As they say, I've got some bad news and some good news.
The NHTSA reports that owners of 2012 and 2013 X5 and X6 crossovers may soon get a recall notice from the automaker due to possible steering issues. X5 diesels are also involved.
During manufacturing, affected vehicles may have received a steering gear that was machined improperly. The error could cause power steering fluid to leak onto hot engine parts and start a fire.
The recall starts in July. BMW will inspect and replace the steering gear if necessary, at no cost. For questions, contact BMW at (800) 525-7417.
BMW is expected to recall 2642 vehicles. —Paul Duchene
