My forth BMW...love the 550i Spt...would not change a thing! My wife on the other hand would prefer to sacrifice a little handling for comfort. I read an article that stated tires contribute 70% to the ride...can we go from the current 245/35/19s and 275/30/19s to a deeper sidewall ratio (245/40 and 275/35 respectively) without too much compromise? The dimensional variation between tire brands leads one to assume there is enough tolerance concerning fitment. Any recommendations based on actual experience or expertise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Numbers encouraging in all markets

BMW's auto earnings fell sharply in 2009, thanks to a worldwide slump. Nevertheless, through efficiency and a more stable market, the automobile division showed a fourth-quarter profit of €93,000,000. For the full year, auto earnings came up short by €265,000,000 (as opposed to €690,000,000 profit in 2008). Those figures translated to a loss before tax of €588,000,000 (compared to a pre-tax profit of €318,000,000 in 2008. Revenues fell to €43,737,000,000 from €48,782,000,000 in 2008.

But the numbers are still impressive: Overall, the BMW Group sold 1,286,310 BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce vehicles in 2009—down 10.4% from 2008. This performance enabled BMW to increase its market share in its segment, staying #1 among the world's premium carmakers, as previously announced.

Worldwide, BMW sold 1,068,770 cars in 2009 (down 11.1% from 2008's 1,202,239 units), but that was still good enough for the brand to stay ahead of its competitors. And there were some success stories: BMW 7 Series sales jumped 35.7% to 52,680 units, while the BMW X6 managed a 56.8 gain, with 41,667 units delivered. BMW's Z4 sports car climbed 26.4% to 22,761 units, proving some people were still having fun.

German picture even brighter

In Germany, the picture was proportionally brighter, with 7 Series sales rising 74.8% to 7,439 units and the X6 rising 51% to sell 4,940 vehicles. Even though X5 sales dipped 31.9% to 10,933, that was still enough to keep all three models in the lead in their segments. Since their launches at the end of October 2009 up to the end of the year, 8,499 BMW X1s were sold, and 3,052 5 Series GTs found new homes worldwide.

Mini sales holding steady

The Mini brand sold 216,538 units worldwide in 2009, a modest dip of only 6.8% from 2008's 232,425 units. The model mix remained at a high level: More than half of the brand’s customers (53.6%) opted for the Mini Cooper, with 26.2% selecting the Mini Cooper S and 20.2% the Mini One.

The rich are hanging tough

Rolls-Royce still topped 1,000 cars in a down economy, selling 1,002 motor cars, down 17% from 2008's 1,212 units. The brand remains the clear leader in the ultra-luxury segment, and the new Rolls-Royce Ghost made a good start, with 167 vehicles handed over to customers in December.

Fast boat to China

The BMW Group grew strongly in 2009 in the emerging markets of China, with sales rising 37.5% to 90,536 units. Brazil sales jumped 118.8% to 6,398 and India sales rose 24.2% to 3,619 units. These were all new sales records in these markets.

Still pleasing the home crowd

Overall, Germany was the largest single market for the company in 2009 for its BMW and Mini cars, with a total of 258,012 units (off 9.4% from 2008's 284,786). With 33,517 cars handed over to customers, the Mini brand recorded its most successful year in Germany to date. The BMW Group plans to increase sales in the German market during 2010 as economies rebound.

Best performer in America

In the USA, the BMW Group sold 241,727 vehicles, down 20.3% from 2008's 303,190 units. However, the BMW brand, with 196,502 units sold, remained the best-performing European premium-car brand in the USA. The BMW Group forecasts that sales will increase in the U.S. market this year.—Paul Duchene

As a new owner of a 335d, I thought that it would be useful for other BMW Diesel owners have a location to exchange information.

To that point, I have also requested that the Puget Sound Chapter of PAC Region permit the introduction of a Diesel SIG. We are in the process of arranging our first meeting and activities, to include visiting a local dealership to meet with Service Representatives/ Mechanics for Q&A session.

I anticipate that with more and more Diesel owners coming on board, it will be very helpful to exchange useful Diesel experiences and information.

BMW iPod Adapter Quirks

I just took delivery of a 2010 335i that has the iPod adapter (no iDrive). The adapter works fine. I can see the iPod on the radio display. However, I have discovered some quirks with this setup. First, when I select iPod from the Audio memo, the iPod immediately starts playing whatever track it was left on the last time iPod was selected. There doesn’t appear to be any way to pause or stop the playback other than by either switching to another audio source or shutting the radio off. Second, It seems that only music content on the iPod can be played back. Podcasts cannot be directly accessed from the radio display. The workaround I use is to create a playlist containing the podcasts I want to listen to, but this is a nuisance. Lastly, when I look at the iPod under the center armrest cover, it is always on, even when the car’s ignition is turned off. I assume this means the iPod is always being charged by the car whether the ignition is on or off. This is okay for car use, but continually maintaining full charge will not be good for battery life when the iPod is removed from the car.

Dirk Müller took the GT2 pole for the 12 Hours of Sebring in his #90 BMW Rahal-Letterman Racing E92 M3. His 2:00.782 qualifying lap, set early in the qualifying session, was a new record for the class. He qualified the M3 that he will share in the race with Joey Hand and Andy Priaulx ahead of two Porsches, the Flying Lizard entry of Bergmeister/Long/Lieb and the Falken Tire car of Sellers/Henzler/Pilet.

But after the dust had settled on the qualifying session, according to BMW NA, "a mechanical issue caused a technical infraction, and the car was moved to the back of the GT2 pack." BMW NA notes that the mechanical issue has been corrected. (Added Saturday morning: The car failed a stall test, which is literally stalling the engine by restricting air flow to ensure that the right amount of air is getting through. A loose screw in the intake plenum allowed in just enough extra air to lead to a test failure).
(Brian Morgan photo) [/FLOATLEFT]
The two BMWs were the fastest cars in Thursday practice, but in Friday qualifying #92, the car of Bill Auberlen/Tommy Milner/Dirk Werner, lagged behind #90, qualifying eighth with Auberlen at the controls. His 2:01.922 was still above the old class record set by Jaime Melo in a Ferrari 430 GT. With the #90 car moved to the rear, #92 moves up to seventh on the grid. Müller's lap record has been expunged from the grid sheet; it has been replaced by the 2:01.50 of Bergmeister, which still beats Melo's record.

