The X7, when it arrives next year, will be the biggest and heaviest production street vehicle that BMW has released so far. But don't make the mistake of thinking it will perform like a big, heavy truck. Recent spy footage of a test X7 taking on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife, shows that it's pretty fast and surprisingly agile.
The X7 will be built in BMW Plant Spartanburg on the same CLAR architecture as the newest BMW 7 Series Sedan. Rumors have speculated that we will see both a seven-passenger, three-row version and a four-seat super-luxury model.
The X7 will probably come with a choice of powerplants similar to those found in the 7 Series as well: likely a turbocharged six-cylinder, V8, and V12, along with a plug-in hybrid featuring a four-cylinder mill.
Rumors have started to circulate that BMW will have an X7 presence at next month's Frankfurt International Auto Show. That presence might take the form of a production version of the X7, or a concept car teaser version of the X7, much like BMW did with the Concept 8 Series previewing the next BMW 8 Series Coupe.
We know the X7 is coming. We pretty much know what it will look like under all the camouflage. It's time to pull off the covers and Frankfurt seems like the perfect place to do it.—Scott Blazey
