BMW is Bavaria's own automaker, so naturally the German state uses the company's vehicles as its police cars. BMW and the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior have signed a new four-year deal to supply state police vehicles, starting with ten new vehicles delivered to the department at BMW Welt in Munich. The new fleet will consist of 3 Series and 5 Series models (touring wagons, by the looks of things), and, for the first time, the X3 crossover as well.

The SUVs will be used in forested areas and snowy parts of the state, and will be equipped with special law-enforcement equipment and livery. In a new twist to the import-export world, while the 3 and 5 Series models are made right there in Bavaria, the X3 is made in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and brought back to Germany to be outfitted for patrol. Coals to Newcastle, indeed.––Paul Duchene