The 2010 edition of the 12 Hours of Sebring marks the 35th anniversary of BMW NA, and the 35th anniversary of BMW’s first win at Sebring in a 3.5CSL shared by Brian Redman, Allan Moffat, Hans Stuck, and Sam Posey. This year’s race takes the green flag at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, with live coverage on Speed TV.—Brian S. Morgan, motorsports editor, bmwcca.org.

Hey Gang,

I drive alot. 100+ miles per day easy. I really need my Sirius working. I have a CPO X3 with 70K miles on it. My sat likes to fade in and out when I am listenig to it. This is regardless of where I am at. So its not the geography. It also happens when ever I change stations. It takes a while for the station to come in. this is not the case on my other two cars. In fact the XM on my FLEX runs perfect all the time even under bridges. I had this same problem 50,000 miles ago and the dealer repced the head unit. So I took the car back to a different dealer, and they immed went into the its not covered under warranty blah blah speel before hearing my issues. I really hate BMW dealers here in S. Calif. I wish there was a good one.

Anyway, anyone have a similar issue. Is there a DIY fix? I do not have the navagation and I have sport and premium package.

Thanks,
Michael

I have to go on a 200 mile each way highway trip during this period. What is the best way to meet this requirement? Use cruise control and change speed every X number of miles by X mph? If so, what would you recommend?

Question:

On my 540i 2001 6 spd, I notice a pulley on the serp. belt between the Alt and PS pump. This pulley is without grooves and rides gently on the back on the serp belt.

? what is purpose here ? Seems like a strange place for a idler pulley as the length of serp belt run is rather short compared to other pulley to pulley distances on the same belt or even the AC belt.

Almost no deflection of the belt with the pulley tension, so the exact reason is not clear to me.

? Any thoughts on this mystery ?

thanks

Tablecloth-yanking feat not computer-generated

In this day and age, our jaded, cynical nature makes us skeptical. So when BMW produced a marvelous film of “the old tablecloth trick”—you know, when you yank the tablecloth out from under you mother-in-law’s finest china and it stays in place—using a BMW S1000 RR to do the yanking. . . and a tablecloth about twenty feet long. . . with an entire china closet worth of dishes laid out like a Google break room. . . well, there were some suspicions. (Click here to watch the video). [FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2254[/FLOATRIGHT]

BMW's biggest-ever YouTube film has attracted more than 1,700,000 hits so far—plus a lot of comment about whether it was real or computer-generated. What exactly is the issue here? Well, in the film, the 193-horsepower S1000 RR is cranked wide open, and on its way to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, it snatches the tablecloth from under all the settings—without disturbing a single piece. Yup, silverware, dishes, glasses, candelabras, vases of flowers—it could have been a wedding (something to consider, if you’re planning one).

The Internet crowd—you know, the guys who live with their parents and know absolutely everything—were quick to call BS. But insiders at BMW NA swear the trick is real. “I wasn't there to witness it personally,” says one insider, “but I would love to have been!”

However, BMW AG's official comment on the matter is "No comment."

In any case, like the Honda commercial The Cog, nobody claims that everything worked on the first try. The Cog took more than 600 setups before it worked perfectly.—Paul Duchene

Since last year was my first time I can not say I can guess what different levels one could volunteer.

Can someone give some specific examples of what one might do? What would be the responsibilities? How small/big a time commitment would be of value?

I know that the local chapters take on a lot of the responsibilities but are there a lot of folks from other chapters that also volunteer?

I have a 2002 X5 4.6is, built 02/02. This model is pretty loaded, including NAV, DSP, CDMA Telephone, etc. It has several minor, but annoying and puzzling electrical issues:

Intermittent AM radio failure - About 10% of the time, while on the AM band, a tuned station will play for 1-2 seconds, then disappear. Then there will be no AM reception and no station will tune. Meanwhile, FM band works fine. If I power the radio off, then on again, the same behavior will occur - the station wil come on, produce audio for a second or two, then disappear. This behavior is completely random; there is no correlation between failure and internal/external/operational temperature, vibration, or anything. And as noted, it only occurs part of the time.

Intermittent vent fan while car is off - Perhaps 2% of the time, after I've turned the car off, removed the key, and walked away from the vehicle, I will hear the ventilation fan come on and off at varying speeds for a varying duration.

Center console monitor out completely - About six months ago, for a period of about 2-3 weeks, the center console monitor (and all its associated functions i.e. radio, NAV, etc.) went blank and inoperable. Specifically, it would operate normally for about 30 seconds after the car was turned on/started, then drop out. The other associated behavior during this time was a constant draw on the battery which would kill it after 2-3 days. Inexplicably, this behavior suddenly ended, and hasn't occurred in the past several months.

NAV DVD stays on - While the car is off and key removed from ignition, the NAV DVD box at the rear of the car intermittently but continuously operates. The red "power" lamp illuminates, and you can hear the DVD spinning up and down in the unit. Then it will stop for awhile, and seemingly at random start up again - all while the car is off and key in my pocket.

I have attempted to have these problems serviced, but the typical diagnosis/treatment has been to simply replace X, Y and Z boxes at costs of thousands of dollars and hope that solves the problems. For example, I have been told to replace the "final stage" unit and the entire NAV system.

I wish to get a more diagnostic approach to the problems. They all seem to be related to the center console monitor; I expect there should be some diagnostic way to detect incorrect current draws or isolate and identify the electronics involved.

Any ideas?

Hello, I am considering making my first trip to Oktoberfest in my first BMW. (550i).

I thought it was going to be a "guys week" until my wife told me she wanted to go. Among other things, this means that she will likely have to drive the van also because I dont think we can fit all the kids stuff in my car - the stroller alone fills the trunk.

Anyway, are there any special events that would be of interest to my wife and our two kids (under 2 yrs)???

I'm told my little kids will gain free admission, but I think I need to get day passes for my wife or the M2 package. Arent there some sort of meals each night or a couple nights and will the day pass get my wife into this?

Thanks!!!!!

Still thinking about when your first driving event of 2010 will be? Time to clear your April calendar!

Advanced Driving Skills School Saturday April 10

Perfect for all drivers, our ADSS school helps you learn to control your car performs in real life situations. Students advanced car control techniques in the very safe, low speed environment provided for us in the back lot at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Students spend time at our emergency maneuver exercises, skid pad, figure eight and autocross courses. You will learn how your car behaves under emergency braking, lane change, understeer and oversteer conditions -- and most important -- how to correct these by proper use of brakes, steering, throttle, and secondary effects of each. Please check our website at http://www.wmc-bmwcca.org/adss.html for more information about this event and how to register.

