M4 DTM racer Marco Wittmann finished fifth in race one and sixth in race two in the penultimate DTM event of the season at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria.
Going into the event Audi, BMW, and Mercedes agreed to end the performance weight system that was designed to level the playing field from one event to the next. Audi appeared to gain an edge after the system was dropped, leading in qualifying and winning both races.
Wittmann finished fifth in race one, while BMW’s Maxime Martin and Timo Glock finished sixth and tenth, respectively. Audi’s Mattias Ekstrom won the race.
On Sunday, when Wittmann and Glock finished sixth and seventh, the win went to Audi racer Rene Rast.
Going into the Hockenheim finale Wittman, the defending DTM champion, is fifth in drivers’ points. Ekstrom and Rast are first and second. Audi leads manufacturers’ points with Mercedes second and BMW third. The Hockenheim event will be run on October 13-15.—Brian S. Morgan
