Brendon Hartley and Scott Mayer won their first-ever Rolex Series race at Road America in the #8 Starworks Riley-BMW Daytona Prototype, while Bill Auberlen and Paul Dalla Lana won the GT class in the #94 Turner Motorsport M3.
Starworks’ #2 prototype, driven by Ryan Dalziel and Alex Popow, had won the Rolex Series race at Indianapolis. The car retired with engine failure at Road America. Another Riley-BMW, the Team Sahlen #42 prototype driven by Dane Cameron and Wayne Nonnamaker, had started from the pole. It appeared poised to win until it dropped out of with a broken axle two hours into the race. Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas finished fourth in the #01 Ganassi Riley-BMW. Rojas had spun early in the race, doing minor body damage to the car.
Bill Auberlen and Paul Dalla took their third GT class win of the year in the #94 Turner Motorsport M3. Auberlen fought a dramatic late race battle with Patrick Long in the Park Place Motorsports Porsche GT3. The second Turner M3, driven by Maxime Martin and Michael Marsal, finished third. The final laps were a challenge for Auberlen, who had to conserve fuel while holding off Long’s Porsche. He ran out of gas on the cool-down lap.
After Road America, Dalziel and Popow held onto their lead in DP drivers' points with three races remaining in the season. Dalla Lana is fifth in GT drivers’ points.—Brian S. Morgan