I have 4 style 68M 17 x 8.5" ET 50 rear wheels with 245-40 tires that I'd like to mount on the front. Is this possible using a spacer without rubbing problems? If so, what size? The stock front wheels are 17 x 7.5" ET 41 with 225-45 tires.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions on this fitment.

E28 535is versus M5 Brake Systems

I hear from all the post an opinion that the brakes are better on the E28 M5 rather than the 535is version. Knowing the M5 is a better performance...

I hear from all the post an opinion that the brakes are better on the E28 M5 rather than the 535is version. Knowing the M5 is a better performance car. I beleive this in most areas but I could not with the brakes with the data I can gleen from engineering data I had found so far. The E32 735i and E34 540i brakes are to be considered and mentioned in the my future plans. The research done and shown below is not meant argue with anyone who has done these upgrades or to change anyones opinion that is considering these upgrades. This is done for my benefit, to understand the engineering and do a cost benefit study. I am asking for the forum's members to look an my reseach and correct any errors and add any clarifications.

This is what I have found which is missing specific engineering data and the questions that arise due to this.

Master Cylinder ( Hydraulic Power Generation) ===========

What is the difference between the E28 535is and M5 Master Cylinder What is the output pressure and volume differences?

E28 535is Master Cylinder #34311153053 is different PN from E28 M5 Master Cylinder #34311155270 but same size and type: 23,81MM ATE

The Brake Servo and Pressure Regulator are the same.

Do not know brake pedal moment arm differences and how this effects Master Cylinder input pressure.

Do not know differences in timed flow in cubic centimeter per second or response delay but cannot be significant.

The front and rear brake bias is not significantly different between the two cars.

Rotors ============

Front Rotors are 18mm larger in diameter and 5mm thicker which does improve the heat abatement characteristics thus reducing fade. The larger diameter can improve the brake moment arm but I have no data on the delta distance centerline of wheel relative to centerline of braking force from pistons/pads. If greater distance it may be offset by the increased inertial mass due to the rotors and the added vehicle weight.

Rear Rotors are the same.

Brake Calipers =======================

Saw some info on the forum that can lead one to believe that the 535is have only 1 piston per front caliper and the M5 has 4. The M5 does have 4 pistons but 2 per wheel caliper and the 535is has 2 pistons or 1 per wheel caliper. The piston bore or pressure area of both are virually identical. 535is has a 57mm bore (2550 sq.mm) and the M5 has two 40mm bore pistons (2512 sq.mm)

The front calipers are #:34111160369/370 for the 535is and the calipers repair kit is #34111153208, (ATE FN-57)

The front calipers are #:34112225002/003 for the M5 and the calipers repair kit is #34111158692 front and rear

Rear calipers are different #34211160397/398 and #34211160393/394. The piston bore is the same as both use the same piston repair kit #34211153194.
NOTE: Though number are the difference the carriers are the same so maybe BMW gave the calipers a different number so they could charge more since it would go on a more expensive car.

Brake Lines ==================================

Higher pressure and flow volume at the caliper input port will signicantly change the piston force to the pads negating the fact that the overall piston area is the same. As asked above what are the pressure and flow volume differences between the two systems. The diameter of the brake lines supplying the caliper input ports is identical. If the M5 has a higher flow volume why would be brake line be the same because with increased flow the pressure drop increases. Higher input pressure would be needed to overcome the increase pressure drop but this does not seem the best approach.

Brakes Pads =================================

Jurid pads are OEM for both cars but with different compounds. The M5 pads do appear larger by 10-20% and this will increase the fictional drag thus improving stopping power. I question how much if the the hydraulic power supplied by both the 535is and M5 brake systems is the same. The larger M5 pads would be lesser pressure per square mm but the overall force should be the same.
The formula for frictional stopping power is (Force due to friction = coefficient of friction x Force due to pressure). Assuming the compression force is the same this is not the answer

The 535is uses JURID 508 #34211157925 and the M5 uses ENERGIT 582 #34212226013 which is also a Jurid and both look identical.

Do not yet know the difference in the pad compounds. The coefficient of friction may be better on the M5 type and they may have better heat abatement thus resist fade better. The pads with the three gaps between sections does enhance the heat abatement. The main purpose of the pads and rotors outside of stopping the car is this Heat Abatement. With the facts above the larger pads even creating less PSI force on the rotors coupled with the pads four sections and a better compound must abate/dissippate the heat generated more efficiently.

CONCLUSION =========================================

I still believe the M5 brakes are better but not that much significantly better, maybe 20%. I believe this improvement is due solely to the front brakes. I could not justify spend the money for front and rear M5 calipers to upgrade my 535is. Even if I raced this car the most I would do is the fronts with the M5 types. The next step would be to upgrade the rears with the e32/e34 types. I did this exercise to justify in my mind if the engineering backed up the desire for the "wizbang gotta have one of those" trap that we motorheads tend to jump into headfirst. If I were a rich man or had no other financial responsiblities, I to would want the best and what the hell if the improvement does not justify the cost.

As stated several times above some enginnering was not found and assumptions were made as to the significance of said missing data. I am stubborn and anal and maybe to some a little flawed in my approach. If you have solid engineering data to pass on, I would greatly appreciate the education even if it proves me wrong. I promise to admit it in this forum.

Some of you will disagree and think me an a..hole and a fool. Some of you will argue with me and state this on this forum. Some of you that do this without solid engineering to back your opinion up will do so because of your own agenda. I welcome all data and opinions and my agenda is only knowing the facts.

CREDITS: My data was gleened from a similar study found on the mye28.com forum, RealOEM.com, online vendors and manufacturer websites.

NEXT STEP =============================

I will do this same exercise for the E32 and E34 brake systems. My preliminary opinion based on the reseach does thus far is guarded. The e32 735i & e34 540i front brakes are the same and an improvement over the e28 535is fronts but may be equal with the e28 M5 brakes. Though the e32 735i rear brakes are a slight improvement over the e28 535is rear brakes, the e34 540i rear brake appear to be a much greater improvement. The e34 540i brakes should be an improvement but the e28 535is may not have the hydraulic Power of the e34 540i. The brake lines are smaller on the 535is so voumeric flow and pressure would not be the same. I have yet to determine the Master Cylinder, Brake Servo and Pressure Regualtor differences. I hope this is more positive.
I am still a "Motorhead and have to fight the attitude of "I gotta have one of these".

I'm looking everywhere for an answer to a puzzling problem. Please forgive me if you've already read my post on mye28.com.

