The new 2016 BMW X540e plug-in-hybrid Sports Activity Vehicle was introduced to the international press recently in Munich, and BMW released some more photos in celebration. The X540e begins production at BMW Plant Spartanburg this month; dealers should begin receiving them this fall.
At 55 MPGe, the vehicle will be BMW’s most fuel-efficient X5 ever, and has the capability of pure electric driving with zero tailpipe emissions for up to 13 miles. The gasoline engine and electric motor hybrid powertrain will have a combined output of 308 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, which will take the almost three-ton X5 40e from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.
MSRP on the new X5 plug-in hybrid will be $63,095 including destination and handling fees. That price represents a $5,900 premium over the gasoline-powered X5 35i and a $4,400 bump over the diesel X5.—Scott Blazey
