Non-Sport to Sport Suspension Conversion

I currently have a 2003 530i non-sport sedan with 50K miles. I would like to put the sport suspension under it ONLY to lower the appearance of the car. I've read about all kinds of aftermarket struts & springs and have no desire to begin experimenting with non-OEM suspension components.

What would be required to properly change the suspension out to lower the car for the sport-package height? Is it just changing to the sport package struts/shocks/springs or is there more involved? The balance of the suspension (all control arms, etc) were replaced at 45K (I like that tight new car feel) so I don't want to replace anything that's newer if I don't have to.

Thanks-

I'm having this reoccurring 4x4 error pop up when I make turns in my 2006 330xi (E90). It used to happen the most when I make slow speed, sharp turns as in parking garage maneuvering. It used to happen primarily in really cold weather, but now it happens all the time. Turning off the car, pausing, and turning it back on either clears the error immediately or after a few minutes of driving relatively straight. Hitting the cruise control while the 4x4 error is up also pops up another error stating that the cruise control has malfunctioned. This error also goes away upon restart.

I have the same thing happen with both my factory staggered performance tire/wheel setup as well as my squared winter tire/wheel setup. This is the last season for the PS2s on my summer setup, so I wonder if that might have something to do with it. However, they aren't abnormally worn.

Both my independent shop and the dealer were unable to find anything wrong in the past, and no error codes were stored. One of the problems I have is that the error usually disappears before I get to either shop. I also haven't been able to find anything in the Bentley Repair Manual.

I've heard that a faulty steering wheel angle sensor could be to blame. Any ideas? This is getting really annoying.

"1998: ....We're going to write it up any day now. . ...."

Now, hey man, I know ya been busy an what all, but uh..... 12 years?? :p

Kinda like one of the old jokes my dad's always liked telling:

A man decided to join a monastery; The head abbot explained that he would have to take a vow of silence, but every four years, the brothers would gather for a communal dinner, and each would be allowed to speak two words.

So, the man agreed, and joined the monastery. 4 years passed, and he didn't utter a word. Finally, they all gathered for the banquet and each man stood up and spoke their two words. When it got to be his turn he stood up and said: "Bed.. Hard.." and sat back down.

Another 4 years pass, he's been there 8 years, and there is another banquet. This time, he stands up and says: "Food... Lousy...", and sits back down.

4 more years go by, and the brothers are back together again for the next banquet. Now he's been there 12 years. When it becomes his turn, this time the man stands up and says: "I Quit!" and he walks out.

As he was gathering his things to leave, the head abbot stopped in to look in on the man and told him "You know, I could see this was coming, from the way you've been complaining lately."

Great to see ya @ O'Fest & thanks to you and the rallymeisters for a great O'Fest TSD!

My pickup date at the Welt is Monday, Oct 11th and plan to drop it off back in Munich on Saturday, Oct 16th, then fly back the next day. I was looking forward to staying longer but my girl friend can't make the trip.

I would like to see some of Northern Italy and the Mediterranean. Any suggestions on places to go and where to stay? I originally had in mind Lake Como, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. Not sure how much of that I can fit all that into 4 days. I have to be back in Munich by Noon on Saturday because HARMS closes a 2 pm. That leaves me with one last night in Munich for some brats, red sauerkraut and beer.

Lets start with a moderately priced hotel (e.g. Courtyard Marriott) convenient to the Welt.

Please join me in congratulating, Michael Washington on garnering the "Best overall performance at Oktoberfest". This is also known as, you guessed it, the "Michael Washington Award". Incorrect tabulation at O'fest handed me the win with 34 points, however, Michael was incorrectly scored and actually had 37 points, relegating me to 2nd with 34 points.

2002, E46, M3 Sedan, 6 Spd

I recently had the clutch replaced by a BMW dealer, after a failed pivot on the clutch fork caused the throwout bearing to bottom out and cause a severe grinding noise. It is possible that this was the original clutch, after 70K miles; If not it was an OEM clutch and pressure plate.
My replacement was complete, disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot.
Since completed, there is a vibration, sympathetic with the engine at 4000RPMs or more, when the clutch is depressed.
I can't figure out why this is happening, as it is all hydraulic, slave to clutch cylinder?????
Am I over sensitive, or does anybody have any ideas........Driving me a little nuts......

Thanks for any input.

European upgrade for base stereo, 2009 and later

I made the error of thinking that the base stereo would be about as good as the H-K system on my previous E46: bad thinking – and bad advice from the salesman. The fidelity of the base system is ok, but it doesn’t have much power (evidently an amp integrated with the head unit), but the worst problem from my standpoint is the absence of tweeters in the door behind the outside mirrors. As I’ve aged, my ability to discern sounds against noisy backgrounds – which is exactly what we experience in our cars at highway speeds – has degraded. Especially in the last few years this means that without tweeters up high, the sound from the door’s 4” speakers (which are not terribly good for the base system) is pretty muffled. Some people have upgraded their door speakers to those by BSW or others but that probably wouldn’t be enough – especially since there’s not enough power available to adequately drive them. And there’s no wiring or amp for the upper tweeter speakers, so I’d have to go whole hog for the amp plus the 10-speaker package, then figure out how to install the whole works.

So, I looked around some, and discovered that BMW actually makes an Alpine upgrade for its base system that brings it closer to the 10-speaker setups. Unfortunately, it’s only available in Europe, but there are ways: one online retailer, Schmiedmann in Denmark, will take our plastic quite willingly and ship to the US. The BMW part # is 65-41-0-445-684; cost was $419 ($30 shipping included, no tax, varies due to exchange rate). (There evidently is a different part 65-41-2-163-268 for a upgrade to 2010 models and later, with some slightly better wiring, but requires some playing with the computer/coding.)

This Alpine system consists of an Alpine PDA F200 4-channel 50w/channel amp (that goes in the trunk floor where there is space for amps), two tweeters for the upper door, two replacement upgrades for the 4” door speakers, and a wiring harness for the whole works, that also ties into the subs. You also have to order the door trim pieces that have tweeter cutouts in them. Part #s for the sedan are 51-33-7-171-201, and 51-33-7-171-202. They are $36.50 each + shipping from Bavarian Autosport; they were $51 each from the local dealer. There are also directions from BMW for installation: 65-41-0-445-684. A guy on e90post did a DIY, also one on bimmerfest. The BMW directions say 2.5 hours, but that’s definitely too low – you should double that estimate.

I had my local independent BMW shop install it, as I hate detailed work, hate being on my old knees, hate taking apart interior trim (finicky to get it back together just right), hate pulling the back seat, hate pulling carpet, and hated the idea of removing the front seats to get to the sub-woofer wiring to hook up the new amp.