I recently replaced the differential in my '88 535is (5-speed) with a 3.46 LS unit sourced from an '88 528e automatic. If it matters, the original was a 3.25 open differential. After the swap everything worked as expected, except for the speedometer, which didn't register at all.

After a series of tests that I won't bother to describe here, I think I have traced the problem to the sensor in the differential. This is supposed to generate a pulse as the teeth of a chopper wheel inside the differential pass between two prongs on the sensor. I have verified that this does happen with the sensor installed in the original differential, but not with the "new" one. Strangely, it appears that the tips of the chopper wheel blades are farther inside the differential in the new unit compared to the old one. That is, measuring from the sensor mounting surface, the depth to the blade is about 12 mm in the original differential and 19 mm in the replacement.

I thought all of the e28 differentials were completely interchangeable, and it seems that only one speedometer sensor is available all of them. Given this, I don't know what's needed to fix this problem. New sensors cost $50, so I'm reluctant to try a one unless there is a reason to think it would work differently than the 2 I have. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just as a possible help to someone out there, not that long ago i replaced the reserve tank, water pump, hoses, fan clutch, belt and assorted other bits of the cooling system (had a new radiator from BMW) due to a failed water pump. I unfortunatly forgot to replace a key componet, the thermostat.

Naturally it failed not long after (having been the stock 03 unit) and caused the engine to get hot and blow the vent plug on the reserve tank, this in turn dumped the coolant and left me on the side of the road. I shut it down immediatly.

The value add of this note is two part, one, replace the cooling systems on the 540 as a set to avoid this problem. An aftenoons work and not that much compared to a tow and etc.

Two, I picked up a new thermostat, vent plug, and BMW coolant, (about $125) and changed it out on the road side in about 15 minutes. Car started and the temp guage went to slightly lower then normal (the car had sat for a little while) and then about 5-10 seconds later jumped to the full hot side. I then blead the air out and tied again. Same funny 2 step and a check engine light.

It was my lucky day because it turns out that a great indy BMW guy was at the bottom of the hill and i could roll into his shop. He checked it over and plugged in the computer. He reset the check engine and the engine hot codes and the guage when back to normal. We measured the temp with a probe for about 15 minutes to confirm but car is fine.

Prob could have removed the battery to reset but strange behavior to require a computer reset after a themostat replacement.

This seemed like the most likely place to put this.

In December I bought a '99 M3, very clean, very nice, 57,700 miles. Runs like a bat out of hell.

Anyway, about ten days ago at work, the car was in the parking lot, all by itself, 50 feet from the nearest car and a pizza delivery driver ran into the driver's side of the car hard enough to move the rear wheels 2+ feet sideways. took it to a body shop, $1800, no panel replacement. Talked to State Farm (his insurance), appears to be no problem with the repair, I told them that I wanted a wheel alignment and that seems to be fine with them.

Now, the advice I need pertains to value loss. When I brought it up, she mailed me a WV case (where I live) that she says is the case law in the state. It states that there must be structural damage (which there isn't) and appreciable value (which it has). Now the difference it that this case is from 1990, long before someone could set at their computer and pull a detailed Carfax that will show the accident. Right now, the Carfax shows a minor sheet metal damage accident in 2000. Now this will be the second.

Is there any hope in perusing this and any ideas on how to come up with the value before and after? I would greatly appreciate any and all ideas.

Thanks

I knew this kid from 2001 that lived near me when I was still living with my father. In the past year he has appeared from under a rock when he told me his life story last year that his gf cheated on him, took all his money, this and that and blah blah blah. Maybe he was lying but I gave him $7 so he can get some food. This happened around last April. Since the past year I have seen him walking up and down all over Beacon. I assume he could be homeless? Sucks but I have my own issues to deal with. So just tonight I go over to my local Dunkin Donuts and he happens to be sitting in the backseat of a neon (I didn't see him). As I get out of the e39 I hear a voice and I knew it was him. I'm thinking to myself that he wants $$$$$$ or something so I completely blow him off. He then gets loud with me as I'm walking towards the store saying, "Hey, I'm talking to you". I stopped, turned around with a dirty look and told him, "I'm getting some food"! I stared him down 5 seconds until he turned around and got back in that crappy neon deion. I'm thinking who the hell is this clown getting loud with me? If he wanted some action he could come and get it. From what I recall he wasn't a douche but I guess poverty or whatever has changed him. As I'm in the store I was hoping he wasn't doing any naughty things to the 5er because it would have been me vs at least 3 guys. I'm thinking Jason Bourne time :). As I approach my car I look over to the neon but couldn't see much since it had dark tint and its dark out. So I getz in e39 and take off. No damage to my 5er. It won't be the last time I will run into him again so if he starts off I'll just say that I have no time. If he acts up again then I'll take it from there.

After I turned the car off and started walking away I heard a pop. I turned around and saw smoke/steam coming from my hood and a bunch of water was pouring out from under my car. the steam was mostly the driver side of the car near the airfilter

I'm waiting for the car to cool down before checking the antifreeze, but I doubt its that.

Any suggestions? maybe water pump?

I just had the oil filter housing gasket replace by my mechanic. I wonder if he did something wrong.
New to O'fest and I don't see any info on what some of the events actually are. If someone can briefly describe what each of the following are that would be great!

BimmerMeet II - is this like a show n shine or something?

closing banquet - what is this other than dinner? is there an awards ceremony or something? Worth paying for if we didn't attend early in the week?

also, we will only be attending Fri, Sat, Sun so the packages don't really apply to us but should we be worried that events will be sold out by the day of the events? Can we get day passes in advance?

Thanks!

I've noticed that the guys here tend to be "conservative" and tend to have low opinions of most of the products out there that claim to have benefits for our cars.

What about MoS2 (Molybdenum Disulphide) as a friction reducer? That does not sound like snake oil to me. Old school proven technology. Lubro-Moly sells a MoS2 treatment that is added to the oil.

I'm assuming you guys think Teflon oil treatments and the like are snake oil. I'm not sure (leaning towards "they don't work" these days). Slick 50 used to claim their Teflon would penetrate and stick to the metal in the engine. I'm quite doubtful of that today.

I have used Slick 50 once or twice in the past with no ill effects (Mazda RX-7 and Toyota 4Runner). But in the Beemer... not so much.

BTW, my 2000 528i has 147k on the clock.

What are the tangible benefits of the BMWCCA Affinity Card?

I probably don't use credit cards like the average user. I pay them off every month so the financing rate and balance transfer benefits are...

