Since when is a BMW i3 “mysterious”?
Since BMW announced it was making 50 extremely exclusive limited-edition BMW i3 electric cars available to customers in the United States, that’s when.
The limited-edition, all-electric BMW i3 will be called the “Shadow Sport” and BMW will take off the shroud of mystery on Monday evening, November 16th, 2015 at 8:00 PM EST. The unveiling will be streamed live over social media via BMW USA Periscope.
BMWBLOG broke the news Sunday evening about this very unusual event, which, like the i3 in question, is also a bit mysterious. BMW usually pours on the pomp and circumstance when it reveals a new limited edition. This short-fuse announcement is very uncharacteristic.
The teaser photo included in the BMWBLOG report shows a car that might be Fluid Black, the recently announced BMW i3 new color.
The report generates more questions than answers. Is the Shadow Sport i3 a basic electric vehicle, or a Range Extender model, or could it be buyer’s choice? Is that the outline of a sunroof in the teaser photo? Is this limited edition being sent to the U.S. to test the waters for more i3’s with greater levels of performance features or accessories? Is BMW putting enough “sport” in the Shadow Sport to satisfy BMW fans who have a definite notion of what “sport” means?
The only way we will start learning the answers to these and other questions about the BMW i3 Shadow Sport is to tune in to BMW USA Periscope at 8 PM on Monday evening, or wait for the flurry of press reports afterward. We'll be tuning in.—Scott Blazey
