This seemed like the most likely place to put this.

In December I bought a '99 M3, very clean, very nice, 57,700 miles. Runs like a bat out of hell.

Anyway, about ten days ago at work, the car was in the parking lot, all by itself, 50 feet from the nearest car and a pizza delivery driver ran into the driver's side of the car hard enough to move the rear wheels 2+ feet sideways. took it to a body shop, $1800, no panel replacement. Talked to State Farm (his insurance), appears to be no problem with the repair, I told them that I wanted a wheel alignment and that seems to be fine with them.

Now, the advice I need pertains to value loss. When I brought it up, she mailed me a WV case (where I live) that she says is the case law in the state. It states that there must be structural damage (which there isn't) and appreciable value (which it has). Now the difference it that this case is from 1990, long before someone could set at their computer and pull a detailed Carfax that will show the accident. Right now, the Carfax shows a minor sheet metal damage accident in 2000. Now this will be the second.

Is there any hope in perusing this and any ideas on how to come up with the value before and after? I would greatly appreciate any and all ideas.

Thanks

I knew this kid from 2001 that lived near me when I was still living with my father. In the past year he has appeared from under a rock when he told me his life story last year that his gf cheated on him, took all his money, this and that and blah blah blah. Maybe he was lying but I gave him $7 so he can get some food. This happened around last April. Since the past year I have seen him walking up and down all over Beacon. I assume he could be homeless? Sucks but I have my own issues to deal with. So just tonight I go over to my local Dunkin Donuts and he happens to be sitting in the backseat of a neon (I didn't see him). As I get out of the e39 I hear a voice and I knew it was him. I'm thinking to myself that he wants $$$$$$ or something so I completely blow him off. He then gets loud with me as I'm walking towards the store saying, "Hey, I'm talking to you". I stopped, turned around with a dirty look and told him, "I'm getting some food"! I stared him down 5 seconds until he turned around and got back in that crappy neon deion. I'm thinking who the hell is this clown getting loud with me? If he wanted some action he could come and get it. From what I recall he wasn't a douche but I guess poverty or whatever has changed him. As I'm in the store I was hoping he wasn't doing any naughty things to the 5er because it would have been me vs at least 3 guys. I'm thinking Jason Bourne time :). As I approach my car I look over to the neon but couldn't see much since it had dark tint and its dark out. So I getz in e39 and take off. No damage to my 5er. It won't be the last time I will run into him again so if he starts off I'll just say that I have no time. If he acts up again then I'll take it from there.

After I turned the car off and started walking away I heard a pop. I turned around and saw smoke/steam coming from my hood and a bunch of water was pouring out from under my car. the steam was mostly the driver side of the car near the airfilter

I'm waiting for the car to cool down before checking the antifreeze, but I doubt its that.

Any suggestions? maybe water pump?

I just had the oil filter housing gasket replace by my mechanic. I wonder if he did something wrong.

Thanks for any help/info

New to O'fest and I don't see any info on what some of the events actually are. If someone can briefly describe what each of the following are that would be great!

BimmerMeet II - is this like a show n shine or something?

closing banquet - what is this other than dinner? is there an awards ceremony or something? Worth paying for if we didn't attend early in the week?

also, we will only be attending Fri, Sat, Sun so the packages don't really apply to us but should we be worried that events will be sold out by the day of the events? Can we get day passes in advance?

Thanks!

I've noticed that the guys here tend to be "conservative" and tend to have low opinions of most of the products out there that claim to have benefits for our cars.

What about MoS2 (Molybdenum Disulphide) as a friction reducer? That does not sound like snake oil to me. Old school proven technology. Lubro-Moly sells a MoS2 treatment that is added to the oil.

I'm assuming you guys think Teflon oil treatments and the like are snake oil. I'm not sure (leaning towards "they don't work" these days). Slick 50 used to claim their Teflon would penetrate and stick to the metal in the engine. I'm quite doubtful of that today.

I have used Slick 50 once or twice in the past with no ill effects (Mazda RX-7 and Toyota 4Runner). But in the Beemer... not so much.

BTW, my 2000 528i has 147k on the clock.

What are the tangible benefits of the BMWCCA Affinity Card?

I probably don't use credit cards like the average user. I pay them off every month so the financing rate and balance transfer benefits are meaningless to me.

Reasons I'm considering the card are:

- Right now, 1 year membership extension (assuming you meet the $100 in 60 days quota)
- No membership fee
- 1% cash back
- Custom picture

There are also fairly vague references to:

- Travel on any airline without blackout dates
- BMW Performance Center driving experiences
- Exclusive travel excursions and sporting events
- Name brand merchandise and gift cards

I cant seem to find any concrete information on those last 4 points (either on BMWCCA or PartnersFirst sites), and from what I've been able to read on the forums there seems to be some unhappiness with the service of the card providers. Naturally, most people don't post to wax poetic about how great things are, so I get that some of the responses in the forum can be one-sided, but what I'm trying to figure out is, is this something worth getting at all?

I don't really want or need another credit card, so the only motivation to get it is if I can receive some tangible value out of it, and I'd want to make sure it's customer service is top notch, otherwise I won't use it. I already get cash back on all credit purchases and never pay any fee whatsoever, so it comes down to the whatever these vague benefits are.

So...can anyone tell me whether or not they've had positive experiences with this card? How are their online tools for account management? Any good customer service stories? How do they count and is it easy to redeem points?

Thanks in advance for any insight,

-Ken

I just recently came into ownership of another 2002, which is fated to be a parts car. I have already begun taking it apart and came across some interesting things.

1) while removing the engine i noticed that it did not have a stock head. The head is marked as a head from an E12 manufactured in 1980. The E12 was the early 5 series designation and i dont believe that a 4-cylinder 5 was ever imported to the US.

2) In the process of removing the engine we had to disconnect a chain from spanning from the driver side box rail to the engine block and a small hydraulic ram from the passenger side box rail to the block. The only thing that i can think of is that they were there to prevent the engine from torquing itself under throttle.