I probably don't use credit cards like the average user. I pay them off every month so the financing rate and balance transfer benefits are meaningless to me.

Reasons I'm considering the card are:

- Right now, 1 year membership extension (assuming you meet the $100 in 60 days quota)
- No membership fee
- 1% cash back
- Custom picture

There are also fairly vague references to:

- Travel on any airline without blackout dates
- BMW Performance Center driving experiences
- Exclusive travel excursions and sporting events
- Name brand merchandise and gift cards

I cant seem to find any concrete information on those last 4 points (either on BMWCCA or PartnersFirst sites), and from what I've been able to read on the forums there seems to be some unhappiness with the service of the card providers. Naturally, most people don't post to wax poetic about how great things are, so I get that some of the responses in the forum can be one-sided, but what I'm trying to figure out is, is this something worth getting at all?

I don't really want or need another credit card, so the only motivation to get it is if I can receive some tangible value out of it, and I'd want to make sure it's customer service is top notch, otherwise I won't use it. I already get cash back on all credit purchases and never pay any fee whatsoever, so it comes down to the whatever these vague benefits are.

So...can anyone tell me whether or not they've had positive experiences with this card? How are their online tools for account management? Any good customer service stories? How do they count and is it easy to redeem points?

Thanks in advance for any insight,

I just recently came into ownership of another 2002, which is fated to be a parts car. I have already begun taking it apart and came across some interesting things.

1) while removing the engine i noticed that it did not have a stock head. The head is marked as a head from an E12 manufactured in 1980. The E12 was the early 5 series designation and i dont believe that a 4-cylinder 5 was ever imported to the US.

2) In the process of removing the engine we had to disconnect a chain from spanning from the driver side box rail to the engine block and a small hydraulic ram from the passenger side box rail to the block. The only thing that i can think of is that they were there to prevent the engine from torquing itself under throttle.

On another note, does anyone know how to determine if the steering box is a quick ratio box?

thanks for the help

my E46 has 161,000 miles on it. Runs like a top, but oil seems to disappear: 1 quart every thousand miles! I say "disappear" because their are no other symptoms like bad mileage, black smoke, or leaks. I've been told that this could be a problem with a malfunctioning PCV valve, particular in colder climes (I live in Vermont), and there is a kit to fix the issue. My questions: 1. has anyone else had this experience? 2. If there is a repair "kit" for a known problem, why isn't this a recall? I've had to add oil more frequently than I thought proper since the car was quite young (though not at the qrt./1000mi rate) and brought it to my dealer's attention back when the car was under warranty. The cost to do this repair: Over $200 for the kit, almost $600 for labor! That's if I do it at the dealer. $200 less labor if I go to a reliable, but unauthorized, garage. Help! randy@teamswork.biz

True hybrid can run on batteries alone

True hybrid can run on batteries alone

Moving their electric-drive technology down the model line, BMW introduced the Concept 5 Series Active Hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show. Unlike the Active Hybrid 7 Series V8, however, the Fünfer uses a straight-six turbocharged engine in front of the now-familiar eight-speed automatic transmission. Between the engine and transmission is an electrical drive system developed specifically for the 5 Series; drawing its energy from a high-voltage battery near the rear axle, the electric motor develops maximum output of 40 kW (53 horsepower). An automatic clutch connects the engine and the electric motor.[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2240[/FLOATRIGHT]

As in the Active Hybrid 7 Series, the electric motor adds a dash of steroids to the turbo six, providing, in BMW’s words, “extremely spontaneous and dynamic acceleration whenever required.” Meanwhile, both fuel consumption and emissions are reduced by more than 10%.

The drivetrain technology featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series Active Hybrid allows all-electric, zero-emission motoring in city traffic, while special hybrid-based Auto Start Stop function offers additional efficiency by consistently switching off the combustion engine when stopping at the traffic lights, a road junction, or in congested traffic.[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2241[/FLOATLEFT]

The high-voltage battery—developed for this specific car—fits within a high-strength special case near the rear axle to maintain BMW’s near-ideal weight distribution. An integrated control unit permanently analyses the charge status of the high-voltage battery, controlling both the battery-charging process by way of Brake Energy Regeneration and the system cooling process.

[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2242[/FLOATRIGHT]Apart from the electric motor, the high-voltage battery also delivers electric power to the car’s on-board network. Among other things, this allows efficient operation of the car’s auxiliary climate control, which is activated by a remote-control function to cool down the car’s interior significantly—even before starting the engine.

While the Geneva car is only a concept, it could conceivably be in the hands of buyers by next year.

I have a dilemma. I have a paid-for 2001 530i with 112k well-maintained miles as a family car (two small children). Not sure if I want to dump it and take on debt -- we want a Honda Pilot.
I have been in a wait-and-see mode for so long (looking at the Pilot since 2008), I am now caught in the BBD mode. (Bigger Better Deal).
What my motivation has been recently is: take 9 grand for the 5 and put into the new Pilot. Rather than wait for the tranny to go south and then take it in the shorts. I figure I have 20k miles left of trouble-free running in the 5.
It is gambling either way. You may ask, what is holding me back?
1. Taking on debt, even though the deals are really good
2. The lower mileage on the Pilot
3. We're out of winter
4. The economy is far from out of the woods
5. The girls fit comfortably in the 5, and will for a few years

My head hurts

any wisdom is welcome

[wow...to top it all off, I just received a very nice carbon-fiber based writing instrument from BMW in the mail today, 2nd anniversary for the M purchase. It's like.... they know.... somehow.... that I was about to turn.... AAHHHHGGG !!! ... I really like this pen.]

Ok my question is, If my sunroof seal was leaking wouldn't the water go down the drains and out of the car? I really don't think they would design it like that. I remember my e30 had little pipes going down the pillar and drain outside.

I cant take this anymore i don't have the time or money to keep dropping the car off at the dealer and not getting the job done.

Chevrolet and SEAT vanquished BMW as the World Touring Car Championship season began at the Curitiba circuit in Brazil.

BMW’s factory 320si team this year is RBM, with cars for Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus. Chevrolet is running three factory team Cruze LTs, while last year’s champion SEAT does not have a factory team in the series, but is supporting privateers who are running the Leon 2.0 TDI. There are six privateer BMWs in the series’ 21-car field.
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2239 Augusto Farfus and Andy Priaulx opened BMW's WTCC season in Brazil. [/FLOATLEFT]
Race one started behind the pace car on a wet and rainy circuit. The pace car pulled in after two laps, and the rain stopped soon after the track went green. Priaulx and Farfus, who had qualified sixth and seventh, finished fifth and sixth in a race dominated by Chevrolet. It was an all bowtie podium, with Chevrolet’s Yvan Muller winning ahead of his teammates Rob Huff and Alain Menu. Defending series champion Gabriele Tarquini finished fourth in his SEAT.

