Sandhill Cranes at Whitewater Draw

February 22, 2025
Chapter:
Join us on Saturday, February 22nd, for a drive to a part of southeastern Arizona many have heard about but never visited: the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area in Cochise County. The Draw is the winter home of thousands of Sandhill Cranes who migrate from northern Canada, Alaska, and even Siberia. Talk about snowbirds! Besides the cranes, there are plenty of other waterfowl and wetland-associated birds. Bring your camera and binoculars! Tucson-area tourers will meet at the Shell Station located on the southwest corner of I-10 and Wilmot Rd (exit 269) between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. We will then caravan via I-10 and State Route 80 to Davis Road, about 3 miles south of Tombstone, which will be the meet-up point for everyone coming from outside of Tucson. We’ll leave from there no later than 10:45 to arrive at the Draw around 11:15 a.m. Around 12:30 or so, we’ll depart for lunch at the Bisbee Breakfast Club in the historic Lowell section of Bisbee. In addition to the BBC, the storefronts along Erie Street have been renovated to look like a 1950s era small town, complete with a gas station, radio studio, motorcycle dealership, and classic cars parked along the street. After lunch, you’ll be free to drive up AZ 80 to the Lavender Pit overlook, visit the shops along Main Street and Brewery Gulch in Old Bisbee, or return home.