This upgrade is designed only for base systems, but is a relatively easy and inexpensive upgrade for those of us that just want to be able to hear the music while we’re rolling. Note that there are no additions for the back-seat passengers, no upgraded speakers for the rear deck, and no DSP. It’s a very clean install except for the sub wirings, and because the source is BMW/Alpine it’s really original, if that’s important to you. Nice to have the little “Alpine” stickers on the tweeter housings.

My initial impressions are that it 1) adds brilliance to the highs, 2) adds presence to the mid-range, and 3) drives the subs enough that you can actually hear the bass drums and Adam Clayton’s bass. Much nicer, almost comparable to the HK in my ’01 330xi. It’s worth the $419 parts cost, but probably not worth having someone do it like I did. BSW seems to have a similar kit, priced a little higher – their website isn’t quite updated all the way to show the components in their system, last I checked (picture for base system upgrade shows 10 speakers, no amp.)

Seriously?!

I just had my 335i in for service recently, and was given a 135i loaner with the dual-clutch Getrag box. It knocked my socks off!

That transmission is 20 times better than the ZF-Auto box they offer on the 3 Series, and would have me seriously considering ditching my manual.

For some inane reason though, BMW don't offer it as an option on the 3 Series, except for the 335is and the M3. In Europe, the dual-clutch transmission is a build-to-order option on almost every vehicle - but I can't get it on a 335 or any other non M 3 Series that isn't the "is".

What gives?! Who else would like the dual-clutch option on a 3 series if given the chance?

I don't need or want the "is" and I can't afford an M3, but I'd pay for that transmission on a regular 335...if there was a choice!

Their finish, the team’s eighth trip to the podium in eight races so far this season, drops BMW and BMW Rahal-Letterman Racing to second in the GT manufacturers’ and team championships, just one point behind Porsche and Flying Lizard with one race to go.

The race, scheduled for 2 ¾ hours, was red flagged with 29 minutes remaining after GTC Porsche racer Luke Hines was hit by Johnny Cocker’s prototype. The Porsche crashed heavily, moving an Armco barrier. The ALMS officials determined that the extensive repairs required would have taken three hours, so the cars were restarted after sitting in the pits for almost an hour and paraded around the circuit behind the pace car to take the checkered flag.
Not long before the race was stopped, Tommy Milner was leading in the #92 M3, rebuilt after the Road America crash. The M3’s tires were going away, and the Porsche and the Ferrari got by just before Milner made a planned out-of-sequence stop. The red flag came out soon after he returned to the circuit.

The #90 M3 had crashed out just over an hour into the race in an incident that also involved the Robertson Racing Ford GT. The incident occurred after Dirk Müller had taken over from Joey Hand.

Bill Auberlen, racing with a broken rib sustained in the Road America crash (unknown to him until the Mosport weekend) said, "The team had to go straight home to Columbus [Ohio], build up a bare chassis in two days, then go straight to Mosport. We pitted out of sequence, which would have worked out really well had the race not been red-flagged. Because of the shortened race, we didn't get to battle, but we finished on the podium and we led a lot of the race. I want to thank the Rahal Letterman guys for all their hard work, and Dunlop Tires.”

The overall win went to the Porsche RS Spyder prototype of Klaus Graf/Romain Dumas.

The ALMS GT team, manufacturers’, and drivers’ titles will be decided at the Petit Le Mans enduro at Road Atlanta on October 2.—Brian S. Morgan, motorsports editor, bmwcca.org

Ed and Sandy Smith are automotive enthusiasts like us. And they are kind enough to invite all other enthusiasts to their farm for the third straight year. I went last year, and it was one of the best events I've been to. Here's what to expect:

An eclectic mix of cars from Acuras to Zondas

Friendly enthusiasts to hang out and talk cars with

Catered lunch

A beautiful, scenic drive to and from

Oh... and golf cart polo!

Last year's contingent of BMWs was about 6-8 strong, with everything from 1-Series to M-cars. Let's see if we can boost that number a bit this year. Ed is hoping to get 70+ cars this year.

Check out this thread for more information and pictures/videos from last year's gathering.

My wife has a 2006 Z4 3.0si. We love the car and I truly enjoy driving it when I'm not in my E30.

However, we have noticed cracks under the coating of the wood grain dash starting to appear. We have done nothing to cause it. I clean the car for her and its been kept in great condition. Her warranty is scheduled to expire in October. The car just passed the 30K mark. The car is in excellent condition except for a few paint chip touch ups. It just makes me sick to look at the dash and know its only goint to get worse in time.

Pictures attached. Its hard to see them in the photo. There are four cracks from 3 inches to 11 inches long. It reminds me of laquer cracking on paint when its applied too thick.

I'm wondering if this has been an issue in other Z-4s or if its just her car? Is it covered undered the factory warranty?

Well after several weeks of trying to sync up our schedules John in VA and I had the opportunity to link up on Saturday. It was a pleasure meeting him and talking BMWs, we must have chatted fro over an hour.

Anywho, after several discussions on the board about trunk liners, I now have one installed. Not sure if its correct (see photos). The liner has positons for 12 clips (same as door liner clips) and two smaller holes for the tool kit screws. Upon installing the liner, I could not figure out how to install it and keep the tool kit functional (aka allowing it to drop down upon opening it). The only way to keep the tool kit functional and allow it to fit into the liner was to install it with the two philips screws showing.

HOT TIP! By the way screwing in the clips is a royal pain in the arse. However, I figured out a trick/tip which I'm sure the factory guys never used. Screwing in the clips becomes really easy if you apply a very small amount of lube. I used virgin olive oil since I did not want to use anything with a petroleum base. It was pretty simple screwing them into place one they had a little lube. I also used a clean garage rag to increase my grip on the clips. If you use pliers you will simply crush the clips.

My fingers are still tender!

I hope this is correct. What do you think?

Five year anniversary of the night that changed my life. A Katrina survivor tells his story.

On August 28, 2005, I was in my old apartment at 3816 Ulloa Street, Apartment 1 (mine is the one that overlooks Tulane Avenue). I remember the day like it was yesterday. The sky was dark and blackened in broad daylight, and the wind was gusting strong. I had no idea I was in my apartment as a resident for the last time. I was a sheriff's deputy at the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office in the House of Detention building. I was experiencing a crisis of faith, as although I had been restored to God's church for nearly three years, my work schedule and my work environment was taking its toll on my spiritually. I hadn't been able to attend Sunday service or fellowship in three weeks, and the spiritually cynical and skeptical law enforcement environment was getting under my skin. I prayed to God that He give me some kind of sign that He was still with me, that He still loved me, and that His grace was still with me, because I honestly didn't feel I was measuring up in even a token fashion.

