Inching closer to reality, the i3 coupe gets the video treatment from BMW (at least it's not in pajamas). Displayed for the first time at the LA Auto Show, the i3 Coupe is a conceptual spin-off from BMW's five-door i3 that will go on sale worldwide at the end of this year (it's 2013, remember?).
In the new video, the all-electric coupe is seen on the road with the narrator giving primary details on the car, including driving range and performance stats. BMW has said the three-door i3 Coupe is one of many body styles it is considering for the i3 Series' range.
Like the five-door, the i3 Coupe sports a lightweight carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body construction and is powered by a 125 kw electric motor 125kW, equivalent to 168hp, with a peak torque of 184 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels.
It's fetchingly shot on the California coast, a moderate climate, where doubtless many will be sold. Splashing through Hurricane Sandy's floods, or being started one morning with a foot of snow on it, in sub-zero Montana might be more problematic.––Paul Duchene
