More aggressive styling, more drive options, more connectivity, more efficiency: BMW has revealed the 2015 BMW X6—the second generation of the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe.

The original X6 combined the performance of a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle with the styling of a traditional coupe. When it first appeared, some loved it, some didn’t, and some didn’t know what to think. Now, eight years later, BMW has sold more than 250,000 X6s globally, so there is definitely a market for it.

BMW Manufacturing Plant Spartanburg again will be the only place the new 2015 BMW X6 will be produced. U.S. dealers will get the vehicles in late 2014, and as we get closer to their arrival, BMW will announce pricing.

In addition to the new exterior and interior design, the big news is that the X6 will be offered for the first time in rear-wheel drive. The X6 sDrive35i, powered by BMW’s 300-horsepower TwinPower Turbo inline six, will be just the thing for owners who like the taller stance, higher seating position, and convenient access to the rear cargo, but don't necessarily need all-wheel drive.

The traditional xDrive versions will still be available, and will probably constitute most of the X6 sales. The 2015 BMW X6 xDrive35i gets the same TwinPower Turbo six that comes in the sDrive35i, while the top-of-the-line X6 xDrive50i features BMW’s updated 450-horsepower TwinPower Turbo 4.4-liter V8. Every X6 gets BMW’s eight-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission.

Exterior design: dynamic proportions, fluid lines, striking accents.

There is no mistaking the silhouette of the X6, although if its smaller sibling, the BMW X4, zips by you’ll see the family resemblance. The front design, high windowsills, and large wheel arches are definitely BMW X. The long hood, long wheelbase, short front overhang, and set-back passenger compartment are definitely BMW.

The X6 retains traditional BMW styling cues, such as the BMW kidney grille and twin circular xenon headlights, now joined by the front LED foglights. Adaptive LED Headlights are optional.

BMW is clearly serious about aerodynamics. Proof lies in the air deflectors on the front wheel arches, the Air Curtains integrated into the outer air intakes of the front apron, and the Air Breathers in the fenders, which team up to reduce turbulence in the front wheel arches.

In the back, the new X6’s wide stance, high-opening tailgate, and flat rear apron paint a picture of robustness. The three-dimensional LED light strips of the two-section, L-shaped rear lights create a bold look at night.

Two non-metallic and nine metallic colors will be available for the exterior, including the new-to-the-range Dark Olive and Flamenco Red Metallic. Aluminum running boards are optional.

Interior: sporting elegance, modern luxury, advanced functionality.

The high seating position will be familiar to previous drivers of BMW X vehicles. The instrument panel and the upper-arm trim panels feature a high-quality Softskin surface with black decorative stitching. Trim elements in Poplar Wood are set on a high-gloss black surface with Pearl Gloss Chrome accents. If that’s not your style, trim strips using Brushed Aluminum, Fineline Oak Wood, Fineline Striped Wood, and Fineline Pure Wood are no-cost options.

LED units are arranged in a wrap-around contour line, and in other areas of the interior. Blue, white, and orange light can be selected, either in monochrome or in six pre-stored combinations via the iDrive system. This we will have to see in person before rendering a verdict on the interior lighting.

The instrument cluster and displays for climate control and ventilation feature black-panel technology. The content, presentation, and color of the screens in the standard Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster vary according to the mode selected using the Driving Dynamics Control switch. The freestanding, 10.2-inch flat screen Control Display is included with the standard iDrive operating system.

The standard Dakota leather is available in six colors, including the new Cognac and Coral Red. Seat heating for the driver and front passenger is standard, while heated rear seats are available in the Cold Weather Package. The standard BMW Navigation System with touchpad Controller, the Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system, and the new Rear Entertainment System will make short and longer trips more pleasant.

xLine, M Sport and options: Tailoring the BMW X6 to individual tastes.

BMW buyers may tailor their new X6 by choosing the xLine style package, the M Sport line, and an extensive array of options

Optimized functionality: variable-use load compartment, hands-free tailgate opening and closing.

The new BMW X6 interior is flexible. The rear seat backrests can be folded in configurations of 40:20:40, allowing the cargo capacity to be increased in stages from 20.5 cubic feet to a maximum of 53.9 cubic feet. X6 owners will find the numerous storage compartments handy, as well as door pockets that can accommodate 1.5-liter bottles in the front and one-liter bottles in the rear.

More functionality is built into the power tailgate, which can be opened and closed by remote control or a dash button. The Comfort Access feature, which is standard on the V8 and optional on the inline sixes, allows hands-free trunk opening and closing function. Wave your foot under a sensor in the rear apron and the rear hatch serenely rises.

M Sport for the new BMW X6.

M Sport can be ordered on all models of the new BMW X6. The aggressive styling of the X6 is enhanced by aerodynamically optimized body elements with large air intakes at the front end, strikingly contoured side skirts, and a diffuser insert for the rear apron. These are standard on the X6 xDrive50i. M Sport also includes BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line trim, 19-inch or optional 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, and the option to upgrade to the specially tuned Adaptive M suspension.