Race two, run in dry conditions, went to Tarquini, who finished ahead of his teammate Jordi Gene. Priaulx retired after contact with Tarquini in the first turn, and Farfus, running in front of his hometown crowd, finished sixth, falling back from his third starting position after contact with another car.

Team RBM principal Bart Mampaey said, “We had a decent first race in very tricky conditions. Andy went for a slightly different set-up to Augusto. While Augusto was quicker in the beginning, Andy was on the pace towards the end. So we finished fifth and sixth, which gave us some points and promising grid positions for the second race. With the track drying out and considering the pace we had shown in the dry earlier this weekend, our expectations were high. But both of our cars were touched by another competitor at the start. While Andy was forced to retire, Augusto was able to prove that we had good pace. But it was just not possible for him to gain more ground. This has been a difficult start to the season. We will look into this and keep on working.”

WTCC competition is scheduled to resume at the Puebla circuit in Mexico on April 11, but on March 8 autosport.com is reporting that the event has been canceled because "local authorities informed series bosses last week that the safety of visitors could not be guaranteed due to unrest in the region." Stay tuned for more details..—Brian S. Morgan, motorsports editor, bmwcca.org

Pruett, Rojas win at Homestead

Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas won the Grand-Am Rolex Series race at Homestead Miami Speedway, finishing ahead of the hard-charging Brumos Riley-Porsche of David Donohue/Darren Law. The win, the first of the season for the Dinan BMW-powered prototype, propelled Pruett and Rojas into the series’ points lead.

Law, who started from the pole, led for much of the first 1¾ hours of the race, but his Riley-Porsche lost the lead when he came in for a pit stop with about an hour left in the race. A fire had just been extinguished in a Mazda RX-8 sitting in the middle of the pit road, but when Law came in for his stop the car was still there, forcing him to slow.
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2229 The Riley-BMW of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas took the overall win at Homestead. (Jon van Woerden photo) [/FLOATLEFT]
Pruett came in for a very quick stop soon after the Riley-Porsche returned to the track with Donohue at the controls. Pruett held onto the lead for the rest of the race, holding off Donohue, who finished a close second. The Starworks Riley-BMW of Ryan Dalziel/Mike Forest finished fifth in its first race.

At the start of the race, Memo Rojas came together with the Riley-Ford of Brian Frisselle, whose car spun as a result. Many believed that a penalty would be forthcoming, but Grand-Am said that the incident was unavoidable side-to-side contact, so Rojas was allowed to continue.

Turner M6 finishes fifth in GT
[FLOATRIGHT]Attachment 2230 The Turner M6 led at one point, but finished fifth in GT. (Jon van Woerden photo) [/FLOATRIGHT]
The Turner Motorsport M6 of Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand finished fifth in GT on a difficult weekend for the team. Because of a power-steering problem, the car had run only a few laps in practice before the race. Still, starting from the back, Auberlen moved the car up, running as high as second. He turned the car over to Hand, who led for several laps on his stint. However, trouble with the left front wheel on a late-race pit stop took the M6 out of contention for a podium spot. The class win went to the Mazda RX-8 of Jeff Segal/Emil Assentato.

The E92s battle restrictors and Mustangs at Homestead

Despite intake restrictors placed on the E92 M3s by Grand-Am, BMWs clawed their way to the front of the pack in Saturday's Continental Challenge race at Homestead.

The restrictors took their toll in qualifying; the fastest qualifying BMW was the seventh-place Fall-Line E92 M3 of Charles Espenlaub/Charles Putman that lined up behind five Mustangs and an Audi.
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2231 A sudden drop in visibility halted Matt Plumb's charge to victory at Homestead. (Grand-Am photo). [/FLOATLEFT]
The Mustangs dominated for the first 1¾ hours of the 2½-hour race, until Matt Plumb took the lead in his Rum Bum E92 M3. But when Eric Curran in one of the Fall-Line M3s had to slow abruptly in traffic, Plumb ran into him. The incident left Plumb’s hood folded back over the windshield, and, flying blind as he tried to return to the pits, he ran into the barrels of sand at the pit entrance, ending his race just eleven laps before the end. Billy Johnson took over in the Mustang he shared with Jack Roush Jr. and held on for the overall and Grand Sport win. The Fall-Line M3 of Terry Borcheller/Andrew Hendricks was second, and the Turner Motorsport M3 of Joey Hand/Michael Marsal was third.

Mini is third and BimmerWorld is fourth in Street Tuner

In the Street Tuner class, Sarah Cattaneo started from the pole in the RSR Mini that she shared with VJ Mirzayan, but the car fell back during the race. In the end, another RSR Mini driven by BJ Zacharias/Craig Conway finished third, and the BimmerWorld E90 328i of Seth Thomas/Bill Heumann finished fourth. The class win went to the Mazda MX-5 of Derek Whitis/Tom Long.

I just ordered the window regulators for both the right and left doors of my 325is. I've been in there before but I've never replaced window regulators. Any tips? I've heard it will be close quarters work!

By the way Bavarian Autoparts also had the battery cover for my trunk. I've been looking for one for a while now. Why does this part always seem to be missing from so many E-30s? I've looked through several junkyards trying to locate one. I'm sure glad they had them.

In addition, does any one know of a better way to install seal belt buckle stops? Bavarian Autoparts sells them and I've installed several, they work great but never seem to stay in place longer than 3 to 4 months. I've tried using a chain breaker tool (for motorcyles) to mushroom the plastic point as uniformily as possible but it always seems to end up less than perfect. Does anyone have experience with these or know of a tool or better procedure to install them?

Turning wrench as always!

I have the a chance to pickup a 1989 750 il engine for possible use in a 1947 Kaiser-Frazer project car.

Does anyone know of a thread or source of info on running this motor in a "'manual mode" without the brain box via carbs and a conventional ignition system?

I also understand that this motor will mate with a manual 6 speed transmission from a 540. Can anyone recommend a source for information on this?

The conversion would replace a 100 hp cast iron 6 cylinder w/ a manual 3 speed, therefore I don't care if the conversion results in less hp then the factory setup.

Thanks!