On another note, does anyone know how to determine if the steering box is a quick ratio box?

thanks for the help

my E46 has 161,000 miles on it. Runs like a top, but oil seems to disappear: 1 quart every thousand miles! I say "disappear" because their are no other symptoms like bad mileage, black smoke, or leaks. I've been told that this could be a problem with a malfunctioning PCV valve, particular in colder climes (I live in Vermont), and there is a kit to fix the issue. My questions: 1. has anyone else had this experience? 2. If there is a repair "kit" for a known problem, why isn't this a recall? I've had to add oil more frequently than I thought proper since the car was quite young (though not at the qrt./1000mi rate) and brought it to my dealer's attention back when the car was under warranty. The cost to do this repair: Over $200 for the kit, almost $600 for labor! That's if I do it at the dealer. $200 less labor if I go to a reliable, but unauthorized, garage. Help! randy@teamswork.biz

True hybrid can run on batteries alone

Moving their electric-drive technology down the model line, BMW introduced the Concept 5 Series Active Hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show. Unlike the Active Hybrid 7 Series V8, however, the Fünfer uses a straight-six turbocharged engine in front of the now-familiar eight-speed automatic transmission. Between the engine and transmission is an electrical drive system developed specifically for the 5 Series; drawing its energy from a high-voltage battery near the rear axle, the electric motor develops maximum output of 40 kW (53 horsepower). An automatic clutch connects the engine and the electric motor.[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2240[/FLOATRIGHT]

As in the Active Hybrid 7 Series, the electric motor adds a dash of steroids to the turbo six, providing, in BMW’s words, “extremely spontaneous and dynamic acceleration whenever required.” Meanwhile, both fuel consumption and emissions are reduced by more than 10%.

The drivetrain technology featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series Active Hybrid allows all-electric, zero-emission motoring in city traffic, while special hybrid-based Auto Start Stop function offers additional efficiency by consistently switching off the combustion engine when stopping at the traffic lights, a road junction, or in congested traffic.[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2241[/FLOATLEFT]

The high-voltage battery—developed for this specific car—fits within a high-strength special case near the rear axle to maintain BMW’s near-ideal weight distribution. An integrated control unit permanently analyses the charge status of the high-voltage battery, controlling both the battery-charging process by way of Brake Energy Regeneration and the system cooling process.

[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2242[/FLOATRIGHT]Apart from the electric motor, the high-voltage battery also delivers electric power to the car’s on-board network. Among other things, this allows efficient operation of the car’s auxiliary climate control, which is activated by a remote-control function to cool down the car’s interior significantly—even before starting the engine.

While the Geneva car is only a concept, it could conceivably be in the hands of buyers by next year.

This comes from our brothers and sisters in the White Mountain Chapter

Still thinking about when your first driving event of 2010 will be? Time to clear your April calendar!

Advanced Driving Skills School Saturday April 10

Perfect for all drivers, our ADSS school helps you learn to control your car performs in real life situations. Students advanced car control techniques in the very safe, low speed environment provided for us in the back lot at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Students spend time at our emergency maneuver exercises, skid pad, figure eight and autocross courses. You will learn how your car behaves under emergency braking, lane change, understeer and oversteer conditions -- and most important -- how to correct these by proper use of brakes, steering, throttle, and secondary effects of each. Please check our website at http://www.wmc-bmwcca.org/adss.html for more information about this event and how to register.

High Performance Driving Event Friday April 16

Experienced drivers --- and novices looking to move their skills beyond ADSS -- keep Friday April 16 open! This High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) will be held on the challenging 1.6 mile, 11 turn road course at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. You can expect four on-track driving sessions with in-car instruction, as well as multiple classroom sessions. This year the WMC is pleased to provide professional corner workers at all flagging stations, to maximize your enjoyment and safety. And a stylish event t-shirt to show off in later.

For all of you still "sitting on a wire" - a reminder that the "early bird" price of $180 expires next Tuesday March 16. See http://www.wmc-bmwcca.org/hpd_school.html for more details.

I have a dilemma. I have a paid-for 2001 530i with 112k well-maintained miles as a family car (two small children). Not sure if I want to dump it and take on debt -- we want a Honda Pilot.
I have been in a wait-and-see mode for so long (looking at the Pilot since 2008), I am now caught in the BBD mode. (Bigger Better Deal).
What my motivation has been recently is: take 9 grand for the 5 and put into the new Pilot. Rather than wait for the tranny to go south and then take it in the shorts. I figure I have 20k miles left of trouble-free running in the 5.
It is gambling either way. You may ask, what is holding me back?
1. Taking on debt, even though the deals are really good
2. The lower mileage on the Pilot
3. We're out of winter
4. The economy is far from out of the woods
5. The girls fit comfortably in the 5, and will for a few years

My head hurts

any wisdom is welcome

[wow...to top it all off, I just received a very nice carbon-fiber based writing instrument from BMW in the mail today, 2nd anniversary for the M purchase. It's like.... they know.... somehow.... that I was about to turn.... AAHHHHGGG !!! ... I really like this pen.]

Ok my question is, If my sunroof seal was leaking wouldn't the water go down the drains and out of the car? I really don't think they would design it like that. I remember my e30 had little pipes going down the pillar and drain outside.

I cant take this anymore i don't have the time or money to keep dropping the car off at the dealer and not getting the job done.

BMW finishes behind Chevrolet and SEAT in the WTCC season opener

Chevrolet and SEAT vanquished BMW as the World Touring Car Championship season began at the Curitiba circuit in Brazil.

Chevrolet and SEAT vanquished BMW as the World Touring Car Championship season began at the Curitiba circuit in Brazil.

BMW’s factory 320si team this year is RBM, with cars for Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus. Chevrolet is running three factory team Cruze LTs, while last year’s champion SEAT does not have a factory team in the series, but is supporting privateers who are running the Leon 2.0 TDI. There are six privateer BMWs in the series’ 21-car field.
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2239 Augusto Farfus and Andy Priaulx opened BMW's WTCC season in Brazil. [/FLOATLEFT]
Race one started behind the pace car on a wet and rainy circuit. The pace car pulled in after two laps, and the rain stopped soon after the track went green. Priaulx and Farfus, who had qualified sixth and seventh, finished fifth and sixth in a race dominated by Chevrolet. It was an all bowtie podium, with Chevrolet’s Yvan Muller winning ahead of his teammates Rob Huff and Alain Menu. Defending series champion Gabriele Tarquini finished fourth in his SEAT.

Race two, run in dry conditions, went to Tarquini, who finished ahead of his teammate Jordi Gene. Priaulx retired after contact with Tarquini in the first turn, and Farfus, running in front of his hometown crowd, finished sixth, falling back from his third starting position after contact with another car.

Team RBM principal Bart Mampaey said, “We had a decent first race in very tricky conditions. Andy went for a slightly different set-up to Augusto. While Augusto was quicker in the beginning, Andy was on the pace towards the end. So we finished fifth and sixth, which gave us some points and promising grid positions for the second race. With the track drying out and considering the pace we had shown in the dry earlier this weekend, our expectations were high. But both of our cars were touched by another competitor at the start. While Andy was forced to retire, Augusto was able to prove that we had good pace. But it was just not possible for him to gain more ground. This has been a difficult start to the season. We will look into this and keep on working.”

