Timo Glock started from pole, led the entire race, and finished first in the Saturday DTM race at Oschersleben in a BMW Team MTEK M4 DTM. He was followed across the line by his Team MTEK teammate Bruno Spengler, Team Schnitzer’s António Félix da Costa, and Team RBM’s Augusto Farfus.
There were three more BMW racers in the top ten; they were Marco Wittmann in sixth, Tom Blomqvist in seventh, and Martin Tomczyk in eighth. Maxime Martin finished eleventh, just out of the points.
In race two on Sunday rookie Tom Blomqvist won in only his fourteenth race in the series. He started from second, quickly moved into the lead, and stayed in front for the entire race. The race was red flagged with one lap remaining when Mercedes’ Lucas Auer crashed; he was not injured.
In the second race it was Team RBM’s turn for a one-two finish, as Blomqvist’s RBM teammate Augusto Farfus finished second. Once again BMW locked out the top four positions, as Wittmann finished third and Félix da Costa finished fourth. Glock finished seventh, Maxime Martin finished ninth, and Bruno Spengler finished tenth. Martin Tomczyk, who had to serve a drive through penalty for a pit lane violation, finished out of the points in the twentieth position.
BMW motorsport director Jens Marquardt said, “That was a sensational first win by our DTM rookie Tom Blomqvist. To find his feet so quickly in his first year, and to win a race in such dominant fashion, deserves the utmost respect. He is also one of the youngest winners in DTM history. Augusto Farfus also enjoyed a very impressive race, meaning BMW Team RBM was able to repeat the achievement of BMW Team MTEK yesterday and claim a one-two today. Marco Wittmann completed an all-BMW podium, while a further four BMWs finished in the top ten again. I am very happy with the outcome of the weekend here. We were able to make the very most of our opportunities, right across the teams. I would like to pay a huge compliment to the entire team. I hope Lucas Auer is okay after his big crash.”
Mercedes racer Pascal Wehrlein, who finished fifth in both races, leads DTM drivers’ points going into the next race weekend at the Nürburgring on September 25-27. Bruno Spengler, in fifth, is the top BMW racer in the standings, and BMW leads manufacturers’ points. —Brian S. Morgan
