BMW will celebrate the market launch of the newest BMW M5 with a very limited special edition. And surprise! The U.S. market will receive some. And by some, we mean 50.
The BMW M5 "First Edition" production run will be limited to 400 examples. They will be available in the spring of 2018. Another surprise may be the price, which will not be announced until we get much closer to market launch.
As usual with special editions, BMW has already chosen the color and it's exclusive to the M5 First Edition: Frozen Dark Red Metallic. The kidney grilles, the M gills, and the four tailpipes will come in BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim. Twenty-inch, seven double-spoke, light-alloy wheels finished in black are standard.
Inside, the M5 First Edition is trimmed in Piano Finish Black and includes a commemorative plaque on the center console with each car's special edition production number; for example, “M5 First Edition 1/400." The car comes with M multifunction seats. The interior is also available with full-leather upholstery in Smoke White with red contrast stitching.
Mechanically, the M5 First Edition will be the same as a regular F90 M5, but the First Edition will come with special paint and bragging rights. With only 50 in the pipeline to the U.S. market, fewer than 15 percent of all BMW centers will have them. Interested parties might want to start talking to their dealers now to see what their chances are.—Scott Blazey