I brought only what could fit in my backpack as well as my pillow. The second floor of the House of Detention had been converted into a hurricane shelter for the deputies and their families. Once inside the building, no one was allowed to leave due to the danger from water and wind. None of us had any idea what was going to happen, nor that any of us would not see our homes again for months. When we were taking our shifts providing security on the detention floors three through ten, wind and water was blowing into the hallways. The higher rank supervisors walked down the hallways with shotguns warning the inmates that anyone caught in the hallways would be shot attempting to escape, per state law mandating the handling of escapes during a state emergency. We rotated in and out of our shifts for two days, rationing all food and water supplies. There were 169 civilians, 69 deputies, and around 700 inmates in that same building.

Unfortunately, what happened two days later is that the backup generators that were providing power to the building after the main power failed ran out of diesel fuel two days later. Worse, the diesel generators were at ground level and UNDERWATER, making it impossible to refuel them without flooding the backup generators with water! Whose bright idea was it to put backup generators on the GROUND LEVEL in an area KNOWN to being a FLOOD PLAIN?!!

At any rate, once the backup power died, we were completely out of power. No communications, no electronic controls, no power to the doors, no nothing! I was at my duty station on the sixth floor when I saw several of my fellow deputies running down the stairwell to the 2nd floor. My backup, a rookie female deputy (I had been on the job for two years), also ran down the stairs to the second floor. I went down to the first floor as well. The deputies were crowded around the asst. Warden, Captain Pittman, all yelling about how the inmates were panicking and rattling the bars, and that they were quitting, fearing for their lives. Captain Pittman told everyone that we could either turn in our badges, resign right there, and take our places with the other civilians, or go back to our stations and try to prevent escapes and a possible hostage situation from developing as a result. I was just as scared as those other deputies, but I felt a commitment to do the job I was assigned to do. So I asked one of the other deputies to escort me back to the sixth floor. My backup deputy had quit, so I had to man the sixth floor, with 120 screaming, panicking inmates, ALONE. it gets worse. They LOCKED me on the sixth floor and nobody knew where the key was! So I was stranded on the sixth floor with no weapon, no power, no communications, and no way to get help for 12.5 hours if something happened. The inmates started yelling threats, shouting that they hoped I had a weapon, because "I was going to need all six shots against all 120 of them." The inmates couldn't see me, so they couldn't tell if I was armed or not (i wasn't). Instead, I gathered four dry chemical fire extinguishers, a chair, and a broomstick, and told the inmates down each of the four hallways that if I found a single inmate out in that hallway, they'd find out what I had. Nobody called my bluff, things calmed down after I shared with the inmates what little information I knew about what was going on to de-escalate the situation. The next morning, I was relieved by my morning relief 12.5 hours later.

The rest you people already know. I like to think of it as my trial by fire, my 40 days in the wilderness, my 40 days in the fish story. It was a defining moment in my faith to trust God to carry me through and not give in to my fears. God worked a miracle in the regard that out of the 13 buildings that composed the Orleans Parish jail complex, my building was the only one with no fatalities and no escapes. Considering that the entire city was under 8 to 12 feet of water, we were all evacuated five days later on September 2. The inmates were evacuated to other state facilities, and the deputies and civilians were evacuated first to Houma, then to Baton Rouge.

By the way, please don't call me a Katrina "victim" or a "Katrina evacuee." It might pass to describe my situation in a generic way, but it doesn't do my faith experience justice. I prefer to think of myself as a Katrina survivor. It's what I am. I survived, not on my own strength, but by relying on God and doing the right thing during a very scary and spiritually challenging time in my life.

As long as we're talking about labels, I'm no hero either. The real heroes were the men and women who volunteered all over the country to rescue me and others from the folly of the leadership that didn't see fit to plan or evacuate properly for this historic disaster, as well as all of the brave volunteers who came after to help my fellow New Orleanians rebuild their homes and businesses.

I arrived in Dallas on September 17, 2005, where I have been to this very day. Thank you for sitting through my story, my family and friends, and may God bless you all.

The Ganassi Riley-BMW team secures the 2010 Grand-Am championship at Montreal

Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas in their Riley-BMW Daytona Prototype won the Grand-Am Montreal 200 on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, scoring a series record breaking eighth win of the season and securing the team title for Ganassi Racing.

Pruett led more than half of the race in the Dinan-BMW V8 powered prototype, warding off the challenge of the pole winning Gainsco Riley Chevrolet of Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty.
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2796 Pruett and Rojas won their eighth race of the season in Montreal. (Grand-Am photo) [/FLOATLEFT]
To secure the drivers’ title, Pruett and Rojas each have to drive thirty minutes in the season finale at Miller Motorsports Park in September. If only one of the two drives thirty minutes at Miller, that driver will win the title.

SunTrust Racing’s Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor, the Ganassi drivers’ closest competitors, can possibly tie them on points at Miller. But even if they do, Pruett and Rojas would win the title because the tiebreaker is the number of wins in the season.

Ryan Dalziel, who was second in points going into Montreal, did not get into the Starworks Riley-BMW during the race, as the car, with Mike Forest at the controls, exited after just eight laps with a broken ring and pinion.

Well, these things do happen. My shared community property now includes a Prius which replaced a Subaru Forester. The mileage is good, the hatch accommodates the prerequisite stand-up base and the dealership actually gave a good deal (a bit more than 10% off of MSRP, no destination charge and full-market value on the trade). And, the thing is pretty dawn quiet. In fact, it's so quiet, a state trooper had to tell me how fast I was driving when I was only 10-minutes into my first drive. The old Subaru made lots of noise on those grocery and hardware store runs.

We'll see how this goes. It's not bad, but it's also not inspiring.

The biggest issue to arise is that the golf cart is both newer and more valuable than the 5 or the 3 and, therefore, a member of the family feels that the golf cart should occupy a space in the garage vs the car port. It's not going to be happy situation.

Wish me well.

I caught rock to the windshield on vacation near Charleston, SC. I didn't let it ruin my travels however I dreaded dealing with my insurance company. I took the car into my local dealer just to ask about what to expect and ask for in a replacement. The local dealer stated use to use OEM glass and a recommended installer. I then contacted the insurance company and advised them of my wishes for OEM and the installer. They did their normal pitch for chip repair and after market glass. I held my ground and they meet all my wishes. My hat of to Allstate and the OEM replacement.

