The BMW 5 Series sedan, long one of BMW's best-selling model lines, and the epitome of a luxurious, performance-oriented four-door car, has always been at the foundation of BMW's commercial success. The current 5 Series—factory designation F10—is now at the end of its normal life cycle, and its replacement has been spied testing for over a year. There has been plenty of speculation on the launch of the next-generation G30 5 Series; all we know is that it must be coming soon.
BMW apparently wanted to let us know that is exactly when the new 5 Series will arrive, because it just posted a video about the car in a BMW press release titled “BMW 5 Series Coming Soon.”
Instead of giving us a full and detailed picture of the next 5, it appears that BMW may feed us the new car in small bites. The first morsel that is featured in the video is Remote View 3D, a BMW Connected feature. Using your smartphone, you can “always know what is happening around your vehicle.”
While the Remote View 3D is nifty, it’s hard to tell whether the lovely video of a BMW far away driving into the sunset is a new 5 Series, or something else. The next big international show is the 2016 Paris Motor Show that begins on the 1st of October. If BMW is going to show us the 2017 BMW 5 Series before 2017 actually begins, that could be the event.
If it wants to reveal the new 5 Series to us—bit by bit—by teasing us with snippet videos of new features, that’s okay, but there had better be a lot of them between now and October.—Scott Blazey
