BMW 328 Hommage to grace West Coast Summer Concours
Design concept will share the grass with real BMW 328s
BMW fans at Monterey’s West Coast Summer Concours have been treated to a great array of vintage BMWs in the past, but this year will be even better. BMW is bringing their latest design concept, the 328 Hommage, to display at Pebble Beach on Sunday—but first it will appear in the BMW section of the three-marque concours laid out on the greens of Rancho Cañada on Friday, August 19.
But spectacular as that car may be, it will be in some pretty impressive company. BMW of North America plans to display it alongside at least one prewar 328—the legendary roadster that won just about any race with a two-liter class in the late 1930s. Combine these legends with the cars of noted California BMW collectors Jim Smith and Tom Graham, and the 2011 West Coast Summer Concours will again offer an array of BMW history that otherwise couldn’t be seen west of Munich. Smith, who had seven cars ranging from a 1929 Dixi to a 1937 BMW 327 pillarless coupe on display last year, has promised even more cars in 2011—including an interesting, but decidedly homely, sedan manufactured in Eisenach after the East Germans took over the plant and started cranking out their own variations on a BMW theme.
More modern BMWs entered in concours competition by BMW CCA members will be judged in several categories, while members of the Porsche and Mercedes-Benz clubs will hold parallel concours competitions—all part of the German-marque celebration dubbed “The Legends Of The Autobahn.” The concours is open to all members of the BMW CCA—including those who just want to put their cars on display, not detail them with Q-Tips and toothbrushes!