 High Performance Driving School
BMW CCA Driving Schools are conducted on a closed circuit and supervised by experienced instructors. Holding a school on a closed venue eliminates all outside influences, resulting in a safer learning environment. The primary emphasis of the High Performance Driving School is a "hands-on" driving experience in your own car with a BMW CCA Driving Instructor sitting beside you.
You will learn how to handle and control your car in this secure environment, which will prepare you for emergencies and allow you to discover your limits and your car’s capabilities. In addition to one-on-one instruction with your instructor, classroom sessions help teach the application of theory. A Driving School is an excellent way to enjoy your car, while building skills and driving proficiency. The school is open to students of all skill level. Novices with no track event experience are welcome.

The inspection focuses on the engine compartment condition, brakes, tires, suspension, steering, etc., in an attempt to ensure the cars have adequate systems before they are driven on the track. Although it is acceptable, if you are qualified to do a self- inspection, it is highly recommended that your technical inspection form be completed by known BMW shops. To ensure safety of all participants, we must insist on a proper safety inspection being carried out by qualified individuals. This is for your benefit and safety, as well as the safety of other drivers on the track. A tech inspection form is attached to this material and is to be completed, signed and brought to registration.
Upon arrival at the track, you will need to find a parking spot and empty your car of all loose objects, including hubcaps and trim rings.
There will be designated passing zones and passing will only be done within these designated areas, except when "Open Passing" is initiated in the A/B run group sessions, which will be announced by the instructor group. We will be using the point-by rules and will be strictly enforced. No point-by, no pass.
There will be no timing allowed at this event.
There is a 10-mile per hour speed limit in the paddock area. This will be strictly enforced.
We at the Central California Chapter of the BMW Car Club are looking forward to your participation with us at this event. Please review your general release for this event as it contains a separate paragraph concerning your personal automobile insurance. It is important to understand that the Central California Chapter makes no representation as to the applicability of your personal automobile insurance for coverage during this event.

I also posted on the tech talk forum, but I'm newbie, so not sure where I should have posted:

Hi. I have a 2006 BMW M5. For a couple of months now the car has had a slight vibration inbetween 2150 and 2350 RPM in every gear. I took the car to the dealer and the SA felt the vibration, but upon checking the car they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

It's a light vibration, but defenitely there. It feels like I'm running over a small patch of rumble strips. It deos it in virtually every gear between 2150 and 2350 rpm. It's very annoying when I'm in say, 4th gear and going about 40 miles per hour. It's a normal speed to be in and the vibration is driving me crazy. I rode with the SA and I felt it from the passenger seat, but when your hands are on the wheel, it's more noticeable.

Please help. Dealer cannot find anything wrong with it, but it has never done this before. My car has 44k miles and it had a new clutch and flywheel put in by the dealer under warranty in Nov 2009. It's a 7 speed SMG.

Thanks.
Hey, maybe someone out there thinks their sport seats are too restrictive...

Okay, I have owned my new 2009 328i convrtible for about a month now and I either have not noticed this before, or something changed, or something is wrong:

I parked the car (automatic transmission) in the garage and shut it off and left, locking the doors with the key fob. Later, when I stopped in the garage to drop off some trash, I noticed that the amber indicator light next to the letter "P" on the shift selector was illuminated. Yes indeed the car was in Park, but it was not on - this seems like odd behavior, or at least wasteful of energy, unless it's trying to tell me something.

Starting the car and shifting out of Park and then back does not fix the issue. When I stop the engine and leave, the light remains on. It's been an hour now and that little LED is still lit - nothing else is on. Just the little amber light telling me I'm in Park.

Is this normal behavior and I'm just weird, or what? I've tried to RTFM and find no mention of this.

Thanks for any help.
I would pay top dollar and drive HOURS for an Artic Silver top. Next would be black, and other colors I would have to paint but would still be interested.
I have the install kit on the car already, so you can keep that.

This is going to be our first O'fest, sorry about the rookie questions.

Me and my wife are planning to drive our e21 from California -- we will be in the area the whole week. We are looking at the schedule and some things are not clear:

1) Does the daily pass include everything that is happening that day? We have 1 car and it's two of us- I assume we need to get two passes for each day?

2) If we want to do some events that are happening during the day, do we just buy daily pass and skip events, or we can pay for each event separately? (Like TSD rallies for example)

3) Is it possible to just come by and see a driving school or club race? Are daily passes needed to come inside?

We are mainly interested in the concours, all the rallies and maybe autocrossing!

Thank you,

Are reconditioned wheels a good idea or bad idea?

I have some flat spots on the inner rims of 3 of my 4 wheels that were most likely caused by potholes. A couple of them are pretty significant. So I'm looking for a solution.

Some vendors on eBay and the web talk about wheel reconditioning. I had my own wheels reconditioned about 13 months ago and they came out looking great. But I knew the history on the wheels since I was the original owner of the car and knew the reconditioning was going to be more cosmetic than structural.

However, now that I have to replace my wheels, I'm concerned about buying reconditioned wheels that I don't know the history of. I was looking at RTW Wheels online and they seem to have a very large investment in machines and years of history, so they may be a good bet. But I've heard horror stories about micro-fractures and other problems with light alloy wheels like mine that make me hesitate.

Does anyone have any experience they could share with me?

Thanks,

Dealership provides membership—and member service

Like several other enthusiast-oriented BMW dealerships, San Diego’s BMW South County supports its local chapter, going as far as paying for a one-year membership for each new-car or CPO purchaser. But BMW South County goes even farther, tailoring dealership events to intersect with Club activities. “We’ve been putting on Women Only tech session,” says Nick Owen, a service tech at the facility. “We get anywhere from eight to a dozen women and pick a few cars to put up in the air and talk about what various components look like, and their function. We offer this to both customer and Club members, because we hope we can get customers to join the Club so they’ll participate more often.”
[FLOATLEFT]Attachment 2226BMW South County offers “Women Only” tech sessions for all their customers, not just Club members.[/FLOATLEFT]
Those free memberships to buyers are more than just a token gesture; Owen serves as a natural point of contact because he is also vice president of the San Diego Chapter. His interactions between the chapter and BMW South County—primary sponsors of the chapter’s autocross season—have convinced him that dealer support of the CCA builds a loyal business clientele.

“We're implementing a tracking system into the software program we use at the store,” says Owen. “This will allow us to keep CCA membership information on file, so customers can register with us, have their membership number and expiration date on file, and automatically give them their 10% discount so they will not have to bother asking. This will also provide BMW CCA and us with data as to how much members spend—and on what.”

The dealership is also looking into a method of letting CCA members register with the dealership on line so their data is complete when they visit the dealership.

