BMW has ended production of its X6 Active Hybrid, Dave Buchko of BMW North America tells Bimmerfile. There are no plans to upgrade the system or offer the current X6 in another hybrid form, which probably won't be mourned by many people, including the few buyers. As future collectors, they can expect to win the "Rare, And Should Be" category at shows.
The X6 Active Hybrid turned out to be one of the most expensive vehicles in the BMW lineup, starting at just under $90k and producing miserable gas mileage, at 18 mpg combined.
In late 2009, BMW introduced an X6 featuring a version of the Global Hybrid Cooperation hybrid power train, popularly known as the two-mode hybrid system. Shortly after, this car was confirmed as being called the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and at that time it was the most powerful hybrid vehicle.
The X6 hybrid used a 400-hp, 4.4-liter, twin turbo V8 coupled with two electric motors that produced 480 total hp and 575 lb-ft torque. Because it was a two-mode hybrid, it could run exclusively on electricity from its battery pack for about two miles, with a top speed of 37mph. Top speed is (sorry, was) electronically limited to 130 mph.—Paul Duchene
