BMW is recalling about 136,000 vehicles in the U.S. to replace the fuel-pump modules. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some in-tank fuel pumps may have wire contacts that were not crimped well enough; the worst-case scenario is that these loose wires might cause the connector to melt, causing a fuel leak, which is never good. Also, the fuel pump might stop working altogether, causing the engine to stop running, which is also not a good thing especially when moving on the highway.
According to BMW, no injuries have been reported as a result of the defect. The problem cropped up in BMWs in South Korea, Japan, and China in 2014 and now, the company is taking care of U.S. models.
BMW dealers are reported to start repairing affected vehicles on December5, 2016—free of charge, of course. Owners of the models can expect recall notices before then and also may contact their dealer or BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417.