I bought my 2005 Z4 (2.5L, manual) last October with only 33K miles on it. Since then I've driven well over 15K very enjoyable miles. I use it as my daily driver here in North Texas. The top is down at any time the temp is over 45F but under 105F.

My only issue is that the internal rear view mirror appears to be an automatic dimming version but does not dim at all. Since I drive in an area of the country where pickup trucks and SUV's are very popular, their headlights shine right into my eyes at night on my way home from work.

There is a sensor on the upper trim right above the glass. Shining a light into the sensor has no effect on the mirror. I've read the owners manuals but have not found a solution.

Any helpful comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

This is the first time I am realizing that I have a red indicator next to my username on this site, because I have been 'naughty'...But, wait...I've paid my dues, I've provided detailed DIY files to other members, I have spent my time being helpful when I could...what is up ?

SO, then I investigate and realize that one member has labelled me rude, hateful, and unbecoming a cca member -- I'm guessing this is probably not because I spend my spare time on this site helping other members answer their questions, and searching through my own files for helpful links. Perhaps I should reconsider those efforts and spend my time instead writing complaints about the statements of other members that I find too hard to stomach. But, that would be unbecoming of a CCA member, counterproductive, rude, and perhaps, even hateful.

It is very common, in most arenas, that the complainers have the loudest voice -- their intensity on an issue is what drives them to spend the time to actually write a complaint. It seems to me that there is the same risk here on this site, with our current reputation system.

I am going to suggest that you don't list the name of the complainer next to the complaint on my user profile. I am also going to suggest that a moderator reaches out in the event of a complaint to 1) mediate any hard feelings 2)make involved parties aware of the reputation changes. That way, they can act accordingly , immediately.

Popular, affable "car guy" helped bring Mini to America

BMW of North America has announced that Jack Pitney, vice-president of marketing, was killed early on Thursday, August 26, in a tragic accident while on vacation at his farm. Pitney, 47, lived in Ridgewood with his wife, Quincy, and their five children, according to Tom Kowaleski, vice-president of corporate communications for BMW NA.[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2784Jack Pitney[/FLOATRIGHT]

"He was working on his tractor on his farm in Dutchess County [New York]," Kowaleski said. He had no further information.

Pitney was a well-known and much-liked figure in the auto industry. A former manager of public relations for Mazda, Pitney moved from head of BMW public relations to launch the company's successful Mini lineup of British-made small cars. As vice president of marketing at BMW, he launched new vehicles such as the small 1 Series and X3 sport activity vehicle.

In the early days of the new millennium, Pitney and a small team of BMW managers had convinced their superiors that the Mini could be sold for a profit in the difficult U.S. market. The move was a gamble for BMW, as it revived the Mini name as a fun British car that was popular in the 1960s. BMW put the Mini Cooper in a premium price class for such a small vehicle, but allowed young buyers to accessorize it with various options. It became wildly popular—and convinced other auto makers that they could sell small cars if they were fun to drive and had the features of larger cars.

Pitney was named general manager of the Mini brand in 2001 at the age of 38. He served as vice president and general manager of MINI from 2001 to 2005 as he launched the brand's reintroduction in this country. A popular film, The Italian Job, featured Minis as getaway cars during a heist.

Pitney joined BMW in 1995 as head of corporate communications; he had been a vice president at Hill and Knowlton in Los Angeles, heading the Mazda account. He also worked as vice president at GCI Group/Los Angeles, overseeing the launch of Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury car division. At BMW, he was supposed to assume the position of vice president for the Eastern Region on September 1, and be responsible for sales, marketing and dealer activities in the crucial New York metropolitan area.

Born in Stamford, Connecticut, he earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Occidental College.—Paul Duchene

Review: Forgestar F14 18" Wheels

My OEM M3 wheels were trashed by the previous owner. He must have destroyed the 3-stage finish with harsh cleaners, and had them refinished by what...

My OEM M3 wheels were trashed by the previous owner. He must have destroyed the 3-stage finish with harsh cleaners, and had them refinished by what looked like a 2-year old. Needless to say, it came down to spending a fortune to undo the damage (straightening, media blasting, and powder-coating), or just ponying up and replacing them altogether.

After weeks of deliberation with my wife, looking for a wheel that we both liked, looked appropriate on the car, and was affordable, we decided to buy a set of Forgestar F14 wheels. We learned that Forgestar was an up and coming company that had great wheels at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, my only choice of vendors was Modbargains.com. More on that later.

First, a bit about the wheels: They are manufactured using the flow-forming technique, which is supposedly what companies such as BBS and Enkei use for their non-forged wheels. And these types of wheels are used on race cars including F1 and Indy. The flow-forming process allows for a 1-piece wheel that shares properties with forged wheels such as strength and lightness, with the cost effectiveness of cast wheels. You can find all the gory details at Forgestar's website.

I decided to stick with 18" wheels, primarily because the roads in Massachusetts have been known to chew up and spit out nearly anything that drives on them. I figured a little extra rubber between the wheels and potholes would help save my new investment, teeth and spine. I did go 1" wider both front and back (9.5" and 10.5" respectively) to help fill out the wheel wells and add a little to the aggressive look. All Forgestar wheels are made to order, so the bolt pattern, offset, width and size are all pretty flexible. They manufactured mine to fit perfectly.

Overall, I've been happy with the wheels. I think they look great, fit well, compliment the car, and didn't break the bank. My cost was approximately $1200 for the set of four.

Now the downsides to my experience. I ordered these wheels in June of 2009. Modbargains.com was the only vendor (not sure if that's still the case). When I called, I was told that they only made the F14 in 19", but 18" was being added to the lineup. My order for 18" would be first in line after some wheels for race teams, and I should have them in a couple months. Modbargains took a deposit up front and wanted payment in full within a month or two.

What really happened was I made my payment in full and then got the runaround for 7 months! Modbargains told me there were various delays in manufacturing, delays due to SEMA, delays due to a ruined wheel that needed to be remade, and delays due to the color choice I made. Whatever the real reason was, I was steamed that I waited months to get something I had already paid for, and since I store the car in Winter, getting them in January was completely worthless to me.

Additionally, Modbargains cut me a "deal" on the wheels since I would be one of the first people to have them, as long as I posted reviews on all the forums I was a regular on. As it turns out, during my excruciatingly long wait, I got several emailed "sales" fliers from them where I could have had the same "deal" or better after having paid for them. After getting irate with them, they sent me a "pre-production" set of angel eyes to have (and write a review on) that didn't work! I'm reviewing the wheels now, on the CCA forums not because of their request, but because I like the wheels and wanted to share my thoughts. I don't even visit the other forums any longer.

