In a notice that should probably be accompanied by flashing red lights, and a wailing siren,BMW is recalling 1,414 S 1000 RR sport motorcycles from the 2012 model year, because their high-performance engines could suddenly fail, with catastrophic consequences
In a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, BMW said the bikes’ connecting-rod bolts, which attach the connecting rods to the engine's crankshaft, can loosen under high engine temperatures or at high engine speeds. Such loosening can result in the engine disintegrating, as it throws connecting rods through the case.
If this happens, the engine’s sudden failure and spilled oil that may accompany it could cause a loss of control (and that is an understatement, akin to racers being said by announcers to have "stepped off" at 100 mph). If the engine seizes in the course of a failure, the rider will be launched from the motorcycle, at whatever velocity he or she is traveling.
BMW said the recall includes 1,414 bikes built from Sept. 1, 2011, through April 10, 2012. Under the recall BMW dealers will replace the connecting rod bolts free of charge. The recall is expected to begin next month. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 800-525-7417.
Wise owners of 2012 S 1000 RRs will check their manufacture date immediately after reading this, and not start the bike until the necessary repairs have been made at the dealership. I'd ask the dealer to come and collect my bike. ––Paul Duchene
