As we ended last week’s column, I was on the way to the Vintage when I stopped to help Brian Ach and his wife, Michelle, in Winchester, Virginia. When he built the largest private home in America, George W. Vanderbilt laid the groundwork for what became the U.S. Forest Service as well, with architect Frederick Law Olmsted creating a park of 125,000 acres of timberland, with 25 acres reserved for the gardens of Biltmore House. While Vanderbilt referred to it is “my little mountain escape,” by the time the house was finished in 1895, its living area exceed 135,000 square feet.

The week before last, I walked up to the water’s edge with my 2001 E46 325xiT wagon. The work had begun innocently enough six weeks ago, when I noticed that the front axle boots were ripped, but a snapped pinch bolt and a decision to replace struts and tower mounts caused it to slide part way down the slippery slope.
