This is a gorgeous video, shot at Pendine Sands in Wales to promote the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in London. It's elegant, and the graphic point it makes is beautiful. But having grown up in Folkestone on the south coast of England, I remember what happened to my first bicycle, after I rode it in the sea at age eight. So I have to wonder: is driver Wolfgang Weber nuts? How are they going to do to clean the salt water and sand off this thing?. Or will it go to auction in another state, like all the "swimmer" cars after Hurricane Katrina?

By the way, Pendine Sands is where J.G. Parry-Thomas was killed in 1927, trying to regain his World Land Speed Record of 170 mph, which had just been broken by Sir Malcolm Campbell. His chain-driven monster racer "Babs" was powered by a V12 Liberty engine. A chain broke and virtually beheaded him and the car was buried in the dunes, where it remained for 40 years, until it was controversially exhumed and rebuilt. "Babs" is now on display at the Pendine Museum of Speed, and sometimes at Brooklands.––Paul Duchene
