BMW 328i continues to define the sport sedan.

The 2014 BMW 328i Sedan has just won Consumer Reports Top Picks 2014 Award for the Sport Sedan Category. BMW is justifiably proud, citing the 328i’s customary high levels of performance and handling, helped along by the car’s 240-horsepower BMW TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual or eight-speed Steptronic gearboxes.

Consumer Reports examined 260 vehicles in the process of selecting their 2014 Top Picks in ten categories. According to the magazine, each winner is “an exceptional, well-rounded vehicle.” CR continued, “They have excelled in our testing, are reliable, and have performed well in independent crash tests. In other words, it’s hard to go wrong with any of them.”

Consumer Reports Top Picks are selected based on criteria in three areas. The vehicle’s test performance must be at or near the top of its class; each vehicle must have an average or higher reliability rating; and each vehicle must prove its safety by performing adequately in government or insurance industry crash or rollover testing.

The 2014 BMW 328i met these requirements on its way to being selected the 2014 Top Pick for Sports Sedan. It seems kind of unfair since BMW has been building the defining models of sports sedans for decades. The 328i continues that tradition. According to Consumer Reports, it “delivers excellent handling and a high fun-to-drive factor.” CR also cites the car’s luxurious interior, roominess (especially in the front), fuel efficiency (28 mpg overall and best among gasoline-powered cars in its class), and fit and finish.—Scott Blazey