Going with the M Sport line gets you aluminum door sill strips with the M logo, the anthracite-colored BMW Individual roof liner, electrically adjustable sports seats for the driver and front passenger, interior trim in Aluminum Hexagon, an M leather steering wheel, and an M driver’s footrest. A specially designed car key is also part of M Sport.

Three-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six powers new X6 sDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i.

The 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six engine (internal code N55) that comes in the new X6 sDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i develops 300 horsepower at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 300 pound-feet available from 1,200 to 5,000 rpm. It features a single, mid-sized turbocharger with a “twin-scroll” housing to boost performance and minimize response lag. Using Valvetronic for the first time on a turbocharged inline-six allows the engine to take in air more efficiently with virtually no delay and with reduced pumping losses. The X6 sDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in six seconds, which is three-tenths quicker than the previous generation X6 xDrive35i. Fuel mileage is expected to be better due to a lower curb weight and other EfficientDynamics measures. Official EPA mileage estimates will be available closer to launch.

BMW X6 xDrive 50i features the latest TwinPower Turbo V8.

The 4.4-liter V-8 engine (N63TU) in the new X6 xDrive50i uses two turbochargers in the V-area between the cylinder banks to produce an instantaneous and sustained wave of power. This new version of the engine adds BMW’s Valvetronic variable valve timing. As a result, it develops a maximum 445 horsepower between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm (a 45 horsepower increase over the previous version), and makes peak torque of 480 pound-feet between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. Zero to 60 time is 4.8 seconds, 0.4 seconds quicker than its predecessor. The new X6 xDrive50i will also see significant efficiency gains when the new EPA mileage estimates are released.

BMW EfficientDynamics: eight-speed automatic and Eco Pro mode with new functions.

All new BMW X6 models get the eight-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission. The transmission offers a “launch control” function—a high-precision traction control system that allows translates engine power into road speed as quickly and efficiently as possible when starting from a standstill.

In Eco Pro mode, the engine management, accelerator response, and transmission characteristics are tailored to support a particularly fuel-efficient, low-rpm driving style. At the same time, Eco Pro mode also programs electrically powered functions like the climate control, heated seats, and heated exterior mirrors for efficient energy management. In Eco Pro mode, a coasting function periodically decouples the engine from the rest of the powertrain whenever the driver eases off the accelerator at speeds between 30 and 100 mph without then applying the brakes. This allows the new BMW X6 to coast without engine braking, for maximized fuel efficiency. The driver can use the Eco Pro mode In conjunction with the standard Navigation system to select fuel-efficient routes. When the navigation system is active, the Proactive Driving Assistant function also tells the driver exactly when to ease off the accelerator when approaching corners or a speed-restricted section of road, in order to save fuel.

Other BMW EfficientDynamics features include Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start/Stop, on-demand operation of ancillary units, Electric Power Steering, and a variety of weight- and drag-reducing features. The new X6 is also lighter than the previous version.

BMW xDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive and torque vectoring.

Two out of the three new X6 models have xDrive. In this latest version, the transfer case is more efficient and three pounds lighter. The connection between the all-wheel-drive system and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) allows the drive split to be adjusted in advance. All-wheel-drive performance can be in effect even before slip can occur—not only on snow and loose gravel, but also through hard corners—and the engine’s full power is transmitted to the road.

The Control Display shows the status of the xDrive system. With 3D graphics, the display shows real-time information on body roll and pitch. A compass display is in the instrument cluster. Hill Descent Control (HDC) is standard on xDrive models.

The new BMW X6 is fitted with Electric Power Steering including Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance. Active Steering—available as an option—also adjusts the steering ratio to the car’s current speed. This reduces the steering effort required for low-speed maneuvering, and provides precise responses and clear feedback at high speeds. The electromechanical parking brake with Auto Hold function is still standard on the new BMW X6.

Customers can tailor suspension response and comfort by selecting the appropriate chassis package. For example, Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension with automatic self-leveling for the rear suspension is available as a stand-alone option. Adaptive M suspension, which is an optional upgrade with M Sport, offers the same functionality. Activating Sport or Sport+ mode delivers particularly firm spring and damper characteristics.

Intelligent lightweight design: increased body rigidity, reduced weight.

Ultra-high-strength steels along with thermoplastics in the fenders, aluminum in the hood, and magnesium in the instrument panel support, all help to reduce the weight of the X6. Given identical equipment levels the new BMW X6 would actually be from 35 to 55 pounds lighter than its predecessor, depending on the model. The weight distribution is right where BMW loves it to be: 50:50.

BMW ConnectedDrive: More safety; more comfort.

The BMW ConnectedDrive systems fall into two categories: Driver assistance systems that provide important information about the current driving situation and help to improve the driver’s focus on the road and traffic; and services and Apps, which offer a host of different functions via a mobile phone or Internet connection. These functions supply information and entertainment services. The standard iDrive system with Control Display and favorites buttons provides intuitive, low-distraction operation of these functions. It includes a 10.2-inch central dashboard display and a center console-mounted touchpad Controller with touch-sensitive interface for inputting numbers and characters.

