E30 M3 30th Anniversary, New Tuner Category And New Awards!
The buzz has started. Online and printed media outlets are already eager for the Monterey Car Week to start. Each August, tens of thousands of automotive enthusiasts descend on the Monterey Peninsula. Each year thousands come to the Nicklaus Club of Monterey for Legends of the Autobahn. (August 18) For more than 20 years the BMW CCA Festorics Turn Five Corral at Laguna Seca, has been the place to watch the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion. (August 20 and 21)
In the past week alone, we’ve seen countless social media posts with people coordinating excursions, planning road trips and finding the last rooms on the peninsula (hint: check out www.resort2me.com – not a partner, but it seems to work for many!), and getting their cars ready for the event—or traveling to the event.
What’s new this year? Club members have discovered that the Display is the place to park your BMW. Spectator parking, accessible by a circuitous route around the facility and back to an adjacent driving range, costs $20. For only $20 more you can utilize the main gate of the Nicklaus Club and park your Bimmer on a beautiful fairway and enjoy the day with friends and family. So, join us on the lawn as we enjoy thousands of spectators admiring Germany’s finest. Participating in our Display class is a great option to bring yourself—and your car—closer to the action. Become a part of the event, without making your car Concours-ready. This year, there will be a People’s Choice Award for Display cars, too!
Have you been to Legends before? What stood out for you? Earlier this week we read gratifying comments on our social media sites of memories of the mythical—and mystical—E31 M8. People recalled amazing BMW classics, including two 507s last year, legendary 328's, alongside of the fantasitic 328 Hommage, the only US sighting of the Zagato Roadster and rare 700 models and 1600 GTs. There are rumors that a few more classic cars may emerge from the Monterey mist this year, as well.
Those of you keeping up with your BMW history have of course noted that 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of the BMW E30 M3. So have we! If you have an E30 M3, bring it to Legends this summer! We have a spot for you in our E30 M3 corral. Your car can be judged and still be included in the E30 M3 corral, too! And if you have an E30 M3 and have not yet planned to bring it to Legends this year, let’s get you registered in either Concours or Display!
Also new this year—a Tuner Category within the judged classes! This category is open to all years and all models of BMWs. The judging criteria is unique and does not follow the usual “cleanliness and condition” points frequently used in single-marque Concours events. Instead, the criteria will focus on the theme and execution of those modifications with emphasis on an individual owner’s fabrication skills and build efforts. So, did you do an engine swap? M-Tech1 kit on your E30? New wheels and trim on your E36? Extra camber on those wheels and a color that will be seen two golf courses away? Bring it on!
Whether your commute to Monterey, Legends and Festorics is short or long, your registration will make you eligible for one of the many Shell gas cards provided by Legends of the Autobahn sponsor, Shell. Cards will be awarded for registration time lines, on-site gifts and rewards with trophies for judged classes in the Concours classes. Additional partners have signed on for Legends and Festorics. Michelin, is the presenting sponsor of both Legends of the Autobahn and Festorics. Once again, they will have a significant presence at both events and staff on hand to answer your questions. Bring a Trailer joins us for the first time, most likely with a car—on a trailer!—available for live bidding!!
When the judging and celebration is over, stay with us for a relaxing evening barbecue and entertainment, the David Holodiloff Band. We’ll rejuvenate ourselves and get ready for the next day at the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion at Laguna Seca and our famed Turn 5 Festorics Corral.
Register now and get set up for either the Display Corral or Concours class. Get those E30 M3s ready for their own corral and get ready to descend on the Monterey peninsula August 18-20.
