Now that the BMW M2 is established in the marketplace, it is getting rave reviews—as well as its share of awards. Car and Driver editors named the M2 and its M Performance sibling, the M240i, to their 2017 10Best Cars list. The M2's N55 engine was a finalist for the 2017 Wards 10 Best Engines list, and the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada chose the M2 as the Best New Premium Sports/Performance Car.
Motor Authority, which specializes in reporting on performance and luxury cars, also evaluates new cars and drives them to assess their claims of speed, power, and luxury and then makes its pronouncement on which is the best car to buy. Motor Authority editors looked at the Acura NSX, the Audi R8, and the Ford Focus RS, among many others, before arriving at their recommendation on what was the best car to buy.
You already knew where this was going, didn't you?
The Motor Authority Best Car To Buy 2017 is the BMW M2.
The M2 proved to Motor Authority that BMW still knows how to build cars that drivers will appreciate and in which they will have fun. It doesn't bother them that the M2 doesn't have carbon fiber mirror caps or a carbon fiber roof because what it does have is functional and supports the car's mission; the flared fenders for the big tires and brakes, for example, and the quad pipes.
When Motor Authority recommends the M2, it specifies getting it with the six-speed manual. It is a driver's car, after all.
On the value side, they like that the car starts at just over $52,000, and includes navigation, iDrive, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision warnings.
BMW makes other cars that are faster, bigger, more luxurious, and more expensive, but the M2 is built for performance and for fun and for the price, it can't be beat. Who are we to argue?—Scott Blazey
