The 5 Series Gran Turismo hasn't met its lofty sales targets in the U.S., so BMW is considering bringing back the 5 Series Touring—or sport wagon, as it's called over here.
Although nothing is firm, Autoblog reports the possibility of the wagon's return to the U.S. However, BMW has said all along that wagon sales—more accurately, a lack of them—were the reason they discontinued the model in the U.S.; and while sales of the 5 Series GT haven't been exactly robust, that crossover model has managed to outsell the previous 5 Series Touring since its arrival last year—despite a lukewarm reception and controversial appearance.
Autoblog also reports that the twin-turbocharged six-liter V12 currently fitted to the 760Li won't be canceled anytime soon. Instead, BMW is considering fitting the mill with its Active Hybrid system to boost fuel economy and performance. That's it: a 760Li with more toque!
Look for the electrically augmented twelve-cylinder within the next three years in both the 7 Series and future Rolls-Royce models.—Paul Duchene
