A fully restored 1997 McLaren F1 GTR Longtail race car went under the auctioneer’s hammer this past weekend at Gooding & Company’s Scottsdale, Arizona, auction. The winning bid was $5,280,000. The estimated sale price had been between $5,000,000 and $7,000,000, so the final price was in the ballpark.
All McLaren F1s had BMW power. This GTR Longtail has a BMW six-liter V12 that produces 604 horsepower. Campaigned by the BMW Motorsport team, this car won at Helsinki and Hockenheim. JJ Lehto and Steve Soper were among its drivers.—Scott Blazey