WTCC competition is scheduled to resume at the Puebla circuit in Mexico on April 11, but on March 8 autosport.com is reporting that the event has been canceled because "local authorities informed series bosses last week that the safety of visitors could not be guaranteed due to unrest in the region." Stay tuned for more details..—Brian S. Morgan, motorsports editor, bmwcca.org

Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas won the Grand-Am Rolex Series race at Homestead Miami Speedway, finishing ahead of the hard-charging Brumos Riley-Porsche of David Donohue/Darren Law. The win, the first of the season for the Dinan BMW-powered prototype, propelled Pruett and Rojas into the series’ points lead.

Law, who started from the pole, led for much of the first 1¾ hours of the race, but his Riley-Porsche lost the lead when he came in for a pit stop with about an hour left in the race. A fire had just been extinguished in a Mazda RX-8 sitting in the middle of the pit road, but when Law came in for his stop the car was still there, forcing him to slow.
Pruett came in for a very quick stop soon after the Riley-Porsche returned to the track with Donohue at the controls. Pruett held onto the lead for the rest of the race, holding off Donohue, who finished a close second. The Starworks Riley-BMW of Ryan Dalziel/Mike Forest finished fifth in its first race.

At the start of the race, Memo Rojas came together with the Riley-Ford of Brian Frisselle, whose car spun as a result. Many believed that a penalty would be forthcoming, but Grand-Am said that the incident was unavoidable side-to-side contact, so Rojas was allowed to continue.

Turner M6 finishes fifth in GT
The Turner Motorsport M6 of Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand finished fifth in GT on a difficult weekend for the team. Because of a power-steering problem, the car had run only a few laps in practice before the race. Still, starting from the back, Auberlen moved the car up, running as high as second. He turned the car over to Hand, who led for several laps on his stint. However, trouble with the left front wheel on a late-race pit stop took the M6 out of contention for a podium spot. The class win went to the Mazda RX-8 of Jeff Segal/Emil Assentato.

The E92s battle restrictors and Mustangs at Homestead

Despite intake restrictors placed on the E92 M3s by Grand-Am, BMWs clawed their way to the front of the pack in Saturday's Continental Challenge race at Homestead.

The restrictors took their toll in qualifying; the fastest qualifying BMW was the seventh-place Fall-Line E92 M3 of Charles Espenlaub/Charles Putman that lined up behind five Mustangs and an Audi.
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2231 A sudden drop in visibility halted Matt Plumb's charge to victory at Homestead. (Grand-Am photo). [/FLOATLEFT]
The Mustangs dominated for the first 1¾ hours of the 2½-hour race, until Matt Plumb took the lead in his Rum Bum E92 M3. But when Eric Curran in one of the Fall-Line M3s had to slow abruptly in traffic, Plumb ran into him. The incident left Plumb’s hood folded back over the windshield, and, flying blind as he tried to return to the pits, he ran into the barrels of sand at the pit entrance, ending his race just eleven laps before the end. Billy Johnson took over in the Mustang he shared with Jack Roush Jr. and held on for the overall and Grand Sport win. The Fall-Line M3 of Terry Borcheller/Andrew Hendricks was second, and the Turner Motorsport M3 of Joey Hand/Michael Marsal was third.

Mini is third and BimmerWorld is fourth in Street Tuner

In the Street Tuner class, Sarah Cattaneo started from the pole in the RSR Mini that she shared with VJ Mirzayan, but the car fell back during the race. In the end, another RSR Mini driven by BJ Zacharias/Craig Conway finished third, and the BimmerWorld E90 328i of Seth Thomas/Bill Heumann finished fourth. The class win went to the Mazda MX-5 of Derek Whitis/Tom Long.

I just ordered the window regulators for both the right and left doors of my 325is. I've been in there before but I've never replaced window regulators. Any tips? I've heard it will be close quarters work!

By the way Bavarian Autoparts also had the battery cover for my trunk. I've been looking for one for a while now. Why does this part always seem to be missing from so many E-30s? I've looked through several junkyards trying to locate one. I'm sure glad they had them.

In addition, does any one know of a better way to install seal belt buckle stops? Bavarian Autoparts sells them and I've installed several, they work great but never seem to stay in place longer than 3 to 4 months. I've tried using a chain breaker tool (for motorcyles) to mushroom the plastic point as uniformily as possible but it always seems to end up less than perfect. Does anyone have experience with these or know of a tool or better procedure to install them?
Turning wrench as always!

I have the a chance to pickup a 1989 750 il engine for possible use in a 1947 Kaiser-Frazer project car.

Does anyone know of a thread or source of info on running this motor in a "'manual mode" without the brain box via carbs and a conventional ignition system?

I also understand that this motor will mate with a manual 6 speed transmission from a 540. Can anyone recommend a source for information on this?

The conversion would replace a 100 hp cast iron 6 cylinder w/ a manual 3 speed, therefore I don't care if the conversion results in less hp then the factory setup.

Thanks!

My wife's 2005 X5 had a rather abrubt stop related to the Honda CRV in front of her the other day. She's OK, X5 not so much. No one at accident scene noticed that radiator / coolant recover bottle sprung a leak, and with the cold weather and snow police asked her to keep it running and stay warm.... not sure what capability the DME has to track the situation. From what I guess, the DME should have seen low coolant first, then perhaps an overheat, and then (and I am hoping here) initiated an automatic shutdown BEFORE reaching a critical failure temperature. The car is at a local BMW shop, and they claim that's pretty much what the system reports... coolant low, thermostat, shutdown. I could not get them to show me, and not to be a doubting thomas but we're talking $13,000 in damage w/o an engine issue. I'd like to hear from someone in the know that the X5 DME 1) could definitively initiate a shutdown and 2) at what temperature would it do so. I'm assuming coolant temp would not be the trigger, since it was pretty much gone... ugh. Insurance company has been really good so far, and they want to know about any potential motor issues before fixing all the cosmetics and finding out the motor has been compromised.

A tech inspection form is attached to this material and is to be completed, signed and brought to registration.
Waivers - You will find attached two waivers. One is a general release of all claims against BMW CCA and the other a helmet acknowledgment and release. These two waivers should be completed prior and brought to the registration.
Open cars - Open cars and convertibles are not allowed.

TRACK DAY PREPARATION AND PROCEDURES
There will be a pre-registration available Thursday evening by the pool at Motel 6 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Registration will also be available Friday morning at the track around 7:15 am. It is your responsibility to arrive to the track on time, get registered, attend the driver meeting and get prepared for your sessions.
Upon arrival at the track, you will need to find a parking spot and empty your car of all loose objects, including hubcaps and trim rings.
There will be designated passing zones and passing will only be done within these designated areas, except when "Open Passing" is initiated in the A/B run group sessions, which will be announced by the instructor group. We will be using the point-by rules and will be strictly enforced. No point-by, no pass.
There will be no timing allowed at this event.
There is a 10-mile per hour speed limit in the paddock area. This will be strictly enforced.
We at the Central California Chapter of the BMW Car Club are looking forward to your participation with us at this event. Please review your general release for this event as it contains a separate paragraph concerning your personal automobile insurance. It is important to understand that the Central California Chapter makes no representation as to the applicability of your personal automobile insurance for coverage during this event.

