a used, triple-groove V-belt crankshaft pulley for the installation. You will need to replace the single-track factory piece with a triple-groove unit. Periodic vintage kits (like Clardy or Frigiking) traditionally utilize a cast 3-groove pully replacement. I believe this is the correct pulley for a carbureted 2002 in 1974-1976, but it might not be the correct pulley if you have a 2002tii. Anyway, it comes with the deal.
Thank you for looking at this rare NOS Clardy A/C kit. This will be the perfect period look for your 1974-1976 squaretail. Also, the Personal mahogany steering wheel and matching shift knob will set off your interior with beautiful wood and the four-spoke look. Price can be negotiated down some if you don't want the steering wheel and shift knob. Price shown includes shipping to the lower 48. I will ship in four, separate boxes, and among those four boxes I will include the original Clardy box. International buyers please contact me for a revised price to include additional shipping costs. At the price shown, I am essentially splitting the shipping costs with a lower 48 USA buyer.
