Mini is introducing a new engine for the John Cooper Work’s lineup that promises to combine performance with greater efficiency. The new engine is a 1.6-L four-cylinder with twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection. Additionally, it has variable valve control for improved drivability with lower emissions. The new engine is mated to a six-speed manual though a 6-speed automatic is optional. The automatic also allows the driver to change gears manually with either the selector lever or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.
The engine produces 208 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque and the twin-scroll turbo develops more pressure than the Mini Cooper S. A limited-edition JCW GP model is also expected in 2013 and is rumored to produce even more power. All JCW models come with a performance-tuned chassis, and special features, including a Sport Button, which allows the driver to control the car’s accelerator responses and steering characteristics. Also fitted are electronic stability, traction control, an electronic differential lock and 17-inch light alloy wheels.
The 2013 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop will do 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 148 mph. The JCW Clubman does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and tops out at 148 mph, while the Convertible sprints to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds on its way to 146 mph. The Coupe is the fastest at 0-60 in 6.1 second at 149 mph and the Roadster reaches 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds and has a top speed of 147 mph.––Paul Duchene
