BMW News

The seventh-generation BMW 5 Series, factory designation G30, will be available in 2017 with semi-autonomous driving features. A leaked 2016 Ordering Guide revealed by Bimmerpost shows the standard equipment and options available for the next-gen Fivers, or at least the most commonly available models; what was not included in this particular ordering guide were details for the BMW 550i, 550i xDrive, 535d, and 535d xDrive. Those last two are assuming that BMW brings over the 5 Series diesels in 2017. It already bailed on the 2017 BMW 7 Series diesel because of the Volkswagen diesel emission cheating scandal even though BMW’s diesels have all been cleared of any wrongdoing.

If the Ordering Guide is accurate, the new G30 BMW 5 Series will be available with most of the same semi-autonomous driver assistance features introduced last year on BMW’s G11/G12 flagship 7 Series Sedans.

The optional Driver Assistance package will have Parking Assistant, Head-up Display, Park Distance Control, and a Rear-view camera.

The Driver Assistance Plus Package will come with the Active Driving Assistant or Driver Assistance Plus II. Driver Assistance Package also has Parking Assistant Plus, Blind Spot Detection, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, and Surround View.

Driver Assistance Plus II includes, ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Lane Change.

It’s those last few options that will bring semi-autonomous driving to new 5 Series owners.

By the way, in more trickle-down technology from the BMW 7 Series, Gesture Control will be optional on the new 5 Series.

As good a car as the F10 BMW 5 Series has been, the G30 will represent leap-ahead technology. It will also be lighter, more powerful, and get better fuel economy with fewer emissions. The real test for us will be how it drives. The real test for BMW will be how it sells.—Scott Blazey
