Don’t you love traveling by commercial airlines? Yeah, me neither. It’s not that I don’t like flying; in fact, I’m a pilot. I love flying—when I’m at the controls. But riding in a big aluminum tube, breathing other’s people’s exhaust fumes, is not my idea of fun.

In last week’s column, I’d had Louie, the decade-dormant 1972 2002tii that I bought sight-unseen for short money, towed from the seller’s house in New Albany, Indiana, to Jake Metz’s 60-by-40-foot pole barn in Louisville. Jake and I communicated via Facetime while he conducted a real-time video inspection of the car.

Driving through the Appalachians in the winter is risky business. As we snaked through the hills on Interstate 80, we knew by the darkening clouds up ahead that trouble was brewing. Oddly, the sun was still shining when the first snowflakes danced across the pavement.
