Since Thanksgiving was last week, I feel obliged to write of things for which I am most thankful. Heading the list would be my wife, family, friends, work, and quality of life. Being a car guy, I am also thankful for cars, but those are farther down the list.

About two years ago, when I was underemployed at my geophysics job, but hadn’t yet taken the position at Bentley Publishers, I had a lot of time on my hands. I’d search endlessly on Craigslist and go and look at virtually any inexpensive, promising-sounding vintage BMW within two hundred miles.

Peter Brock turned 80 last week—yes, that Peter Brock—and many of his friends turned up in Van Nuys to surprise him. Eighty looks better on Brock than it will on me; I suspect that, like Dorian Gray, he has a portrait rotting in an attic somewhere.

Last week, when I talked about troubleshooting a car that seemed to be running on only one or two cylinders, I said, “On most carbureted cars, since all cylinders share the same carb and intake manifold, misfiring on a subset of cylinders is usually an ignition-related problem. However, on a fuel-injected car like a tii, since there are individual fuel-injection lines, the cause can be fuel-delivery-related.