I also posted on the tech talk forum, but I'm newbie, so not sure where I should have posted:

Hi. I have a 2006 BMW M5. For a couple of months now the car has had a slight vibration inbetween 2150 and 2350 RPM in every gear. I took the car to the dealer and the SA felt the vibration, but upon checking the car they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

It's a light vibration, but defenitely there. It feels like I'm running over a small patch of rumble strips. It deos it in virtually every gear between 2150 and 2350 rpm. It's very annoying when I'm in say, 4th gear and going about 40 miles per hour. It's a normal speed to be in and the vibration is driving me crazy. I rode with the SA and I felt it from the passenger seat, but when your hands are on the wheel, it's more noticeable.

Please help. Dealer cannot find anything wrong with it, but it has never done this before. My car has 44k miles and it had a new clutch and flywheel put in by the dealer under warranty in Nov 2009. It's a 7 speed SMG.

Thanks.

Okay, I have owned my new 2009 328i convrtible for about a month now and I either have not noticed this before, or something changed, or something is wrong:

I parked the car (automatic transmission) in the garage and shut it off and left, locking the doors with the key fob. Later, when I stopped in the garage to drop off some trash, I noticed that the amber indicator light next to the letter "P" on the shift selector was illuminated. Yes indeed the car was in Park, but it was not on - this seems like odd behavior, or at least wasteful of energy, unless it's trying to tell me something.

Starting the car and shifting out of Park and then back does not fix the issue. When I stop the engine and leave, the light remains on. It's been an hour now and that little LED is still lit - nothing else is on. Just the little amber light telling me I'm in Park.

Is this normal behavior and I'm just weird, or what? I've tried to RTFM and find no mention of this.

Thanks for any help.

This is going to be our first O'fest, sorry about the rookie questions.

Me and my wife are planning to drive our e21 from California -- we will be in the area the whole week. We are looking at the schedule and some things are not clear:

1) Does the daily pass include everything that is happening that day? We have 1 car and it's two of us- I assume we need to get two passes for each day?

2) If we want to do some events that are happening during the day, do we just buy daily pass and skip events, or we can pay for each event separately? (Like TSD rallies for example)

3) Is it possible to just come by and see a driving school or club race? Are daily passes needed to come inside?

We are mainly interested in the concours, all the rallies and maybe autocrossing!

Thank you,

Are reconditioned wheels a good idea or bad idea?

I have some flat spots on the inner rims of 3 of my 4 wheels that were most likely caused by potholes. A couple of them are pretty significant. So I'm looking for a solution.

Some vendors on eBay and the web talk about wheel reconditioning. I had my own wheels reconditioned about 13 months ago and they came out looking great. But I knew the history on the wheels since I was the original owner of the car and knew the reconditioning was going to be more cosmetic than structural.

However, now that I have to replace my wheels, I'm concerned about buying reconditioned wheels that I don't know the history of. I was looking at RTW Wheels online and they seem to have a very large investment in machines and years of history, so they may be a good bet. But I've heard horror stories about micro-fractures and other problems with light alloy wheels like mine that make me hesitate.

Does anyone have any experience they could share with me?

Thanks,

Ty

BMW South County partners with San Diego Chapter

Dealership provides membership—and member service

Dealership provides membership—and member service

Like several other enthusiast-oriented BMW dealerships, San Diego’s BMW South County supports its local chapter, going as far as paying for a one-year membership for each new-car or CPO purchaser. But BMW South County goes even farther, tailoring dealership events to intersect with Club activities. “We’ve been putting on Women Only tech session,” says Nick Owen, a service tech at the facility. “We get anywhere from eight to a dozen women and pick a few cars to put up in the air and talk about what various components look like, and their function. We offer this to both customer and Club members, because we hope we can get customers to join the Club so they’ll participate more often.”
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2226BMW South County offers “Women Only” tech sessions for all their customers, not just Club members.[/FLOATLEFT]
Those free memberships to buyers are more than just a token gesture; Owen serves as a natural point of contact because he is also vice president of the San Diego Chapter. His interactions between the chapter and BMW South County—primary sponsors of the chapter’s autocross season—have convinced him that dealer support of the CCA builds a loyal business clientele.

“We're implementing a tracking system into the software program we use at the store,” says Owen. “This will allow us to keep CCA membership information on file, so customers can register with us, have their membership number and expiration date on file, and automatically give them their 10% discount so they will not have to bother asking. This will also provide BMW CCA and us with data as to how much members spend—and on what.”

The dealership is also looking into a method of letting CCA members register with the dealership on line so their data is complete when they visit the dealership.

This win-win relationship between chapter and dealership allows a genuine measure of the importance of dealer loyalty and Club support—and may well allow the San Diego Chapter to increase by 50% in the next year.—Satch Carlson

Hi, Folks -

Nice to be here; there seems to be a great deal of knowledge and experience that I hope to learn from. I've been a member since January of this year but just getting around to getting into the forums. Don't know much about how to use all the features (avatars, icons, pictures, etc) but I guess I'll learn as I go along.
As a recently retired airline pilot, I have more time now to pursue my hobbies. My newest is restoring a basket case. More about that later.
I've had three BMWs. The first was a 1971 1600 that I bought in California in 1984 while I was in the Army, and kept only long enough to learn that fixing it up and maintaining it was well beyond my capabilities. I traded that in on a nice '76 2002 four-speed. Had some body and paint work done on it, put 318 wheels on it and brought it back to New York when I left the Army.in 1988. The New York winters took their toll on that car, and in 1995, when I got tired of trying to keep up with the rust, I traded it on a 1988 325. I drove that for about three years and finally sold it outright.
Twelve years later, I was driving down a street in a small village here in Orange County, NY and I saw a blue '76 2002A in a driveway with a sign on it - $2500 OBO - and stopped to check it out. Not too bad overall, rust where you would expect it; sills, shock towers, lower rear quarters and spare tire well, but otherwise sound and running reasonably well. Didn't really want an automatic, but there was just something about the car that I couldn't resist. So I gave the guy $2250 and the love affair began all over again. I decided to do it right, so I took everything that I could off and out of the car. Of course, the more I did, the more I realized I needed to do...
The transmission has been rebuilt, the engine has been bored and boiled, with new pistons and bearings, and the body work has begun. Parts are reasonably available, though expensive, and I'll be leaning on BMWCCA members for help and advice, like, does anyone know where I can get a complete[ trim and moulding kit with all the clips and fasteners, so that I don't have to buy everything piecemeal from a dozen different sources?
I hope I haven't bored or offended anyone with too much information. I'll post some pictures as soon as I figure out how to do that...