In the end, I got the wheels, mounted some fresh rubber on them come spring, and installed them on the car. So far I've been happy with them. Bottom line: I think the wheels are great, but I was displeased with the vendor. Hopefully there are other buying options should you want a set of these wheels.

S1000 RR superbike gets traction control and ABS

BMW Motorrad USA has launched a promotion to help America’s servicemen and women ride more safely. Why? Because the number of accidents, injuries, and deaths among off-duty US military personnel has been an issue of great concern.

BMW Motorrad USA's performance riding training partner, the California Superbike School (CSS), provides training to the U.S. Air Force, Army and Marine Corps to help reduce the number of motorcycle accidents. And now, active-duty military personnel who buy a new BMW S1000 RR before December 31, 2010, will receive a free safety package, including Race ABS & Dynamic Traction Control worth $1,480.

The new BMW S1000 RR is not only the most powerful production bike on the market, it's also the safest, thanks to electronic rider aids Race ABS and Dynamic Traction Control. No other motorcycle offers this combination of safety features.[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2778[/FLOATRIGHT]

At the California Superbike School, Keith Code has taught 100,000 street riders and 15 U.S. Superbike Champions since CSS's inception in 1980. Today, CSS is found on four continents. This year, CSS switched from 600 Supersport motorcycles to the BMW S1000 RR. Despite having 80 more horsepower, the number of student crashes on the track has declined by 60% thanks to the safety features of the BMW S1000 RR.

According to Code, so far this year, over 900 CSS students have ridden more than 100,000 track miles at eight tracks, in all types of weather conditions, on BMW S1000 RRs fitted with Dynamic Traction Control and Race ABS systems. “Compared to the 600s we’ve used for the past 30 years, amounting to twelve million miles of track training with over 125,000 students at 106 tracks around the world, our crash ratio has reduced by 60%,” observed Code. “Last year, we had an average of 1.2 crashes per school day. This year, so far, crashes are down to 0.3 per day.”

The S1000 RR, weighing only 404 lbs and delivering a massive 193 hp, is one of the most potent, sophisticated and lightest sport bikes ever produced. It's the most powerful production 1,000-cc sport bike in the world and has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of only $13,800.—Paul Duchene

Every Sunday morning, automotive and motorcycle enthusiasts gather at the Starbucks in Glastonbury CT. The event is organized by a local member of FerrariChat.com, but is open to anyone and everyone who is interested and behaves maturely.

I try to make it about once a month or so. The cars in attendance are often Ferraris (old and new), Porsches of all ages, BMWs, and an eclectic mix of nearly everything else! I've seen classic American, classic Alfa Romeo, a GTR, Lambo Countach, a large contingent of Ducatis and more. Typical weekly turnout is 10-30 vehicles.
This group of people is friendly and snobbery is not allowed. Shenanigans won't be tolerated, and mutual respect is expected from all. If that is your cup of tea, along with the desire to see some very interesting cars and speak with their owners, I highly encourage you to attend.

Hello CCA members. I'm Eric from Agawam MA, and I'm addicted to German cars!

My wife and I currently have a (lightly modified) VW Passat Wagon with a 5-speed manual and 1.8 liter turbo engine. You just can't beat the fun and practicality that a wagon provides! Our fun car is a 2002 M3 convertible we picked up used a few years back.

With the exception of one Pontiac (yeah, yeah... I think the decision to buy that car was planted in my head by aliens), the rest of the 10 cars I've owned since getting my license have been German brands. Hence the screen name "Deutsch Marques"... a play on words for German cars and Germany's pre-Euro money.

I've been an active member of various automotive forums and clubs for the past 10-12 years or so. And a member of the CCA since my first BMW, a 2003 330i that I bought new. However, I'm just now coming to the CCA forums. I hope to avoid the nonsense and immaturity that plagues too many other forums, and why I have given up on most of them lately.

I have hosted and attended many garage days, socials, and other club events over the years. Including organizing a charitable event in 2002 where we raised money for the Shriners. Over 60 VW Passats attended that one event, which was a terrific success. I hope to be able to do more events with the CCA and my local CT Valley Chapter, and looking forward to meeting some fellow CCA members.

The Tire Rack BMW CCA Club Racing series stock classes will change in 2011

The Tire Rack BMW CCA Club Racing has announced a revision of the rules...

The Tire Rack BMW CCA Club Racing series stock classes will change in 2011

The Tire Rack BMW CCA Club Racing has announced a revision of the rules for its stock classes. The new rules will take effect in 2011.

In a release on the changes, Club Racing chairman Gary Davis says that “the rules are intended to revitalize our outdated Stock class.” Entries in the stock classes have declined in recent seasons. The declines have been most notable in the E30 M3-dominated J-Stock class, once one of the largest classes in the series.
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2756 The rules for stock-class cars like Dave Allaway's E30 M3 will change in 2011. (Brian Morgan photo) [/FLOATLEFT]
Davis goes on to say, “I created a Rules Task Force, consisting of James Clay, Billy Maher, Scott Smith, Brett Strom, and myself – a geographically diverse group of guys who are all intimately familiar with BMWs across a wide range of models, detailed technical aspects of these cars, and the industry of performance cars and parts as a whole. Over a span of several months, these individuals worked to produce a unanimously accepted outline for an updated rules set, which will more accurately reflect the entry level class in our racing, as well as provide a more level to transition between classes and build a car that more competitively races in both our race series as well as with other groups.”

Weight, suspension, and diff specs will change

Highlights of the changes described in the release are:

“Name – This is no longer a “Stock” car, although it does represent a typical entry-level expenditure with a stock appearance. We suggest the name be changed to Super Stock (SS), Limited (L), or similar.

“Weight – Car weights will reflect existing Prepared weights, with similar preparation. Removing weight is initially the cheapest way to go faster and typical track-prepped cars are stripped to this level. This also aid in having a fun car which is more capable in crossover classes with other organizations.

“Engine – Pure stock engine as currently listed with no internal modifications. Stock exhaust manifolds retained with catalysts removal allowed on newer model cars.

“Suspension – Allow as Prepared, including height-adjustable coilovers and camber plates. Non-remote reservoir, double adjustable dampers are already allowed and existing in Stock class.

“Differential – Gear changes are allowed to increase competitive ability of poorly-geared models and allow factory-based limited slip units to allow newer models without factory limited slip a non-open option.

“Body – No rear spoilers or front splitters unless equipped as factory standard (not dealer-installed options)."

