The BMW 3 Series was the top compact luxury sport sedan last year, selling nearly 18,000 more units than the second place Mercedes-Benz C-Class –– 99,602 to 81,697. From a slower start this year the 3 Series is picking up speed, Motor Trend reports.

The 3 Series dominated the segment in May with 9307 units to the second place C-Class’s 8013 units, thought the compact Benz leads year-to-date sales by 58 units. The German automakers round out the podium with combined sales of the Audi A4 and A5 for May and year-to-date in third place with 4818 units and 22,276 units sold, respectively.

While the all-new Cadillac ATS came in dead last in 2012 due to a limited on-sale date, the baby Caddy was the fourth best-selling compact luxury sport car in May with 3249 units sold ahead of the G Sedan/Coupe, though the Infiniti’s inventory may be winding down as the Q50 takes its place. The Infiniti still leads the ATS in year-to-date sales by 3643 units.

Although the Volvo S60 (2739) outsold the Acura TL (2682) in May, the Japanese sedan still leads in year-to-date sales by 2201 units. With 1948 units sold in May, the Acura TSX outsold the Lexus IS (1897) and Buick Regal (1607), though more IS sedans (8867) have been sold than TSXs (7746) so far this year.––Paul Duchene
