This week I was going to celebrate the BMW Motorrad World Superbike team and what a great year it’s had, with the S1000 RR first scoring podium finishes, then winning races. But Marco Melandri crashed twice at the Nürburgring a couple of weeks ago; then he crashed and was run over at Portimao on Sunday, so he missed the second race.

Yes, I had to fly to Columbus for Oktoberfest this year, instead of driving, but I had a good excuse: I spent the weekend sliding my E30 BMW over the gravel roads of Washington and Idaho for the 49th-anniversary edition of the Nor’Wester Rally.

The news that BMW is turning to scooters in order to combat Audi’s purchase of Ducati has to be the equivalent of bringing a pair of rubber scissors to a gunfight. Can anything be further from the image of Ducati’s fire-breathing, blisteringly fast road bikes—with exotic names like the Panigale Tricolore—than a scooter?