Details of the rules that are described as “smaller items (that are) generally a matter of housekeeping to ensure our rules are stable and consistent for years to come,” will be posted on the Club Racing site, www.bmwccaclubracing.com, as soon as they are completed and approved. Current rules and other information on the series are posted on the site. —Brian S. Morgan, motorsports editor, bmwcca.org

I would appreciate hearing from members regarding their experiences with either dealers or independent repair shops convenient to Westchester County in NY. Both my 3 series (E46 and E91 purchased CPO) have been service by Westchester BMW, now Ray Catena BMW, primarily because they were still until the "free" maintenance and CPO warranty.

The covered maintenance has ended, but both cars are still under the CPO warranty. I am planning to keep both since they are low milage and I follow Mike Miller's old school maintenance recommendations. This is the second time my 325xiT was returned from service with a damaged front bumper. Fortunately, they take digitial photo's upon check in and they have reluctantly agreed to perform the body repairs at no cost to me. Even so, it's frustrating and aggrevating to have to deal with this.

Once I get the vehicle back from this last incident I plan to go elsewhere. Unfortunately, I have not heard good things about Greenwich BMW's service facility in Port Chester either. Any recommendations are welcome.

Hey everybody,

As a new member of BMW CCA (as in this year), this is my first time using these forums so bear with me on this first run. I was hoping if any fellow members could provide me insight on this issue:

I drive a 2008 E90 328i with sport package and manual transmission, and about 2 weeks ago noticed a loud rattling coming from the rear of the interior of the car. Now at first I thought it might have been something loose in the trunk, however it turned out it was coming from inside the rear portion of the headliner. The rattling only seemed to be occurring when the sunroof was open. I brought it into my dealer (Ray Catena BMW of Westchester) and they mentioned that some type of plastic retaining clip had broken (the service advisor had a thick accent which I could not quite understand) and that the cassette needed replacement. The car has been with them 7 days (as of this Tuesday 8/24/10) because the part was on backorder. Can anybody enlighten me as to what this is and if this problem has occurred on any other E90s?

I hate to be a drama queen, but I am waivering on my choice of interior and would like some feedback.

I just ordered a Titanium Silver 335is coupe for European Delivery. I really like the Saddle Brown leather but my girlfriend talked me out, claiming that the color combination is a "stretch." She favors the Coral Red but thinks that even Black is preferable to the Saddle Brown. To be on the safe side, I ordered Black leather even though it has no "pop."

I've probably looked at 50 Titanium Silver BMWs but have never seen one with Saddle Brown interior. Has anyone out there seen this combination and, if so, what is your impression?

I know the Coral Red "pops" but question whether the color will become annoying over time. I have heard people say they regret getting the color.

Saddle Brown certainly "pops" with Black, Red, Monaco Blue and White. It probably looks good with Space Gray as well. But Titanium?

I need help. I still have time to change my order.

Just got our first BMW car last month, a used 2010 128i with less than 3K on it. What a hoot. Just love driving the car, well when my wife will let me have the keys! If I am not out enjoying the 128i, then most likely I am out enjoying one of my BMW motorcycle. Got my fist BMW motorcycle in 2005, figured I might as well start with the older half of the family first. Have had such a good time on two wheels figured I shoudl try the four wheel BMW experience. Something tells me there won't be any other brand of car in the garage for a long time.

Hand and Müller score BMW Rahal Letterman Racing's first win of the season

Joey Hand and Dirk Müller piloted their BMW Rahal Letterman Racing M3 to a convincing GT class win in the American Le Mans Series race at Road America. It was the team’s first class win of the season, its seventh straight podium finish, and a reprise of its 2009 ALMS win on the historic Wisconsin circuit.

Hand, who had qualified the #90 M3 fourth, took the lead early in the race, demonstrating that the M3 could outrun the rest of the cars in the competitive GT class. The car fell back as the pack was shuffled during pit stops and yellow flag periods, but when the track went green with about an hour left in the race, Müller took the lead from the Flying Lizard Porsche of Patrick Long/Jörg Bergmeister and motored away, holding onto a lead that varied from two to four seconds for the balance of the race. In the end, the M3 won, the Porsche was second, and the Corvette of Oliver Gavin/Olivier Beretta finished third. You can watch a post-race interview with Hand and Müller here.
The day ended early for the #92 M3 of Bill Auberlen/Tommy Milner. Just twenty minutes into the race Auberlen was taken out when he was hit from the rear after he was caught behind a slowing LMPC prototype. The M3 went into a concrete barrier at high speed. Auberlen emerged without injury, but the car sustained damage that took it out of the race. The crew of #92 was on its way back to the shop before the race ended to repair the car in time for Friday practice at Mosport.
With just next weekend’s race at Mosport and the October 2 Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta left in the season, BMW leads the manufacturers’ championship, while Hand and Muller are tied for second in drivers’ points with Ferrari’s Gianmaria Bruni and Jaime Melo. Porsche’s Long and Bergmeister lead the drivers’ championship. Auberlen and his co-driver Tommy Milner, who did not get into the car during the Road America race, are fourth in drivers’ points.—Brian S. Morgan, motorsports editor, bmwcca.org

I've been searching through the various airline schedules and hope to use frequent flier points to pay for the trip. Clearly, Lufthansa has the best schedules between Washington DC and Munich but I have very few points on that airline and can't transfer any in because Lufthansa is not a member of AMEX membership rewards. The next best schedule is with USAIR through Philadelphia and they tell me I can upgrade to Business Class going East and stay in Coach on the return. The last option is Continental through Newark.

Anyone have any experience flying either of these two US carriers over the Atlantic?

Hello!

We just purchased a 2006 325xi as my wife's main car. She really loves the car, so much so that her Cadillac CTS is rarely missed. Not a trivial thing!

We have a driveway full of cars, all of which I maintain. This BMW has me puzzled about a few things, so I'm hoping that someone out there will be wiling to get us going in the right direction.

First, when the car is first stated, we get a red "service" indicator. Going through the menus, I see a "car on a lift" graphic in red that indicates overdue. All of the sub-indicators are current, though. What is it trying to tell me?

Next, the service engine soon light will come on for a day or so every now and then, then go out. Are these cars more sensitive to fuel variations / temp, etc than less engineered cars? This leads to...

Third, it's clear that I'm going to need a code reader / reset tool. Near as I can tell, the Peake units are nice but won't reset the CBS system in this car. It looks like the Bavarian unit is the best overall choice, but at $287 would like to solicit others' experiences.

Fourth, we live near Wichita, KS. We use Eurotech for the other cars for repairs with good results. There is a Bimmer only shop in town that has a good reputation. The dealer in Wichita does not have a good rep. If anyone out there has any experiences that would be helpful.