Active Driving Assistant available on the new BMW X6.

In addition to cruise control with braking function, the new BMW X6 is available with Active Driving Assistant. This camera-based driver assistance system includes Lane Departure Warning, which can be used whenever the vehicle is travelling at a speed of more than 44 mph. Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers with a visible signal in the instrument cluster and a vibration of the steering wheel if they have inadvertently drifted out of their lane. The option also includes a Pedestrian and Collision Warning system with braking function.

This system detects preceding vehicles and, at speeds up to 37 mph, it also detects pedestrians who are on a potential collision course with the vehicle. Visual and audible warnings are given if a hazardous situation is detected, and at the same time the brake system is primed in order to reduce stopping distance. At speeds of up to 37 mph, moderate “hazard” braking is also actuated, to reduce vehicle speed and to alert the driver to the critical situation.

ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant.

The optional ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant option includes the Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function that enhances comfort and safety in slow-moving and stop-go traffic. The task of maintaining a safe following distance can be delegated to this system at any speed up to 130 mph. If the driver fails to react to a warning of an imminent frontal collision, Driving Assistant Plus automatically brakes the vehicle—a lot, if necessary.

Speed Limit Info shows the speed limit for a particular road, while the Active Blind Spot Detection system assesses the traffic situation on multi-lane roads to prevent critical situations when pulling out to overtake.

Parallel parking simplified with Parking Assistant.

With the optional Parking Assistant, the new BMW X6 parks itself automatically in the selected parking space it picked for you. Technically, you still have to select the correct gear and operate the accelerator and brake pedals, but the X6 does a fine job of eyeballing the spot and steering the vehicle into it.

Other maneuvering aids include the standard Park Distance Control (PDC); the optional rear-view camera and optional Surround View system, which shows a 360-degree view of the vehicle and its surroundings in the Control Display; and the Panorama View front and rear monitoring function that gives you a better view of cross-traffic when your line of sight is blocked by something close to the front of the car, like bushes or a building.

At-a-glance monitoring: multifunction display, BMW Head-Up Display, automatic high beams, BMW Night Vision.

The new BMW X6 includes a programmable Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster. This 10.2-inch display changes its appearance depending on the selected Driving Dynamics Control mode. In Comfort mode, for example, the display shows a classic array of four circular dials. In Eco Pro mode, the rev counter is transformed into an EfficientDynamics display. In Sport mode, the speed is displayed digitally in the form of a large figure in the center of the speedometer, while the currently engaged gear is displayed in the center of the rev counter.

The BMW Head-Up Display in the new X6 can project more content than before in full color onto the windshield. Potential content includes telephone contact lists and entertainment information, vehicle speed, 3D graphics, Check Control messages, navigation information—including lane recommendations, and speed limits—and other information supplied by the driver assistance systems.

Driving enjoyment and safety at night can be enhanced by the optional Adaptive LED Headlights with automatic high beams. Also available for the new BMW X6 is the BMW Night Vision system, which now detects not only pedestrians but animals as well. The system relays a real-time video image to the Control Display showing people, larger animals, and other heat-radiating objects, even if they are outside the headlight beam. A warning is provided if there is a risk of collision.

BMW Assist eCall and TeleService.

The new BMW X6 comes with the BMW Assist eCall system and TeleService—including a ten-year subscription. If there is an impact, the system relays important information to the BMW Call Center, such as vehicle position, chassis number, vehicle model, vehicle color, and data from the onboard sensors. The system can detect how many people are in the vehicle, which airbags were activated, and the force of the impact. With BMW’s groundbreaking Urgency Algorithm, the system also uses data from the vehicle’s crash sensors to assess and transmit the likelihood of severe injury. This type of information relayed to first responders before they arrive at the scene could make a critical difference.

TeleService monitors the new X6’s service needs, such as engine oil and brakes, and transmits status and service needs to BMW. Your dealer can access the vehicle-related data and a BMW Service Advisor can pre-emptively call to arrange an appointment.

BMW ConnectedDrive Services available at all times.

BMW Assist in the new X6 includes Remote Services such as vehicle unlocking—in the unlikely event you lock your keys inside—and stolen vehicle recovery. Concierge Service is optional if you want to speak by phone with a human who can help with hotel or restaurant reservations, look for addresses and telephone numbers, or check opening times. BMW Online is also available.

BMW ConnectedDrive Office functions that use either the customer’s smartphone or the built-in SIM card, allow the owner to access e-mails, appointments, contact lists, calendar entries, and notes on the Control Display. Voice recognition lets the owner dictate notes into text that can be stored or sent as an SMS or e-mail message.

BMW Apps is standard in the new X6. Among other things, these apps support web radio functions, social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and online entertainment features provided by BMW ConnectedDrive. This strategy makes it possible to access not just proprietary BMW Group apps but also BMW Apps-ready applications from other providers such as Pandora, Audible, Stitcher, Rhapsody, TuneIn, and Glympse.