Regards -

Mike B.

I hope I picked the right forum to post in for this question.

I am nearing my first year of being a member of BMWCCA, I joined in March ’09 the same day I bought my first BMW.

Because of the wonderful welcome of the Houston chapter (woohooo Road Mokeys) and the amazing time I had attending O’fest with this group I decided a few months ago to go ahead and sign up for the lifetime membership prior to the price increase.

I am 45 and hopefully I will make it another 20 years to where it will pay for itself the same as if I bought a yearly membership or 5 year blocks or any of the alternatives.

But I wanted to share with you a bit of my disappointment to the limit of benefits of a lifetime membership.

Basically I no longer have to remember to renew my membership and they are going to send me a pin and of course I am not subject to membership fee increase but those are all of the benefits a lifetime membership provides.

Oh one more thing and I found this funny. If I had renewed for another year and gotten the BMWCCA credit card it would have paid for my renewal, but the club did not even allow me to get the same amount of the one year renewal credited to the price of the lifetime membership but I got the card anyway to support the club and they do have good interest rates.

Even with that in mind because of the fun I have been having with my local chapter and O’fest I decided to go ahead and spend the money.

I would however like the club to take another look at this and see if they could come up with a few more benefits for people willing to become a lifetime member. Obviously membership fees are very important to the club so wouldn’t it be worth it to provide them with a few other benefits.

By the way another member of our local chapter also asked me to mention that if a person has been a member for a consecutive 20 years or more purchasing one year or five year memberships they also should receive some benefit like maybe just freezing the membership fee for any future years beyond 20.

Off the top of my head I don’t have any specific suggestions as to other benefits, it could be as little as a ball cap, polo shirt, t-shirt or anything. But to have the big prize being a pin I just found that a bit lacking. Don’t get me wrong I am a very happy member of the club and am now committed for life. Sure hope I make it the 20 years so I get my money’s worth (said tongue in cheek.)

Okay if convertibles were allowed to do the driving school I would sign up for the M1 package for $498. But it is not allowed. However, I want to do everything else in that package.

Can I do so and subtract the $250 cost of the driving school bringing my registration fee to $248?

Or do I have to buy package M2 for $220 plus then add $35 for autocross and $60 for the car control clinic bringing it up to $315.

That would make me spend $67 more because I own a convertible.

Fair?????

I found the "Touring" in the Autotrader online from Motorcars International, a Euro Specialty used car Dealer in Bridgewater Mass.

It's Ti Silver with a black interior and was in exceptional shape at a very reasonable price. Looking forward to making a few tasteful mods (iPod & Sirius interface, K&N filter, etc.) to personalize it a little.

The "Touring" now takes it's place next to my Roadster to serve as foul weather and large cargo transportation

Wondering if any one has had to deal with a rear main seal (engine) leak on an E-39 540i? My indy tells me they have seen quite a few of these and usually in much worse condition than mine. Based on the Bentley's repair manual the fix looks fairly involved. I was quoted almost $1K for the repair (about 12 hours of labor and $150-200 in parts. Fair/reasonable? If I go ahead with this repair (which I probably will since the leak will only get worse) is there anything else - repair/replace wise - I should get done while it's apart and in the air? Thanks.

My question deals with the display screen of my iDrive. I would like to turn it totally off at times, especially at night. After I select the "Display Off" button, the screen does indeed go blank, but is still dimly illuminated with a blueish tint. Am I missing something here? I want it OFF - totally black.
Thanks in advance for your help!

This is my second E46, the first was crashed. Both cars had the same anomaly. When I am stopped with the car in gear periodically the idle will briefly dip below 5400 RPM shacking the car then go right back up to where it is supposed to be. This happens about a couple of times a day but not often enough to replicate it for a dealer service technician.
Anyone else experience this? Any ideas?

2010 BMW CCA National Election results: Goldsman, Sullivan and Cowan win contested contests; bylaw changes pass

Balloting for the 2010 BMW CCA...

2010 BMW CCA National Election results: Goldsman, Sullivan and Cowan win contested contests; bylaw changes pass

Balloting for the 2010 BMW CCA national election is complete and the results are in. Louis Goldsman, challenged by Michael Harman, has been re-elected to the position of BMW CCA Treasurer. Boston Chapter’s John Sullivan won a three way battle for NorthAtlantic Regional RVP. Pacific Region RVP Steve Johnson decided not to run for re-election this year. Delight Lucas of LA Chapter and Jeff Cowan of the Golden Gate Chapter threw their hats into the ring and Cowan emerged successful.

The amendment to Article 5, conforming the Club’s election procedures to contemporary standards carried 1175 to 46. The amendment to Article 7, distinguishing between the Annual Meeting and General Membership Meetings passed 1168 to 54. The amendment to Article 13, permitting alternate by law ballot distribution passed 1150 to 69.

The election was conducted online and by paper ballot with a total of 2,652 ballots cast, approximately 200 ballots more than were cast in 2009.

“I want to thank and congratulate everyone who ran for the Board in this election,” said CCA president Bruce Hazard. “The quality of candidates was outstanding; I’m sure all of the winners will serve the Club well. And those who ran but didn’t win also exemplify the spirit of the BMW Car Club; they will continue to contribute, because that’s the kind of high-quality volunteers they are.”

He ended his remarks on a philosophical note. “The energy, dedication and leadership that Steve Johnson brought to the Board will be missed, particularly in light of his installation of two new chapters in the Pacific Region in 2009.”

“Even though Michael Harman, Delight Lucas, Dyke Morrissey, and Scott Stowell did not win their elections, I want to thank them for having the initiative to run for office and for offering their skills to our Club. I know we will see much more from each of them in the future.”

The newly elected officers will be installed at the BMW CCA Annual Meeting, scheduled for March 20, 2009, at the BMW CCA National Office in Greenville, South Carolina.

I knew they could be overpriced, but I was always skeptical about the stories of dealers messing up...until it happened to me.

After having my oil changed at the local BMW dealership, I parked my car and didn't move it for about two weeks due to snow-storms. When I finally moved it, there was a small puddle of oil on my garage floor. I took it to the dealer to have them check it out. They said the drain plug had "bad threads" and that I needed to either have it repaired with a heli-coil ($300), or get a whole new oil pan($1800). I thought the dealer should take some responsibility for the damamge. So, I mentioned to the advisor what a coincidence it was that I never had any problems until they changed my oil. He said "sometimes the threads just get stripped" and his tech did nothing wrong.

I told my boss (who is a PCA clubracer), and he insisted that the best fix was a time-sert instead of a helicoil. So, I took my car to an independent shop where he has his cars worked on. They put it up on the lift to do the time-sert, and the mechanic says "There's nothing wrong with your car, this drain-plug is fine." Needless to say, I was happy but shocked. He said it looked like a tech spilled a little oil and it slowly leaked out. So, I guess the dealership mechanics DIDN'T EVEN LOOK AT IT, and they were fine charging me $300-1800 to do a repair that didn't need to be done.

