BMW 2002s, retrofitted with 6-cylinder, 325 engines and 5-speed transmissions are part of the Teutonic tuner architecture now, but it should come as no surprise to learn the factory thought of it first.
Way back in 1970, the BMW Werks team developed a weird concoction of part BMW 2002 and part E9 coupe and came up with the 3002. The car raced in one race, the 1970 Tour De Corse—-and it still exists, although it’s in pretty ratty shape somewhere in California, according to someone who has seen it there.
With a 270hp, 6 cylinder engine and weighing around 2100 lbs—–the car must have been challenging, the the most enjoyable way. Too bad BMW didn't pursue the idea, and wouldn't it be nice if somebody did a ground up on the sole survivor?—Paul Duchene
