BMW has released this video showing how to keep a 2018 M5 from running out of gas during an eight-hour attempt at a Guinness World Record drifting title. It was a true team effort with BMW Performance Center instructor Johan Schwartz at the wheel of the all-new 2018 BMW M5 record-attempting car, Performance Center Chief Instructor Matt Mullins driving the refueling vehicle, a previous-generation F10 BMW M5, with Matt Butts of Detroit Speed doing the dangerous work of hanging out of the right rear passenger window to hook up the custom dry-break refueling nozzle. Detroit Speed is the North Carolina-based automotive fabricator that worked with BMW to build the refueling system.
Five refueling sessions were required to keep the record-setting M5 going during the official eight-hour drifting period.
The new record was set at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina. What this video does not show is that after Schwartz earned the Guinness World Record title for longest drift in eight hours, he and Mullins went out in their two M5s and proceeded to set a Guinness World Record title for the longest twin drift—49.25 miles in one hour.
