BMW Team RLL’s Z4 GTEs finished seventh and eighth in the GT class in the American Le Mans Series race at Road America. Bill Auberlen and Maxime Martin finished seventh in car #55, and Dirk Müller and John Edwards finished eighth in car #56.

Dominick Farnbacher and Marc Goosens won the GT class in the 2¾-hour race, scoring the first win for the SRT Viper. The Viper led the last 40 minutes of the race, but it nearly ran out of fuel at the end, as the team elected to keep the car out on what turned out to be a race-ending yellow-flag period. Corvettes rounded out the podium, with Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia second and Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin third.

The long straights at Road America favored the Vipers and Vettes, just as they had three weeks earlier at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.  The BMWs should be more competitive in the next race, to be run on the Baltimore street circuit on August 31.

The Road America ALMS race was run on the same weekend as the Grand-Am Rolex Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge races on the Wisconsin circuit; BMW took the overall win and both class wins in the Rolex Series race, and swept the Street Tuner class podium in CTSCC .

Gordon McDonnell, BMW NA motorsport manager, said “Yesterday we saw BMW teams in close battles with our competitors within the different Grand-Am fields. Unfortunately, today, just as we saw in Canada, BMW Team RLL struggled to keep up with the competition. It is particularly difficult to again face a result so short of our team’s potential, given our horsepower deficit to the rest of the GT field.”

Müller’s finish dropped him from the GT drivers’ points lead into a three-way tie for second with Corvette’s Magnussen and Garcia. Corvette racers Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin took over the points lead.

The Delta Wing P1 prototype driven by Katherine Legge and Andy Meyrick led early in the race, and went the entire distance for the first time. The overall and P1win went to Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr; it was their fifth straight victory.—Brian S. Morgan
