Fort Huachuca Holiday Homes Tour

December 10, 2016
Chapter:
Join us this year for a Sonora Chapter tradition, the Saturday, December 10 trip to Sierra Vista and Fort Huachuca for the Holiday Homes Tour. Not only will the Post’s senior officers and their families open about a dozen of their homes, decorated for the holidays, to the public, but the Fort Huachuca Museum will be open as well. These homes and the museum are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Members of the Tombstone Vigilantes and Vigilettes, and B Troop, 4th US Cavalry (Memorial) will be there in 1880s costume to add to the festive and historic air. Also, the Fort Huachuca Morale, Welfare, and Recreation activity will be hosting their Night of Extraordinary Lights (NOEL) event on Brown Parade Field, just below the historic homes. NOEL will feature various holiday displays, booths with crafts for sale, and even glühwein, the traditional German spiced hot red wine. Tucson-area members will meet at Mike Hornisher’s former office building on the northwest corner of Tucson Blvd. and Speedway, with a planned departure time of 10 a.m. Mike and Mary will lead you on a merry and scenic chase via State Routes 83 and 82 through Sonoita and Whetstone before reaching Sierra Vista. We’ll gather for lunch at La Casita Restaurant, 456 E. Fry Blvd. at 11:15 a.m. Look for the one-story cream-and-terra cotta building on the north side of Fry. We’ll caravan from La Casita to the parking area a block from the homes. Maps will be available. IMPORTANT: Everyone in each car must have a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, in order to get on Post. The homes will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. but you’re free to leave at any time, especially if you want to get back to Tucson before dark. Tickets may be purchased for $15 on site or for $12 in advance through PayPal until noon on December 9 from http://www.fhcsc.com/tour-of-homes.html. Tickets for active duty military personnel are $10. Entry to the museum is free. The tour will go on snow or shine. Expect temperatures to be at least ten degrees cooler than Tucson’s because the homes are at 5,000 feet elevation, over twice Tucson’s altitude.