This win-win relationship between chapter and dealership allows a genuine measure of the importance of dealer loyalty and Club support—and may well allow the San Diego Chapter to increase by 50% in the next year.—Satch Carlson

Hi, Folks -

Nice to be here; there seems to be a great deal of knowledge and experience that I hope to learn from. I've been a member since January of this year but just getting around to getting into the forums. Don't know much about how to use all the features (avatars, icons, pictures, etc) but I guess I'll learn as I go along.
As a recently retired airline pilot, I have more time now to pursue my hobbies. My newest is restoring a basket case. More about that later.
I've had three BMWs. The first was a 1971 1600 that I bought in California in 1984 while I was in the Army, and kept only long enough to learn that fixing it up and maintaining it was well beyond my capabilities. I traded that in on a nice '76 2002 four-speed. Had some body and paint work done on it, put 318 wheels on it and brought it back to New York when I left the Army.in 1988. The New York winters took their toll on that car, and in 1995, when I got tired of trying to keep up with the rust, I traded it on a 1988 325. I drove that for about three years and finally sold it outright.
Twelve years later, I was driving down a street in a small village here in Orange County, NY and I saw a blue '76 2002A in a driveway with a sign on it - $2500 OBO - and stopped to check it out. Not too bad overall, rust where you would expect it; sills, shock towers, lower rear quarters and spare tire well, but otherwise sound and running reasonably well. Didn't really want an automatic, but there was just something about the car that I couldn't resist. So I gave the guy $2250 and the love affair began all over again. I decided to do it right, so I took everything that I could off and out of the car. Of course, the more I did, the more I realized I needed to do...
The transmission has been rebuilt, the engine has been bored and boiled, with new pistons and bearings, and the body work has begun. Parts are reasonably available, though expensive, and I'll be leaning on BMWCCA members for help and advice, like, does anyone know where I can get a complete[ trim and moulding kit with all the clips and fasteners, so that I don't have to buy everything piecemeal from a dozen different sources?
I hope I haven't bored or offended anyone with too much information. I'll post some pictures as soon as I figure out how to do that...

Regards -

Mike B.

I hope I picked the right forum to post in for this question.

I am nearing my first year of being a member of BMWCCA, I joined in March ’09 the same day I bought my first BMW.

Because of the wonderful welcome of the Houston chapter (woohooo Road Mokeys) and the amazing time I had attending O’fest with this group I decided a few months ago to go ahead and sign up for the lifetime membership prior to the price increase.

I am 45 and hopefully I will make it another 20 years to where it will pay for itself the same as if I bought a yearly membership or 5 year blocks or any of the alternatives.

But I wanted to share with you a bit of my disappointment to the limit of benefits of a lifetime membership.

Basically I no longer have to remember to renew my membership and they are going to send me a pin and of course I am not subject to membership fee increase but those are all of the benefits a lifetime membership provides.

Oh one more thing and I found this funny. If I had renewed for another year and gotten the BMWCCA credit card it would have paid for my renewal, but the club did not even allow me to get the same amount of the one year renewal credited to the price of the lifetime membership but I got the card anyway to support the club and they do have good interest rates.

Even with that in mind because of the fun I have been having with my local chapter and O’fest I decided to go ahead and spend the money.

I would however like the club to take another look at this and see if they could come up with a few more benefits for people willing to become a lifetime member. Obviously membership fees are very important to the club so wouldn’t it be worth it to provide them with a few other benefits.

By the way another member of our local chapter also asked me to mention that if a person has been a member for a consecutive 20 years or more purchasing one year or five year memberships they also should receive some benefit like maybe just freezing the membership fee for any future years beyond 20.

Off the top of my head I don’t have any specific suggestions as to other benefits, it could be as little as a ball cap, polo shirt, t-shirt or anything. But to have the big prize being a pin I just found that a bit lacking. Don’t get me wrong I am a very happy member of the club and am now committed for life. Sure hope I make it the 20 years so I get my money’s worth (said tongue in cheek.)

Okay if convertibles were allowed to do the driving school I would sign up for the M1 package for $498. But it is not allowed. However, I want to do everything else in that package.

Can I do so and subtract the $250 cost of the driving school bringing my registration fee to $248?

Or do I have to buy package M2 for $220 plus then add $35 for autocross and $60 for the car control clinic bringing it up to $315.

That would make me spend $67 more because I own a convertible.

Fair?????

I found the "Touring" in the Autotrader online from Motorcars International, a Euro Specialty used car Dealer in Bridgewater Mass.

It's Ti Silver with a black interior and was in exceptional shape at a very reasonable price. Looking forward to making a few tasteful mods (iPod & Sirius interface, K&N filter, etc.) to personalize it a little.

Wondering if any one has had to deal with a rear main seal (engine) leak on an E-39 540i? My indy tells me they have seen quite a few of these and usually in much worse condition than mine. Based on the Bentley's repair manual the fix looks fairly involved. I was quoted almost $1K for the repair (about 12 hours of labor and $150-200 in parts. Fair/reasonable? If I go ahead with this repair (which I probably will since the leak will only get worse) is there anything else - repair/replace wise - I should get done while it's apart and in the air? Thanks.

New owner & BMWCCA member here. I've already learned a great deal about my 335i (2007 sedan, manual trans, sport, premium, Montego blue, 22k miles) from this forum and first wanted to thank all of you for sharing your extensive knowledge and expertise.

My question deals with the display screen of my iDrive. I would like to turn it totally off at times, especially at night. After I select the "Display Off" button, the screen does indeed go blank, but is still dimly illuminated with a blueish tint. Am I missing something here? I want it OFF - totally black.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello folks, I am new to the forum so please be gentile.
This is my second E46, the first was crashed. Both cars had the same anomaly. When I am stopped with the car in gear periodically the idle will briefly dip below 5400 RPM shacking the car then go right back up to where it is supposed to be. This happens about a couple of times a day but not often enough to replicate it for a dealer service technician.
Anyone else experience this? Any ideas?
Thanks.

I just had my run flat tires replaced by a reputable tire dealer (Radial Tires) in DC area. I replaced them with Michelin all season tires. Right after I replaced my tires, one of my wheels started leaking some air. It took it back to the Radial and they told me I had a cracked wheel. They also told me they see tons of 6 series cracked wheels and showed me a bunch they have been repairing. They advised me to replace my wheels as I should be expecting more cracks soon.

Has anyone been experiencing cracked wheels after 30K miles on their 6?

Any suggestions on new wheels?
