Those BMW scamps are playing with us again—just as they did a few months ago when they teased us with some of the design elements of the upcoming BMW 8 Series with the 8 Series Concept. Now BMW is tantalizing us with a roadster tease. We know that they intend to reveal a roadster concept car on August 17 at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, California. What we won't know until we see the production version, is how much this concept will resemble the next-generation BMW Z4 Roadster.
The source of this photo was BMW's Instagram account. The cryptic explanation read, "So much more than a silhouette. Find out what's happening at Pebble Beach on August 17th." In a later press release, BMW described the car as a "World Premiere BMW Concept vehicle" that "also previews a new model that will come to market in 2018." Sounds like a Z4 to us.
By the way, BMW will also be bringing that BMW 8 Series Concept to Pebble Beach as well.
The new Z4 has been spotted many times in the past few months on the street and track in heavy camouflage. We can deduce from those photos that it will have a soft top and will be available with a variety of four- and six-cylinder engines.
Unless BMW releases more tease photos, we must await—anxiously—the 17th of August. This just-released shot is compelling. With the highly anticipated BMW i8 Roadster, the hoped-for convertible version of the 8 Series Coupe, and now this concept possibly teasing the next Z4, BMW seems to be making a statement that it is not done with niche sports cars and convertibles.—Scott Blazey