Finally, I used to live in Germany and understand their pragmatic approach to everything, but no dipstick?!? How is that helpful?

All kidding aside, I'm really pleased with this club and am always happy to be among car people.

Regards,

Frank White

I have tried moving the selector, Switching the ignition on and off several times, nothing. Any ideas or similar experiences? Any help is appreciated. Also, anyone know of experienced BMW techs in the Columbia S.C. area, that's where my baby is stuck

hello folks....first post (but long time lurker and APPRECIATIVE!!!)....
i just came from my mech (whom i trust implicitly....he has been VERY trustworthy and e46 knowledgable) and i find i am in desperate need of BOTH outer and inner CV joints at a mere 78,000miles....both of us are kind of amazed. he figured, even as an AWD vehicle, that i should have gone to somehwere around 100-150,000 miles! anyone else had this experience with a their 04/05 AWD wagons?
i should include here that i also have a 2000 328ci with as many miles and all i've had issue with is a control arm. mind you, i am the original owner of THAT car and the 04 xiT was a CPO bimmer......hmmmmmmm.....
your input and tales of woe (hopefully not TOO much woe! :-)) will be helpful.
be blessed....

This comes to us from our friends in the White Mountain Chapter. It is going to be a beautiful day to walk amoung the exotics of the North East:

Each year the Dodge Viper Club hosts the Northeast Exotic Car Show to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the White Mountain Chapter joins in to help this worthwhile cause. They have raised over $10,000 in past years and hope to exceed that this year. This premier event is held on the beautiful grounds of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Merrimack, New Hampshire. Any car lover will enjoy a gathering of this caliber, showing numerous exotic cars including BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Lotus, Dodge, and many others.

Admittance for the public runs from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is free. Donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation are appreciated. Vehicles may be entered into the show for $20 (payable day of the show between 8:30 and 10:00). Dozen of marques will be represented and each group will have a dedicated parking area. For BMWs we already have a prime paddock staked out on the lawn where we can display as may cars as we can muster. We would love to out number the hosting Viper club this year and encourage all club members to register. Over the years we've shown X5s, M1s, 740s and everything in between. If it has a roundel it belongs on the lawn. All attendees may come and go as they like during the show. There is no lock down of the show cars.

The next Exotic Car Show is
Saturday August 21st, 2010 - 8:30am
Held at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Merrimack, NH. Rain Date is Sat. Aug. 28

Youngsters sprawl on legendary classic; purists shocked

When BMW NA needs something from the enthusiasts, they call Frank Patek, the executive director of the BMW Car Club of America. And this time they wanted to borrow something. . . vintage. Well, classic. Something iconically BMW, but not too, you know, old.[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2744
Hey! Get your butts off the car!
[/FLOATRIGHT]
And it had to be a convertible.

So Frank wasted no time in calling Carl Nelson of La Jolla Independent, a man of many resources, and putting Nelson in touch with the production company intent on producing a music video featuring

a young though amply endowed singer named Katy Perry, and

something in a BMW that shouted Youth! Joy! Adventure!

Which obviously calls for a Baur convertible, does it not? “Sure,” said Nelson. “What color would you like?”

Color? We have a choice of colors?!

Yes, actually; Nelson offered a choice of white, black, silver, purple. . . so the video people took the white one.

The Baur convertible is a rather rare model on the BMW pantheon. “It was ordered by a guy in the Strategic Air Command back in 1970,” says Nelson. “In those days, you could specify a convertible, but few ever did. The delivery process took awhile; apparently the cars were built in Munich, then put on a train to Stuttgart, where Baur did the conversion, then shipped back to Munich.”

The result was one of the most desirable of the 1600-2002 BMW generation. “I saw the car in 1973 in Tacoma,” says Nelson, “and when I drove it, I knew I had to have it.”

Watching the video, you may assume that none of the gen-Y hardbodies dancing around the car have any regard for its history—they lean on it! They lie on it!—but you may very well enjoy the driving scenes, shot somewhere around Santa Barbara, in which Ms. Perry and her studmuffin are harassed by a grungy American Iron convertible populated by what appear to be offspring of the Village People.

You can view the video here. . . but if you haven’t kept up with the customs and mores of the young people of today, perhaps you’d better sit down while you watch it.—Satch Carlson

Words are inadequate to describe the array of pristine BMW engineering. Where else could you see an entire row of 3.0CS coupes? Or the very first E21 3 Series turbocharged by Steve Dinan? Or Alpinas never officially imported into the U.S.? Should we mention the number of 2002 Turbos?
Indeed, thanks to the support of South County BMW in San Diego and WinCrest Transport in the Bay Area, a substantial portion of the Jim Smith collection was on hand to illustrate [FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2742Jim and Mary True drove their 1934 BMW 309 from San Jose.[/FLOATLEFT]the history of BMW, along with Jim and Mary True in their 1934 BMW 309—yes, they drove it from San Jose—and Jerry and Diane Dotson with a 1938 327 cabriolet. Hello fellow members, I just wanted to introduce myself to all. I just became a CCA member, though I have owned my bimmer for a little over 2 years now. I own, at the present time, a 1996 318is black/tan. Yes, it's a 4 cyl but it's paid for. I love my gas mileage.

Prior to owning this, I drove nothing but Honda's. Since owning my BMW, I cannot even look at anything else. I spend countless hours researching fixes for issues that come up so I can keep it in tip top shape. Other than rear wheel bearing and new tires, all maintenance has been performed by me. I love working on it, but more love driving it.

I look forward to speaking with each and all in the furture. I'll post some pics in about a week when wife returns from business trip. She has our camera.

Hi,
Just bought an M coupe S54. It is extremely clean, low-mileage, and unmodified. These cars are anticipated to have collector value in the future, and I don't want to subvert that.

I drive swiftly, and my daily driver has a custom-installed Laser/Radar detector under the hood.

Is a non-drivetrain addition like this detrimental to the collector value? I have no idea about such things. Just looking for some opinions. Thanks, all.

I'm getting ready to order a 335is and live in Washington DC where we get weather in the 20s and snow a few times each year (last year being an extreme exception with 40 inches twice). I really don't want to have to switch back and forth to snow tires.

People have condemned all-season tires on this website but just how bad are the new ultra high performance all-seasons, such as the new Pirelli PZero Nero or the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus, relative to a really good summer performance tire?

I plan to move next year to the San Francisco Bay Area where a summer tire will be good year-around, but even there one can encounter cold weather and snow in the Sierras.

Would it be sacrilege to put all-seasons on a 335is?

