The BMW X2 Sports Activity Coupe has finally been spotted without most of the BMW test camouflage or the urban camouflage that adorned the X2 when it appeared during fashion week in Milan. This sighting caught the newest member of the X family in all of its painted glory not on the track or the street, but on a flatbed.
BMW previewed the X2 as a concept vehicle earlier this year, and if the X2 seen being transported is representative of production vehicles, there are some subtle and not-so-subtle differences from the concept.
The production car will lose the exaggerated front air scoops on the concept in favor of smaller scoops and foglights. The taillights are much more traditional on the production vehicle, which also has more standard-looking exhaust tips rather than the huge jet-exhaust-looking pipes on the concept. A cosmetic rear skid plate on the production vehicle replaces the more extreme rear valence on the concept.
Looking at the side view, both the concept and the vehicle on the flatbed retain the BMW logo behind the C pillar, and the Hofmeister kinks on both look similar, although the Hofmeister kink seems to be getting kinkier with each new model BMW.
Expect the X2 to have similar drivelines as the BMW X1, and be available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel xDrive variants.
Given the smaller stature of the X1 and X2, BMW designers have maintained a higher roofline on the X2 than the more coupe-like silhouette on the larger X4 and X5 Sports Activity Coupes. Perhaps it's because lowering the roofline would take away much of the already limited cargo space in the X2 compared to the X1.
BMW has not announced a launch date, but a good opportunity might be the Los Angeles Auto Show in early December.—Scott Blazey