The joy of test days: the ALMS season begins

BMW Rahal Letterman brought its two M3 GTs to the American Le Mans Series winter test days at Sebring for the first sessions of what promises to be...

BMW Rahal Letterman brought its two M3 GTs to the American Le Mans Series winter test days at Sebring for the first sessions of what promises to be an exciting season. There were 28 cars at the test, including 11 in the GT2 class, where the M3s run.

New driver pairings and new livery for BMW

The team’s biggest news was the change in driver pairings; this year Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner will share car #92, while Auberlen’s old teammate Joey Hand (they’re still paired in the Turner M6 in Grand-Am) will share car #90 with Dirk Müller, Milner’s BMW RLR teammate last season. Dirk Werner, who will be part of the Team Schnitzer European M3 effort this season, was also in car #90 at Sebring.

Werner and Priaulx will race at Sebring in March. On February 27, ALMS released the entry list for the 12-Hour race. Werner is listed as a co-driver with Auberlen and Milner in car #92, and Andy Priaulx is listed as a co-driver in car #90 with Hand and Müller.

[floatleft]Attachment 2218 The "red" and "blue" BMW RLR M3s debuted their new livery and new driver pairings at the ALMS winter test. (BMW NA photo) [/floatleft]
The M3s sported new livery at Sebring in support of BMW’s new “Story of Joy” marketing campaign. As Jim Ringold noted here yesterday, the cars are color coded; #90 is “blue” and #92 is ‘red.” Each car’s outside mirrors, rear wings, and front splitters were highlighted in the appropriate colors, while the word “Joy” appeared in big letters in a rather joyless gray on both cars. Words and phrases associated with the joy campaign appear on the rear quarter panels, all the better for competitors to see them.

Racers, start your sandbags

If test day times are to be believed, the M3s will be front runners this season. Only the Risi Competizione Ferrari 430GT of Jamie Melo/Gianmaria Bruno turned a faster lap than the #92 M3. The Ferrari’s best was a 2:02.286, while the M3’s best was 2:02.584.
[floatright]Attachment 2219 Competitors should have a clear view of words and phrases associated with BMW's "Story of Joy" campaign. (BMW NA photo) [/floatright]
But it was a test session, and teams were not always gunning for fast laps. It's even possible that they were sandbagging. Not only that, the 100-pound gorilla, Corvette, was missing from the room. The Chevrolet team, which will most likely be a top contender at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March, did not run its cars in the winter test.

BMW would like an anniversary present

2010 is the 35th anniversary of BMW NA, and it’s also the 35th anniversary of BMW’s first overall win at Sebring. In 1975, the 3.5 CSL of Brian Redman, Allan Moffat, Hans Stuck, and Sam Posey took the overall win. BMW won again in 1999, when J.J. Lehto, Tom Kristensen, and Jörg Müller piloted their V12 LMR to victory.
[floatleft]Attachment 2220 Joey Hand and Dirk Müller will share car #90 this season. (BMW NA photo) [/floatleft]
This year, BMW is not a contender for the overall win; one of the prototypes will most likely get that honor. But the BMW-Rahal Letterman Racing M3s will undoubtedly be contenders for the GT win.

The 12 Hours of Sebring runs on March 20. Come on down to celebrate BMW NA’s 35th anniversary and watch the M3s do battle in what has to be one of the most competitive classes in pro racing today. See you in the BMW CCA corral.—Brian S. Morgan, motorsports editor, bmwcca.org

Just recently joined bmwcca, here is my 84 318i with a rebuilt 91 m30b35 out of an e32. I used a g260/6 5speed from an e34 535i, and the usual e28 radiator, custom engine mounts, early 325e driveshaft, custom exhaust. After trying out 3 different ratios, I have stuck with the s3.46 for now. The chassis did also get 325i front/rear brakes a while back to get rid of the rear drums.

Interior and exterior has changed a few times (had the plastic bumper conversion for a little bit, few different wheels, different interior etc, about 3 or 4 different suspension setups).

Total weight of the car as it is right now is 2500lb with half a tank of gas, no driver in the car.

LF 703 RF 741
LR 530 RR 526

This is with full interior, no spare, no jack and no a/c compressor (not installed yet). No sound or weight reduction. On 15x6 bbs ra with 205/50 bfg g-force tires, corbeau seats, drum to disk convertion etc.

On to the pictures:

It looked like this when I first got her, cracked dash, worn interior, drum brakes, ****ty m10 and all, the list was looong.

After doing full suspension/interior overhaul it now looked like this for a while (interior is no longer blue though).

Replaced the seats, e-brake console/e30m3 boot, dash, front/rear glass, front upper headliner piece and installed e30m3 rear shelf since my car does not have a 3rd brake light to name a few major items...the list is too long.

Here's the deal:

The event 'officially' runs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (August 24, 25, and 26) of the week of Oktoberfest 2010. Registration will be through the Oktoberfest website. There is a check box for the 3-day 5er Fest that will trigger the special rates we have. The normal fee for these three days is $130. For 5er Fest attendees, it will be $95 if you are already a BMW CCA member. For non-members, it will be $130, which will include a one-year 'CCA membership that usually costs $48. For the full week, registration is the same price as Oktoberfest, but you will get all the benefits of 5er Fest (like apparel, prizes, and anything else we come up with) in addition. All registrations include access to all Oktoberfest events to which the day passes entitle you, including receptions, meals and driving events. Please note that, if you are not registering with an E12, E28, or E34, we want you to check in at the 5er Fest website so we can find a way to include you.

Driver schools and autocross will cost the same additional fees. We will consider additional autocross awards for 5er Fest attendees, but all 5ers will run in Class 7 (B or C) or 'Race' on Thursday. It is still possible we'll have a separate autocross on Wednesday, but no firm plans as yet. If we do that, we will not be running in the regular O'Fest autocross. I don't think anyone will have a problem with that.

Oktoberfest registration opens March 1.

The club does not have access to the track on Tuesday, so the initial contact will be wherever Oktoberfest check-in/registration is being held. I don't know whether that will be at Osthoff, Siebkins, or at the track's 'outside the paddock' registration building. Tuesday is the day of the Oktoberfest concours, so it you plan to enter, or just go, plan on it immediately after you arrive.

