BMW Blog brought to our attention this very-well-made BMW commercial. Well, it was a commercial with—and about—a BMW, but it wasn't made by BMW; fans in the Czech Republic put it together.
It is obvious that these filmmakers have a passion for BMWs—in this case, the E24 M635CSi—and also a passion for people who have a passion for BMWs.
The E24 6 Series had perhaps the longest production run of any BMW: 14 years from 1976 to 1989. The M635CSi was the third BMW to wear the M badge, after the E26 M1 and the E28 M535i. The M635CSi was sold in the United States as the M6, although it had fewer horses than the Euro M635CSi due to the catalytic converter.
Those of us who still engage in active motorsports despite our advancing years like to think that the last thing we see will be a checkered flag ending our final and triumphant track session before we’re hauled to the cemetery to be buried in our trusty and faithful race/autocross/HPDE car. We should be so lucky, but we all know it’s not going to happen that way.
No, the scenario painted in this fan-created BMW ad is at least as likely and probably much more so. Wouldn’t it be great if one day, when we’re past our high-speed prime, a loving relative or considerate friend takes the time to give us a few more minutes of Freude am Fahren in an Ultimate Driving Machine?
While we’re thinking of that, perhaps we should also be thinking if we know anyone of advanced years or with a medical condition that prevents them from engaging in the automotive behavior that once thrilled them and still thrills us. Maybe one more turn at the wheel or even giving them a ride through the countryside might be the best gift.
Anyway, thanks to the true believers who made this film and to BMWBLOG for finding it.—Scott Blazey