I just got a new 335d as a loaner (had 17 miles on it). Whoa....Wow...Holy ****... When you press firmly on the gas, oops, diesel pedal, there's this barely perceptable turbo lag and then it PLANTS you FIRMLY and DEEPLY in your seat. Its just not the same feel as a gasoline engine, and I've driven the x35i/x35is; that diesel torque is a whole new experience. I'm used to BMWs, esp., ones that I'm not used to driving, surprising me by hitting 90 before I realize it, but this growling monster went from 60 to 100 in what seemed like less that 75ft, all the while pulling for more. The engine sound/exhaust tone is certainly different from gas, but its interestingly different; throaty, growly, almost intimidating...on a 4-door sedan of all things. Mileage was around 37mpg, though I'm sure it would have been higher if I hadn't been speeding up/slowing down. In our area, diesel and premium gas are about the same price now. You have to get used to a much lower redline, but who cares!!! The Conti run-flats with this suspension are nice (not as good as the Michelin PS2 ZPs on my Roadster). What a great car!!!

Freude (und mehr Freude) am Fahren...

Hi Frank,

Just wanted to comment quickly on the quality of the CCA merchandise available: in my opinion, I feel that the quality is sub-par when compared to the image/quality of the cars themselves. For example, I bought one of the key chains and was quite dissapointed with the overall quality. It would be great to have a real steel + enamel version where we could engrave our CCA number and with a text reading: If found, please return to BMW CCA....

Hope to see other ideas from fellow members here.

Cheers!

e46 323i Control Arm Replacement

After heading in to get an alignment, I was told I need to replace the lower control arms, and get a bushing kit and have that replaced as well. After labor and parts, the total came to over $1000 (Les Schwab)

So, I did some research, and I found this kit online: ECS Tuning Rebuild Kit

I am mechanically inclined enough to be able to get this taken care of in my own garage. My first question is has anybody had any experience with this? (Project or kit specifically)

Secondly, I have recently noticed a pretty drastic hum (for lack of better noise description) that I can hear from inside the cabin, but I cannot hear it over the wind noise whilst driving down the road. I have isolated it to a wheel issue because when I clutch in and let the RPMs drop, the noise stays constant, and only varies based on vehicle speed. Is it potentially the tire from being out of alignment so terribly? When driving in a straight line, it feels as if the car is plowing with the front end (bit sluggish based on previous experience).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Consumer Reports sees value in Street Survival schools

Teenagers are four times as likely to crash than older drivers; each day, about nine teenagers between sixteen and nineteen years old die from motor-vehicle injuries. Those statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should be enough for you to send your teens to school to learn to be better drivers.

But “drivers' ed” usually refers to a program that teaches young drivers the rules of the road and how to operate a car. That’s just the start or real skill-building, however. Teens need to be aware of other drivers, and learn how to avoid accidents.

To evaluate the value of practical instruction, Consumer Reports sent four teenagers through a school and evaluated their driving skills before and after the instruction. The course selected was the nationally available Street Survival course, a joint venture of the Tire Rack, the BMW Car Club of America Foundation, and SCCA. The program costs $75 for a full day of instruction.[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2709Teaching teens some real driving skills is best done before they establish too many bad habits.[/FLOATRIGHT]

There are other courses across the country that offer similar training, such as the Driver’s Edge and the New Driver Car Control Clinic. Costs range from free to about $400. Most include instruction in a classroom, and driving exercises using the teenager’s own vehicle.

The four students had from six months to three years of driving experience, and three had attended private driving schools but had no experience with car-control training. Initial evaluation of their skills took place at Consumer Reports’ test track. Each student drove around a dry skid pad and through an autocross. The result: Two female students drove around the skid pad well below their cars’ limits, and appeared a bit frightened, while the two male students were both able to squeal the tires. On the autocross, all drivers drove rather slowly, and only one kept both hands on the wheel. Still, some got into heavy understeer by misjudging corners.

Then, during a full day of instruction, the teens drove in their own cars with trained instructors riding with them. The students practiced several dynamic maneuvers, including braking around a corner, lane changes, wet and dry figure eights, and a skidpad session where the instructor would provoke oversteer by pulling the parking brake.

The teens said that learning to cure oversteer was the most useful—and the most challenging—skill. On the other hand, threshold braking was not nearly as useful, since all cars had anti-lock brakes; for cars equipped with ABS, your best bet is to slam the brakes hard for the shortest stop.

The students also received classroom instruction that ranged from lessons on defensive-driving techniques to demonstrations of how to set the best driving position. Each student received a handbook for both them and their parents.

In a rerun at the track after the course, all four students were able to get their tires to squeal. On the autocross course, they were more confident, and all but one used both hands at all times. Each teen appeared more confident, and all agreed that the course would be best suited to drivers as young as possible—before they establish bad habits. Some also felt that they were already such seasoned drivers that the course was unnecessary, despite the fact they had improved after the course. All felt more confident in their abilities, and would recommend the course to their friends.

Statistics support the value of such defensive-driving courses. According to a recent study by Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, graduates from a teen defensive-driving school had cumulative crash rates 77% lower than the general fifteen-to-nineteen-year-old population.—Paul Duchene

Billions in 2010, up from mere millions in 2009

BMW's second-quarter results have produced a stunning net profit, some seven times stronger than anticipated. If the income and profit numbers were written as strings of zeros, this story would look like computer code.

BMW spokesmen said that net profit climbed to €834,000,000 ($1,100,000,000) from €121,000,000 in the same period a year earlier. Dow Jones analysts had projected a slightly more modest figure of €674,000,000. The fall of the euro has raised the value of dollar-denomination sales.

"The evident market recovery since the beginning of the year continued to gain pace during the second quarter 2010," said BMW, with practically British understatement.

The group delivered 380,412 BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce vehicles in the second quarter, a gain of 12.5%, and posted an 18.3% jump in sales to €15,348,000,000. Operating earnings before interest and tax soared to €1,717,000,000 from just €169,000,000 in an extremely weak second quarter in 2009. For the first six months of 2010, BMW swung from a loss of €31,000,000 in the first half of 2009 to a profit of €1,158,000,000.

Luxury-car makers have seen a complete turnaround this year, with emerging countries like China setting records. Looking ahead to the rest of 2010, BMW anticipates a unit-sales gain of around 10% to more than 1,400,000 vehicles and profit margins on core operations expected to be more than 5% for the automobiles segment. That is expected to climb to 8%-10% by 2012.

BMW motorcycles also did well, despite unfavorable market conditions, with a 21.6% rise in sales to 36,175 units, while the financial services division sold 3% more contracts.—Paul Duchene