Wednesday will be a day to choose what you want to do. We will have a gathering point at the Badger Bimmers' "Bimmer Bivouac" across the track from pit entrance (at the bottom of the front straight). Yes, you can bring beers. There will be a lunch at the track for all O'Fest attendees, including 5er Fest attendees. If someone wants to organize a separate 5er concours, this would the time and place to have it. Otherwise, check the Oktoberfest schedule on the registration page to see what you want to do. We may have a separate autocross that afternoon. It would be on the other side of the track facility, at the Motorplex track. We can roll out the Big Damn© grille for a late afternoon/evening meal. I am going to suggest someone pick up a buncha' good old Wisconsin brats to be tortured on said grille until they become edible. Beers are acceptable here, too.

Thursday will be the Oktoberfest autocross to run, if we didn't run on Wednesday. Otherwise, there are Oktoberfest activities to choose from. We will again roll out the Big Damn© gas grille at the Bimmer Bivouac for your dining pleasure. Bring beers. Bear in mind another buffet at Road America. [If anyone leaves Oktoberfest hungry, it's their own damn fault.]

I am purposely not scheduling many 5er-exclusive events because that's the very nature of Oktoberfest. No one can physically do everything that's offered. Trust me; I've tried (1988, 1989). :( You are in a place with a bunch of BMW enthusiasts and you choose what you want to do with your car. I am definitely not entering the concours and, in fact, I've completely missed it before (2008), but I know some of you will want to be there. Some of you may want to drive a rally and some may want to do a driver school or car control school. All of this stuff conflicts, so we will be scattered to the four winds - but that is the plan. I plan to have the Bimmer Bivouac as a 'base of operations' since nothing is very far away, we can relax and socialize there, and there's more room than we can possibly use. When the sun goes down, we'll find another place to hang out. You're an inventive bunch.

BTW, the location of the Bimmer Bivouac raises the possibility of the return of the Creeper Races. The access road from which we reach the area runs up a hill right there ... :D

If you hang around at MyE28.com, you already know about this because that's where I 'live'. But if you don't, here's the deal:

I assume they mean the upper thrust arm bushings.....but what about the lower control arm bushings?

Do the worn out lower control arm bushings or ball joint act the same way?

Which one is likely to give out and be the cause of the shimmy??

And should I replace both the upper and lower ?
thanks guys and gals

I'm hoping someone can help me find out how I can get this situation resolved. Almost six months ago, my "run flat" tire disintegrated on interstate 84 in New York. I called BMW Roadside who arranged for the vehicle to be towed to Prestige BMW. The guys at Prestige where great to deal with and they got me back on my way within a couple hours.

After I returned home (to North Carolina) I mailed the original towing receipt along with a letter that contained the information required for reimbursement. After a month or so had passed, I inquired about the reimbursement and was told they never received the information. Luckily, I had scanned the receipt and I was able to fax it over to the representative I spoke to. Another month passed and still no reimbursement check so I called again. This time the agent told me that the person I faxed the information to was a part-time worker and requested that I fax the information over again -which I did. Some more time had passed and someone left me a voicemail stating that their company isn't the one to handle my reimbursement and that I need to contact someone else. Here's the problem... I called them back and they can't tell me who to contact!

Please, someone tell me how I can resolve this situation and obtain my reimbursement.

I parked my 00 540is 6spd last night in heavy rain.
6am my bro is leaving for work and he comes back in to tell me ALL my lights are on. I jump out of bed in my boxers and grab my keys, before i even got to the door i smelled an electrical fire! my brother is now walking around the car and suddenly yells FIRE!@!!@@

I see smoke puffing out where my jack pad used to be, i open a door and the whole car is full of toxic smoke. Next move ripped the battery out and the smoke stopped. Car was 30sec away from lighting up the carpet.

I got the kick panel open and found a melted blob of a LKM. i don't see an water or anything but im almost positive this had to do with the rain.

My questions are
1: Has this happened to anybody else? (water destroying the LKM)
2: What else would cause this?
3: Can i buy a used LKM and get it coded or does it have to be new? Im handicapped and and i really cant afford to pay 400 for the LKM and another 300 to code it.

And is there a drain that can get clogged and would cause this to get wet?

Ive been a BMWCCA member for almost 10 years and know all the parts dept guys by first name. BUT the service dept at BMW OF BAYSIDE is horrible. Nobody would give me 2 minutes to get a question answered before i went and spent 500 bux on an LKM. They don't care that i own 2 e30s, 2 e34s, and this e39. Seemed like they only help you if u own a brand new M or 7 series. Really disappointed in my first experience with BMW service Dept.in 10 years. (i do most of all my work) but i don't have the fancy BMW computer to code the LKM. They say is gonna cost about 300 bux to connect their computer to code the miles on my LKM.

Is there any other options to get this coded? Can a used one be coded?
I cannot believe this! There is NO WAY I could have known about such a date nad is printed NO WHERE on my materials/closing papers!
After 36 years of BMW's (over 17 vehicles and countless referrals) they end our relationship just like that!

“Red car” and “blue car” spread BMW joy in Florida

Sebring’s Winter Test Days provide an opportunity to view almost three dozen serious race cars working on their setups for the upcoming 12 Hours of Sebring. This group included two BMW M3 Race Cars—#90 and #92—being tested very methodically by BMW-Rahal Letterman Racing.[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2212Joy to the world: The BMW-Rahal Letterman M3s celebrate BMW's new advertising mantra.[/FLOATRIGHT]

Can we thank the demise of the BMW F1 effort for the full-press effort Rahal is making this season with the M3s? The two racy M3s—one color-coded red, the other blue—have their own individual pit crews. This is the kind of effort exhibited by the likes of Audi and Peugeot. BMW racing fans can rest assured that a committed, very professional, and expensive effort is underway with the BMW M3s.

[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2209The foreground car is "red," the other "blue": note the tape on the mirrors. Each car gets a complete technical crew.[/FLOATLEFT]The drivers say the new M3 drives like a new car—a really improved new car. And they sound better; even though the engines are the same as last year, the exhaust note has changed. While they don’t sound like M3 GTR race cars of the old ALMS championship, they do sound like very healthy V8s. More exhaust noise adds to the joy.

[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2210The BMW-Rahal Letterman M3s carry their most important decal on the front splitter.

[/FLOATRIGHT][FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2213"There I was, see...": Bill Auberlen (seated) gives Tommy Milner—his new co-driver for 2010—a flying lesson.[/FLOATRIGHT]Evidently all plastic parts have been banished to the production, M3s because these racers have been through a simulated twelve-hour race with no significant problems. Again, this is the type of preparation Audi has conducted with their LMP cars. All memories of the rough start to last year’s campaign have been banished from the team.

[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2211Two AC Schnitzer M3s have been entered for Le Mans. Will the BMW-Rahal Letterman racers join them?[/FLOATLEFT]Is there a 24 Hours of Le Mans in the future of these two M3s? That is very possible, from the looks of the cars and the race team. If so, it would certainly be exciting to see the Le Mans M3s compete for the first time at the 12 Hours of Sebring. See you there!—Jim Ringold

I have 2001 540i 6 speed at 85k miles.

Have maintained it well with short intervals in changing fluids and filters. Have cleaned MAF sensor & checked for stored codes & shows no codes. Have checked drive train and mounts and guibo appear OK.
Changed tranny fluid with MTF-LT-2 (have yellow label on tranny with MTF-LT-1). Rear Diff good shape.

OK, here's the problem....

Recently noted a 'bump' or 'slip & catch' like sensation at take off in 1st gear. Feels like, but less intense than, if the DSC cuts out for just a second. Not light on panel seen as with true DSC cut out.

Doesn't occur every time and SEEMS to be related to RPM at take-off. That is, with gentle RPM increase and gentle clutch release, it seems less often occuring. Opposite, with letting clutch out with less RPM support, seems have this "slip & catch" sensation more often.

Over-all, to me, it is variable at it's occurence.

Could this be a Electronic Throttle Body issue??
Would it need cleaning?
If so, how do I clean it ?? (that is how to take it off or apart to get at the area needed to cleaned?)

Suspension or bushing movment??

Any thots are most welcome.....

Grateful for help in advance

I called my agent who told me that I would need an appraisal or letter from a recognized car club stating a value in order to get anything more than book value. Seems to me that I vaguely remember a service like that in our club. Anyone know anything about that?

Women to descend for April driving event

Probably it’s the inevitable result of a Northeast winter: the Boston Chapter’s Jackie Bechek has organized a Women’s Only Getaway Weekend set for April 15–19. “We’ll have a full-day private lesson for our group at the BMW Performance Driving School in Greenville, South Carolina, taught by their professional drivers,” says Bechek. “It’s a chance for women to learn safety-driving skills, such as accident avoidance, proper use of ABS brakes, and inclement-weather handling conditions. We will have full access of the Center’s facilities, including the famous skid pad, which simulates black-ice conditions, and the twisty 1.7-mile race track, which will be configured to simulate real-world driving conditions.”[floatright]Attachment 2208
The BMW Performance Driving school offers an antidote for winter, along with tools for dealing with it.
[/floatright]

While the driving school is a useful tool against winter—“We guarantee you will gain confidence and courage from this course, and come home to better enjoy your ultimate driving machine!” says Bechek—the rest of the weekend is a luxurious break from a long, dismal season. “After a full day at the Performance Center,” says Bechek, “we’ll drive to Asheville, North Carolina, in the Center’s own BMWs, and pamper ourselves with a two-night stay at the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa. The Inn’s fabulous facilities, restaurants, and spa are legendary, and provide a restful vacation in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The views alone will comfort you!”[floatleft]Attachment 2207
You can treat yourself to a luxurious massage, facial, or body treatment, and finally work out those tired muscles. The Spa also has a wonderful full workout facility to keep you in shape and rested on the trip.

Finally, the group will be treated to lunch at the legendary Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Once the Vanderbilt summer home, it is now a working estate and historical museum; the famous gardens and beautifully appointed 250-room mansion is a national treasure.[floatright]Attachment 2206
The all-inclusive trip is organized by the BMW Performance Center, and includes four nights’ lodging, spa treatment, driving school, meals—including lunch at the Biltmore Estate—and transfer transportation for a total of $1,995—a substantial saving from regular rates. “This is an incredible opportunity to improve your road skills, have fun, and enjoy some relaxation as well!” says Bechek. I am bringing it to the BMW Seattle dealership tomorrow where the oil is being changed, they are doing a scope, etc., all covered under the service program.
Should I consider doing the CPO or extended warranty program when my warranty is up in June?

Sponsored by Bavarian Autosport

We will NOT be Ice Racing on Sunday, February 28th! There is a fishing derby being held on the lake, and since we have managed to run three events in a row, we won't try to accommodate the complication of hundreds of fishermen this weekend. Stay tuned for information on the next Ice Race!

And yes, the Parker Spooner Memorial Ice Race was a big fun success yesterday!
------------------------------

Please remember that Pre-Registration is REQUIRED! If you read the Rules on the website, you can see that you need to Pre-Register ONCE for the SEASON for EACH driver-vehicle-tire combination. If ANY of those three items will be different at the next event you attend, you MUST either Pre-Register again, or in certain circumstances you may e-mail me.

Please, PLEASE read all the Rules on the website! Almost every question can be answered there. Thanks for your cooperation, and keep your fingers crossed for some cold weather later this week!

See you on the ice!

Either I'm completely blind or there is a serious lack of any driving events in any of the Florida BMWCCA chapters. I was a little disappointed to that fact, as it was one of the main reasons I joined - hearing all the great stories of driving events going on elsewhere in the country. Right now it seems like I'm paying $50/yr. for a Roundel subscription. It's great, but I was looking forward to actually having more opportunities to drive my car ;)

I currently run autocrosses with SCCA, PCA, and another local club - but I just got back from doing an HPDE @ Roebling Road with the FL Citrus Region PCA and I'm itching to do more. I would really like to find some BMWCCA hosted events in the tri-state area (FL/GA/AL). Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

Has anyone else experienced this weird and scary problem? I was driving on the highway in San Diego somewhere in the vicinity of 65 mph, when suddenly I heard a chime, the interior light came on, I heard some wind noise, and I noticed that my door was ajar! Fortunately, I was wearing a seatbelt and was able to simply grasp the interior door handle and pull it closed.

I thought this was one-off weirdness, but I searched some other BMW sites and found a few people in 3 and 7 series reporting the same problem. At least one has pointed to a door latch or latch cable problem. I'm going to ask my dealer to check it out while it's in the shop for TPM issues.:(

Hey Guys,

New to the forum, long time member. I live in the Denver area and have had BMWs in my life for many years. The 2002 and M3 don't see the light of day much in the winter months and I am actively looking to replace my current dailey driver with a '91 318is. If anyone knows of a rust free, good example that is for sale please let me know. The '89 ix is an automatic that belonged to my daughter and I just can not bring myself to drive anything that does not have a clutch. The BMW forums have a wealth of information that I have been accessing for years, however I have recently decided to take the plunge and become an active participant.

I acquired my '99 M Roadster (replacing my '00 S4) last Summer and had a blast before putting it away in mid-December as my Suburban ('97, 238K mi) takes over during the Winter here in the Chicago area which lasts forever, or so it seems when you have a roadster stored and the snow and ice show just won't go away. This is the first time I have had to endure storing a favorite motor-toy for the bad weather months (not counting bikes) and I hate it to the point of contemplating relocation (was that Chandler AZ position on Monster or DICE?).

Two questions: best BMW shop in the NW or West Chicago suburbs and where in the world can I get a hard top? Local BMW dealers and even Bavarian Autosport told me I was SOL in trying to get a hard top for my beloved new (to me) M Roadster.

Thanks!
